Niece's messed up MacBook...

My niece dropped off her early 2008 2.4GHz 13" MacBook for me to fix. It was super slow, many Apple and other apps wouldn't even boot, or if they did, would crash or just quit when opened, or just wouldn't operate properly, ie: Mail etc..

Her large photo and music folders were really messed up etc. - basically a generally and really sick OS MB!! And besides, the HD only had a few GBs of free space left.

So the plan was to replace the 160GB HDD with a larger WD Black 500GB HDD, and add a 4GB RAM kit, and upgrade to SL 10.6.8, and do it for $200.00 max. She just recently lost her Seattle area job.

So first make a CCC clone backup of her Leopard 10.5.8 from her 160GB MB, which I couldn't believe she didn't have, to a spare USB 500GB drive I had.

It took just short of 6 hours to clone yesterday evening!!! WTF???

So I created a new admin 'Tester' user for myself, no password, put the new WD HDD in the NewerTech combo dock, partition/formatted it and used CCC to clone it as a bootable backup via FW connection. It still took over two hours after using 'Monolingual' to clean the excess, which saved 12GBs of surplus languages etc.!!!

I couldn't change many of her user pref pane settings and then discovered that she had FileVault enabled.

So now booted from the WD HDD in the NT combo Dock, and now with enough HD space to turn FileVault Off, it says it's going to take 3 hrs 48 minutes!!

Now about an hour later, it's still saying 2hrs 52 min.

Is that really normal that it would take that long, just to turn OFF and disable her FileVault?? Gheese!!

And I have no idea why she would have even turned it On!!!

But still lots of work to do on it!! I'm sure glad she won't be back from her trip for a week or so. Definitely NOT a quick fix!!! ;)
