2015 MBP replace SSD possible?

I use a dandy, little third-party app called SSDReporter. My SSD rating has been steadily dropping. I'm now at 80% of new with a wear levelling count of 180.

As I live in a place with plenty of expert options, I'm thinking of getting my 1TB SATA (?) replaced with 2TB. Is this even possible?

If so, I'd appreciate knowing what kind of SSD my Mac has inside so I can buy a replacement. TIA!

Hi everyone,
Who would have thought a 3400$ iMac, purchased in March 2019, would be barely useable after 3 years.
Specs are 21.5" iMac with3.2 Ghz Intel 17, 4 GB Vega 20 card, 16 GBs ram.
Just prior to updating to Ventura the screen started ghosting: desktop icons would show through Safari and text would be highly pixelated.
Hoping this was a possible software issue I upgraded to Ventura but to no avail.

What if any privacy benefits social media via browser vs apps.

Curious if I do all my social media engagements via a browser as oppose to having the app (with various settings turned off or on) if it's more private. With facebook via browser for example I know I am only giving access to my device's stored files on a per need basis and not all the time. Too via browser I do not need to give access to my iPhone's contact list. I do know iPhone has a number of settings that can be turned off for privacy, do not know if this makes the social media apps...

Frozen Facebook page

I have this problem on my MacAir only - Facebook on my iPad and iPhone work normally. I cannot get past the error page (see screen shot). I tried to report it to Facebook, but heard nothing back. Since it's only on the laptop, maybe it is more an Apple problem than Facebook? I don't recall what I was doing exactly when it froze up, but I may have been trying to manage a page in MetaBusiness.

disable iCloud icon

The icloud icon appears attached to nearly all the app icons on our ipad mini from a few years ago (not here at the moment and I don't remember the ios).

How can we get rid of them?

I have checked similar topics and the closest I can get to a solution is to disable iCloud as the the default storage for some apps but I can't see where to do that.

As my wife and I get older we are having a hard time with the small, wireless keyboard that came with our 2019 27" iMac. Is there a larger (bigger keys, letters and numbers) keyboard available with all the functions that our keyboard now has? I have searched and found the Apple ones that have the number keys on the right hand side but by looking at pictures online I can't tell is they are actually larger and easier to see.

iPad Pro (5th gen) vs iPhone 14 Pro Max

In comparing snappiness of the UI between my 2021 5th gen iPad Pro 12.9 inch to my new iPhone 14 Pro Max, the iPhone definitely shows results much quicker in search than the iPad. I always did find the search speed kind of “annoying” with the iPad as I’d expect immediate results as I’m getting with the iPhone. Not really an issue per se, but I’m wondering what others are finding.

1Password (older version) new iPhone setup

Reset my old iPhone XS to factory and started installing all my apps onto my new iPhone. Everything is working great except I can't figure how to download the 1Password iOS app that doesn't require an account login and monthly fee, and I don't want any of my sensitive data on a cloud type of service. Mouse is strange

I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this question but I will go ahead and ask.

On one of the updates, I don't remember which one, part of it was mouse control. What I mean by that is while reading a page when I want to move the page up, the pages go back a page.

It is very irritating constant ly having to click on the story again or click on the page forward arrow.

And for some reason the mouse is very touchy and will do thesame thing as soon as the mouse is touched.

I have two printers - a Lexmark monochrome laser printer. I have purchased compatible/remanufactured toner cartridges in the past which often have black toner spatter on the page. Not good when you give a report to a design client. Use it mostly for internal copies.

HFS+ to APFS

I am using an old early-2011 MBP with OS 10.12.6 on it. If I don't get a newer machine my only option of further updates is to go to OS 10.13, the last version of macOS that the early-2011 MBP can run. The drive in there is a SSD. I understand that macOS 13 will convert HFS+ to APFS if the drive is a SSD.

If the OS update is the route that I take, how do I go about to do that? Is it safer to do a clean install of OS 10.13 then the applications and finally move all the files over?

G5 clean up moves forward (new question)

Hi,

I successfully erased my documents drive in the G5 just by using the Disk Utility (did the 7x erase). Now I want to do the main OS drive. I have an installer disk with OS 10.4 (Tiger). I gather I can use this to do it but it's all so old, I can't find helpful 'how to' videos on the internet. Do I just insert the disc or do I need to hold down any special keys to do the erase and clean install?

cannot login to Apple with Safari

It's been quite some time now that I cannot login to Apple with Safari. Works fine with Chrome. I've created a new password on several occasions now with no success. I deleted the Safari.plist file with no success. When entering the password the entry box wiggles as if I've entered the wrong password. Sad that I have to use a non-Apple app to sign in. Calendar items are gone after screwing with iCloud settings

In the midst of adding a work iPhone to my Apple account and screwing with iCloud settings, I've lost calendar items. I cannot remember exactly when this happened and I hadn't backed up iCloud Calendars so I can't just Restore an older version. I've also found my Notes are only in iCloud and no longer on my phone which I want to move them to.

What are some ways that I would've deleted Calendar items?
How can I move iCloud Notes onto my iPhone? I've Googled this and nothing has worked.

Disable safari content blocker for gmx.net?

My email provider is gmx.net.
Apparently gmx seems to be considered bad and safari’s content blockers do not permit me to load that site.
Is there anywhere I can configure said content blocker to whitelist gmx.net?

I have not tried this on my Mac because there I use the mail app to check mail. It is only when I am travelling that I do not have my iMac with me and have to use the web interface from safari on iOS.

MS Office 2011 no more?

I installed this on my 2016 MBP in 2014 but now I'm using macOS Monterrey 12.0.1 and it seems I can't use it and must now go to the App Store and subscribe to MS Office monthly or annually.

RIP MacNutt

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but our favourite bull headed scotsman, Gerry MacNutt, died in a freak accident this past weekend. I'dve posted something sooner, but I literally just found out when my mother phoned me from Salt Spring asking if I knew a guy named MacNutt.

Apparently he was photographing a motorcycle drag race (as he often talked about doing) and one of the bikes flew out of control and struck him.

Here is the story on the local Salt Spring...

ehMac forums "Smiles" or emojis slow to load.

Is it just me???

Whenever I attempt, or at least during my first sessions at the site, attempts to load the pop-up "smiles" or emojis, it takes a good 30 seconds before a pop-up box shows asking if I want to quit or carry on waiting. I usually say to wait and within another 10 seconds, the pop-up Smiles sheet finally shows.

I experience no such delay at other forums using the same software, and it never used to take so long so I don't know what happened at the server end here but it sure...

SCSI to SATA adapter?????????

I think i have finally found one drive that i can work on my Lacie tower raid, i know the drive is failing as i was talking to the seller yesterday saying that the drive is pooched as he tried to wipe the drive, but he can't.

QUESTION is..........
is there an adapter from a SCSI to sata. as i would love to put in a SSD disk in that case.
i haven't got the chance to take one of those apart yet, so not entirely sure how many pins those drives have.

My old iMac has two user accounts (wife and me) with a combined total of almost 2.5 TB used.

Monterey questions

I have a lot of fully-functioning applications. They're from various non-purchased sources but have never given me a problem.

However, I'm concerned if I move to Monterey, the new 'security' or Gatekeeper functions will block these. At least in High Sierra, it gives me a choice to open apps from unidentified developers in System Prefs.

I certainly can afford to go out & buy all this software. Will I run into problems with my old installed software? TOA!

Slow to appear

Everytime I create a document, PDF or image, it's very slow to appear on my Desktop. Restart doesn't help.

It would be time-consuming/a lot of fiddling to 'upgrade' to Mojave from High Sierra, although I could keep my 32-bit third parties that way.

A lot of users have gone to Monterey; gotta say I hate it. It's not very customizable, e.g. Desktop Picture, folder icons aso.

I often have minimal SSD space, currently 127GB of 1TB. Is that not enough free space?

2013 27" iMac as external monitor for M1 Mac Mini - possible?

I know this is a long shot because I could not find anything in a web search, but I shall ask it here anyway - exhaust all avenues so to speak.

So, since the iMac is dying (and Apple says they will not look at any machine before 2015 and they suggested I buy a new Mac), I was wondering if I could use this as a display for a new Mac mini M1 I am looking at buying.

Advantages:
1. I get a proper and excellent IPS display at a high enough resolution

2013 27" iMac with Fusion drive failing - SuperDuper has been backing up slowly

iMac is terribly slow to do anything - beachballs all the time, apps take long to launch, booting up takes at least 5 minutes if not longer, then to show the after-login sdesktop it takes another ten minutes etc.

Etrecheck said hard drive shows signs of failure. Disk Utility said said all was well.

So, I decided to do a super duper backup.

Now, SuperDuper has been baking up for 26t hours straight (and counting) - it has completed about 40% of the backup.

My computer is slow...any suggestions?

Hi all...my Mac Pro has become atrociously slow..to the point it is painful to use. I love my mac...is there anything that can be done to restore it to its former glory? In the past when I had this problem members suggested ONYX and that really did fix me up....but now the slowness is back and ONYX doesn't seem to do the trick anymore.

I have run ONYX but to no avail, nothing I could execute would really help. Would a malware software help? Any ideas?

Two HDs

Wife’s 2019 MBA came back from major AppleCare repair. Mojave had been replaced by Monterey & we lost a lot of stuff.

However, there’s a weirdie, too. She has two HDs, as pictured.

Get Info reveals one is running 12.2.1, the other 12.2.2. How is this even possible?

AppleCare tells me this can’t be fixed without reformatting the entire disk. Apple tells me the extra HD is not taking up any extra space. On a 256GB SSD, that matters.

Seagate HDD external partition problem

Ever since the geniuses at the Apple Store 'upgraded' my wife's MBA to Monterey, we've had nothing but problems.

HDD don't play well with APFS so there isn't even that option in Disk Utility.

Once the 2TB HDD was erased, partition was greyed out. Looks like Disk Utility defaults to Master Boot Record. Turns out it requires GUID.

AppleCare techs didn't know that. Two hours into the afterlife...

I have the full Logic Pro academic program that unfortunately is too old to use any more and I wasn't sure if it was worth anything to sell?

icloud sign in problems

I signed out of icloud on my imac (2011 high sierra) as it was not syncing with my iphone and ipad. But I cannot sign in now, I can sign in ok through a browser, but not through system preferences.

I have tried most of the usual things such as restating the computer, and clearing caches; but no luck.

5,1 cMP ram upgrade?

Just picked up a 5,1 cMP and 24" cinema display on the weekend. It'a 2012 stock 3.2 quad core, 1TB HDD, 8G (4x2g) ram and Radeon 1g video card.
I have installed an SSD for the main drive running High Sierra and don't plan on going newer with an OS.

I am running MAC OSX 10.13.6. I cannot afford to upgrade to 64 bit applications or lose files created with 32 bit applications. Hence I have not upgraded my system. The present one suits me fine.

Replacing a battery in a mid 2012 Macbook Pro

Hey all,

My trusty Macbook Pro's battery is completely pooched. If I disconnect the charger, the machine shuts off. The battery says 'Replace Now' (which doesn't leave much room for interpretation lol). I see iFixit has a replacement + tools for about $115.00 CAN. Amazon of course has cheaper options.

I bit the bullet and purchased the new iPhone SE3 (2022). Smaller form factor, 4.7" screen and only fingerprint reader instead of facial recognition. Neither are a problem for me coming from a 6s with the same dimension and fingerprint reader. Not sure about the facial recognition because my granddaughter can open her mom's phone using facial recognition.

Usernames/Passwords not saved (OS Monterey 12.2.1, 2020 Macbook Air)

I set Auto Login in Users & Groups but that only works when I'm initially logging in upon startup, not for my various user/pass for websites.

Wiping iPhone 6

I recently got a new iPhone 13 to replace my 6 that no longer accepts app upgrades and battery dies fast. I was thinking of wiping 6 and downloading as much of my old country music as possible onto it. I would then use it in my truck to listen to the music. Phone came from Telus after ordering online. early 2015 MBP MagSafe issue

Some time ago, I had issues with no charge light on my connection. All good chargers. Was going to order a new DC in-board MagSafe but, when reseating the in-board connector to the logic board, it worked......for 2 weeks. Stopped charging again last night. This morning, I reseated again and sure enough, it's charging. What am I looking at here? Possible build up of corrosion in there somewhere? Replace the whole DC in-board magSafe connector?

When my Mac commits code using Git, it gets rejected by Husky, and I see the following error:

Reinstalling OSX to sell MBP: disk doesn't appear in Installation

I've made it to this step, but no disk appears (see last sentence below) in the Install OS X window that says, 'Select the disk where you want to install OS X."

So before contacting Apple Support, does anyone know what I can do to continue prepping my MBP to sell?

How to get songs from Mac to iPhone ?

Hello,

I have a MBA M1 and an iPhone XS Max.

Don't know how to get songs from my Mac to my iPhone.

Used to do it no problem with iTunes and my older iPhone 6s but everything's changed since I last tried that about 4 years ago !!

Was able to put an mp3 file from my Mac to my iPhone with 'Air drop' but instead of going into the Music app on my iPhone, it went to an obscure file folder on my iPhone ??

Any help or suggestions appreciated !

drag & drop in iTunes defunct?

I've always dragged and dropped into iTunes with my audio files. I have an mp3 file that is not wanting to show. When dragging, I get the plus as though it is being added, but nowhere to be found in my Library. Has iTunes changed the manner of importing files?

New MacBook Pros

Anyone have thoughts on the current MacBook Pros? I have a 2015 MBP that's starting to show its age and am debating going for an M1 chip or trying to hold out to see if anything mindblasting comes out this fall. Don't do anything too intense but I do throw around several hundred mb photoshop files and I'm trying to teach myself some video techniques.

iPhone 11 not recognized

My iPhone 11 is frozen. The screen will not swipe. Even after hard resets. I had my Timer on before this happened and the damn ringer goes off every 10 minutes. I can't shut that off. I had to put it under a blanket to shut it up! lol
I tried a RECOVERY process, but that did not do anything. There is a RESTORE option, but I hesitate to try that not knowing what I might lose - contacts, texts, calendar appointments, etc. I think my photos and emails should be safe, right?

Downgrade Catalina to Mojave

Before downgrading from Catalina I have to download Mojave. I have followed special links from various web sites that got me to Mojave in the apple store. At this point I understand that I should be able to download Mojave. However, the app is set for an upgrade and dose not show a download button. Does anyone know how I can download Mojave?

Time Capsule and Monterey/M1Max issue - I'm fed up!

Since I got my M1Max MBP 14", it hasn't properly sync'd with my 3TB time capsule. My other computers, no problem.

I thought the issue was that I was on wifi, and I have about 700GB of data on the computer. So I hardwired, and no, still not able to complete a backup. The TC has over 1.5TB free on it.

I hardwired directly to the TC. I hardwired directly to my router. Neither affected it.

I tried having wifi and hardwire at the same time. No dice.

MS Office 2011 no more?

I installed this on my 2016 MBP in 2014 but now I'm using macOS Monterrey 12.0.1 and it seems I can't use it and must now go to the App Store and subscribe to MS Office monthly or annually.

Before I toss my CD for MS Office 2011 and subscribe to MS Office, is there any workaround to still use it?

Looking for external hard drive recommendations

Hi, I need to replace a 6Tb LaCie external drive I use for Time Machine backups. I've been told that Seagate and Western Digital drives are risky and that LaCie drives are also not reliable, even though they seem to be almost the only drives available in Canada. Glyph Studio and Oyen Digital Avastor HDX Pro have been recommended but they don't seem to be easily available north of the border.

Has anyone found a Canadian source for Glyph and Oyen drives?

question re disk reformatting

I have an old G4 that I will be putting up for sale soon but I want to be sure any data of mine is cleared off of it. I believe that I can go into Disk Utility and do ....I think it's "erase" to reformat it. I have two questions about this:

first, is it the erase function I want to use and
second, if I use it and the disk is reformatted, will the OS still work? I think all the applications that are loaded onto the machine will be removed but don't know if also the OS will be. I don't...

Issue with activation Lock

My father-in-law has had issue with his iPad that wouldn’t accept any passcodes. He tried erasing and restoring it through iTunes, but, in the process, can’t get past the “Activation Lock.” I suggested he log into iCloud.com and erase and remove the device. It didn’t seem to appear as a device.

Any suggestions from this point would be much appreciated.

Blue light screen protector

Just before the pandemic, I purchased one of these for the wife's MBA on a trip to the US. Could not find anybody here to install it. All the Mac shops said bubbles or dust ruined the sheet. Cannot be replaced here, not available for sale.

2008 mac pro question

I recently bought a 2008 mac pro that was advertised as a quad core 2.8 and I got a really sweet deal on it. I took it for what he said and started using it. I recently went into system report and about this mac (don't know why I missed this) and see 2x 2.8 quad core and under hardware overview I see 8 cores.
