3 Dead, 12 Injured, Toronto Greektown shooting

Sounds like a targeted hit with a crapload of collatoral damage... :-(

Gunman and 2 victims dead, 12 others injured in Toronto Greektown shooting

A gunman and two victims are dead and 12 others are in hospital after a shooting in Toronto's Greektown neighbourhood on Sunday evening, police say.

One person killed is a woman. One of the injured, a young girl aged eight or nine, is in critical condition, according to authorities.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which probes police-involved shootings, said the suspected gunman, 29, is also dead. Police, meanwhile, are working to determine what may have led to the violence.

* * *

A video from one witness shows a man dressed in black clothes and a black hat walking quickly and firing three shots from the sidewalk into at least one shop or restaurant.

* * *

Kerri Lahey said she was eating dinner at 7Numbers restaurant with her boyfriend when she saw the gunman enter through a side door and shoot a woman.

"We were sitting out on the patio, and we heard shots, so we ran inside and he came in the restaurant and shot the girl right in front of me,"

* * *

He described the suspect as a white male, in his late to early 30s, who was dressed in all black.

Timothy Leary and the 2017 15" MacBook Pro

I discovered some very peculiar behaviour with the 2017 MacBook Pro (15", touch bar model). When I booted into safe boot mode, I would get lots of non-Apple-like horizontal banding and flickering during the boot process and login screen. Then, if I went back to the login screen, the colours would be inverted. Upon logging in again, the screen would display in a bizarre sort of LSD trippy way. It defies description – see the attached pic. The actual desktop is a picture with orange-brown grass and lots of blue sky.

Okay, the two Apple reps that saw it told me it was a motherboard issue and so I got the MB replaced (they also replaced the "top case," which basically means I have a brand new computer aside from the display :-/ ).

I've got the new computer back, and out of curiosity, went through the steps to reproduce the problem. Turns out, replacing the motherboard didn't fix the issue, I am seeing the exact same visual glitches.

Does anyone out there have one of these machines? Can you reproduce this? I'm wondering if it's a built in design flaw or maybe I'm just really unlucky with AppleCare repairs (long story, but I have the current machine as a replacement for one of the ill-fated 2011 MacBooks with the graphics chip failure – four failed motherboards on that one and I was able to convince them that they owed me a new computer).

Again, the sequence is
• safe boot (start up with the shift key held down)
• log in to an account (are you seeing the flickering/banding?)
• go back to the login screen (are the colours inverted?)
• log in again (is the display tripping balls?)

I'd appreciate hearing from you either way (problems or no).

Thanks!

Can't copy a large number of jpgs from SD card

I keep running into more and more quirks on ElCapitan which I never had on SnowLeopard.

Latest one is that one cannot copy a large number of jpgs at one time from an SD card.

My camera uses an SD card to record images.
The card I use is a 2 GB Kingston SD card.
It had about 1200 jpg images on it using up roughly 1.5 GB on the SD card.

When I plug the SD card into the MacMini running ElCapitan, everything shows up fine, I can look at all the pictures, but when I then select all 1200 images to copy them to a new folder on the Mac Mini, the window shows up ready to copy but no copying takes place.
I have waited five minutes and then gave up.

When I then select 300 or 400 images at a time, the copying process proceeds normally.
So in the end I can accomplish what I set out to do, I just have to do it in three or four steps, 300 images at a time.

Anyone know what is going on?
Is there a maximum number of images I can copy at a time?

Font corrupted or substituted in Illustrator CS6?

I’m working on a brochure with a regional map ( dozens of lakes, rivers, names, roads, canoe routes, etc) in Mac OS X 10.10.5, Adobe InDesign & Illustrator CS6. (I’m semi retired and not using Creative Cloud!) The map was prepared by a government department and sent to me as an Illustrator CS6 file. The file was also sent as a PDF which I cannot change. I do have to make some type changes, but the map designer has gone on holidays. She did supply me the fonts.

My problem is, when I open her file, that some of the font styles - Times Roman Regular and Italic and Swiss 721 Condensed - are the wrong size and stretched beyond legibility. The Helvetica Regular, Bold, Narrow fonts are fine. My font palette shows the font size as 0.9 points when it should be about 6 points. There are dozens and dozens of words on multiple layers. So, somehow some fonts are being substituted.

Of the fonts the map designer sent me, one font would not download, and I do not recognize it - Ebrima.ttf. Tried to buy it, but can’t find it from any font supplier.

I am on a severe deadline to get this printed. Any idea how I can fix this?

IP Phone problem or Switch problem

OK not strictly iOS but worth a try :D ...

I have a virtual PABX and connecting my phones to the router via a switch (some PoE ports, some normal ones).

One day this setup stopped working. I tested the switch and everything looks normal (blinking lights etc.). When I plug the phone directly into the router everything works normally. When I connect via the switch, the phone gets stuck in 'obtaining IP address' mode for ever.

Easy way out is to ditch the Switch but those PoEs are not cheap so I'd like to try another thing or two. Ideas?

Thanks

To Be or not To Be Green

I have said it on numerous occasions. So-called green initiatives usually fail to consider the entire equation. Case in point replacing those Incandescent light bulbs. Sounds good, it uses less electricity. Well not enough to actually see a difference on your bill but it does use less.

So what's wrong with that. Well the replacement LED and CFBs contain Mercury and Phosphors not the things we want going into our landfills. And this is Canada, so 9 months of the year that wasted heat from incandescents is not wasted, it helps to heat our homes. The other 3 months, light bulbs are not really needed thanks to very long northern summer days.

Then there is the fractured color spectrum and having the lights cycle on and off 60 times per second and of course radio interference.

Looking at the entire equation those environmentally green bulbs are anything but.

fantastic new products to protect you from malware - free

so recently i have been investigating and testing ways to block ads on the go as well as protection against malware : phishing etc.

one of the key ways i wanted to do it was by DNS - so no apps or plugins needed..
when i am at home i have a firewall to protect my devices.. but on the road i use ad guard plug in, but it does occasionally block pages from working..

So I looked up DNS methods - so basically you add a custom DNS to your network setting on your computer or iOS device and boom you are done and protected..

here are a few DNS options - best of all - free!

https://alternate-dns.com
https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html
as well as
https://www.security.neustar/digital...rsive-dns#free
which offers a lot more options, which you decide how much protection you want.

networking a mac mini (late 2012) to a 2008 Mac pro with an ethernet cable

G'day,

My Mac Pro has 2 ethernet jacks, so I wondered if I could connect my Mac Mini by ethernet cable and get on the internet.

So, ethernet cable from modem to Mac Pro and then cable to Mac mini.

Can I adjust network settings so that I could use the Mac Mini to get on the internet?

Cheers.

New Scam...Don't Be Fooled!

There is a new scam on the Web that very effectively scares users and attempts to extort them. But this scam has no teeth.

Typically a user will have been on a porn site and subsequently they receive an email showing your password (and the fact that the password is correct is what really scares folks) and saying that while you were on the porn site all of your contacts were downloaded. The scammer threatens to send a split screen video of your face from your webcam along with the video you were watching to many of your contacts. Generally they want you to send a ransom to a particular address to keep them from doing that.

By all accounts the ransomer doesn't have the goods to follow through on their threat. The scammer has your password from a previous large break-in to company or Web site. (There have been a shocking number of these reported in the press over the last number of years.)

So, if you are confronted by this scam, all that you need do is make sure that all of your passwords are updated, and you should be fine to then ignore this scam. There is no malware on your computer and nothing is going to be sent to your friends/contacts.

Your connection is not secure

In the last few days I'm starting to get this error message - complete message is attached.

Initially it happened when I wanted to use paypal to pay for an order from a store in the US, so I contacted them assuming it's an issue on thier side. but just now, I bought something on ebay.com and get the same message when trying to pay.

The strange thing is that I bought three items from ebay earlier today and used paypal - no problem
For the last purchased all I did change the shipping address in paypal to one that was already registered and now I have the problem.

This issue happened with Firefox - since Firefox Quantum is a bit screwed uo I tried using Waterfox, same problem.
Then tried Chrome - still the same problem.

When googling, the Mozilla support team seems to blame the various anti-virus programs; I don't have any on my Mac.
Then they give a link to bypass the message but the link just repeats the blame of the anti-virus programs.

Anyone have that issue and knows what is going on?

Out Of Bandwidth With Telus!

I have been having issues with my Telus DSL connection for over a year now with it constantly dropping the connection. I have had four repair service visits in the past year and each time the tech declared the modem had failed and replaced it. After each visit it would work for a period of time, but eventually returned to the same old problem.

The latest replacement was a week ago and the connection dropping returned within a day.

Telus called me yesterday to ask how things were going now after I had complained to my rep. I explained that the two lights on the modem, one for internet and one for wifi were both on, but no connection via wifi. Speed test told me they could not locate the ISP. If I then did a hard reset with the boot button on the modem, the connection would resume, but the speed would be different every time. I have the high speed modem shown below, an Actiontec T3200M.

I have what Telus comicly refers to as high speed DSL that gives me 15 down and 1 up max and have been paying $85/month for unlimited data.

The guy who called was obviously Asian and put me on hold for well over 15 minutes while he investigated my complaint. When he returned, he told me he had figured out what the problem was; I had exceeded the connection's bandwidth as we had too many wifi devices. At that very time he told me there were 13 devices connected, too many for the connection to handle.

Bottom line, I needed a faster connection, but Telus cannot provide anything faster in my area due to the old tech in place. He suggested I upgrade to fibre optic when it bacame available and I told him I had applied for that annually for the past two years with no success as they had no lines in the ground.

I don't think our family is a normal user in that our adult daughter has a suite in the basement and is a teacher. She has two laptops, one for school and one personal, ditto for two iPads, one iPhone and one wireless printer. That's six wifi devices.

I myself have an iPhone, laptop, Mac Mini, iPad and two wireless printers. Also a smart TV. Toss in the wife's iPhone and iPad and we total 9 more devices although the Mini is connected via ethernet, yet it neither had a connection.

So what to do? Telus has been my ISP for two decades now and all my email is through them so I am reluctant to change three email addresses tied to my web site. Add to that the difficulty I had with Shaw cable when I used them previous to Telus. Their service sucked.

So, Telus stated they were immediately reducing my monthly fee by $35 effective immediately as compensation.

Anyone else ever literally run out of bandwidth with an ISP in this day and age?

I've been wondering what was going on. I simply kept resubscribing, figuring it was all my fault. This must also be what happened to other newsletter subscriptions that I never received.
I've have sent emails that were never delivered, even though they were shown as being sent, but this is the first indisputable fact that Apple was censoring my incoming mail. I'm now wondering what other incoming messages never made it through to me. Hopefully nothing important.

Dear CBC newsletter subscriber,

CBC newsletters recently stopped being delivered to email addresses with Apple domains such as iCloud, Me and Mac (.com). This was due to a spam utility used by Apple having incorrectly flagged CBC emails as junk mail. That flag has now been removed and you will begin receiving your CBC newsletters again this week on their regular schedules.

Airport Express oddity

My internet modem crapped out, and Shaw has provided a new one, which I set up without a problem. However, my Airport Express shows a flashing amber light, despite the fact that I can get on the internet no problem. I heard somewhere that the flashing amber might indicate a software update is required, but I went to the App Store and found no updates to install. Anybody know whether it's a problem waiting to happen?
