Is it possible to KILL the digital out?

I am having serious trouble with my audio port being stuck in 'digital out' mode. I'm tired of fighting with it. The paper clip trick doesn't always work anymore. Surely there must be a way to go into Terminal and permanently kill that setting? I've spent hours on Google and I can't find anything about that, just using the paperclip to reset it.
