Here is the background.
I currently have an iPhone 6 in 8/10 condition (minor scratches but it has been in an Otterbox Defender case since day 1) and a battery upgrade from Apple last year when Apple was running the battery trade-in program.
A family member recently upgraded their iPhone 6S to an iPhone XS and gave me the old iPhone 6S. The iPhone 6S has some problems. The lightening port doesn't always accept a charge, the internal speaker/microphone doesn't work so you have to use a headset or bluetooth and the battery life is short. Apple has said on repeated occasions to this family member that there is also water damage to this iPhone and they won't do any repairs to it.
My work allows for bring-your-own-device to work where they reimburse me the cost of my cell phone plan as long as the cost of your plan is in the same ballpark as the work plan. I am currently with Koodo on the $60/10GB of data bring-your-own-device 2017 Christmas promo plan so I am good there since the work plan is only 3GB of data. Obviously Koodo will not offer to give me any phone subsidies to upgrade my existing iPhone 6 unless I switch plans. Now, since I recently got a promotion, my work is offering to also contribute approx. $450.00 towards buying a new phone of my choosing.
I recently went to a few different 3rd party repair shops in Toronto to get quotes to repair the iPhone 6S. The quotes to repair were anywhere between $100.00 to $300.00 depending on the storefront. When I was at one of the repair stores, the repair guy suggested that instead of trying to fix the iPhone 6S, I may be better off going to Apple and trading in the phone. He suggested I would get a $150.00 credit towards that from Apple on a new phone purchase.
Can anyone give me any details on the trade-in program? I went on the Apple website and see they have an online trade-in and only give you a credit for a good working phone. How does this work in store? Is it an instant credit there? Also, if I wanted to, would they let me trade in both my existing iPhone 6 and the broken iPhone 6S for $300.00 in credit?
Also note that I have a $100.00 gift card to one of the malls where Apple has a storefront so I would also be able to apply that as well.
My thinking here is if I went and got the iPhone XR which is retailing for $1,029.00 minus the work $450.00 credit minus the $100.00 existing mall gift card minus the $150.00 trade in credit for iPhone 6S, my out of pocket cost is $329.00. And if they let me stack on the iPhone 6 as well and credit is also $150.00 (?) then I would only pay $29.00.
As part of this thought process, I also have to consider that if I cheap out and just decide to fix the iPhone 6S that Apple may drop support for it in iOS 13.
Can someone let me know their thoughts on the above and any experience in store with the trade-in program? At that point it may even be worth spending some additional out of pocket money to upgrade to the iPhone XS as well...???
