Petition in favour of an unfettered Internet

The US and the EU are on the verge of giving rich corporations the right to control what we all see on the Internet. It’s the apocalypse of the Internet as we know it. But free speech advocates and web companies are fighting back.

Please tune in to this petition and read all about it: Avaaz - Internet Apocalypse?

Thank you!

Mbp ram

Looking at a couple of Laptops.

One possibility is the new mid range 13" MBP retina. This ships with 8GB RAM which should be more than adequate for the rather light use this will receive.

Of course with the neverendum OS bloat will it be adequate 2 or 3 years down the road?

So the question is. How hard is it to add aftermarket RAM to these puppies?

Had to double check that it wasn't April 1st..

Sheesh seems cheap, $15/Month addon for unlimited talk/text & data? Cheaper than going with Roam or any other carrier. Interested to see what the details are for coverage and whatnot.

iPad 2 - wifi dying?

My wife's iPad continually drops wifi. I updated her to iOS 7, nothing. Change the wifi security type, ensured her birghtness wasn't on the lowest setting. Pretty much everything I read, I tired.

I am using an Airport Extreme Base Station as well as the Rogers Cisco router. She sees them both, can't connect to either until I do a hard reset of the iPad, then a reset of the network settings. Yes, I must do both resets to work.

I'm a believer that with electronics, it either works or doesn't work. Am I wrong here or should I look at buying her an iPad Air for her birthday?

This just started happening 5 days ago. She was using iOS 6 and it just started. iOS 7 didn't remedy anything.

Thoughts?

Elgato - Video Capture ??

I have been reading on the web site and wondering if there are users who could answer my question.

I receive signal from Shaw. With the Video Capture unit, can I capture/record to my MacBook Pro and transfer to iTunes and then playback via airplay to television ??

Or, is this just my hopeful understanding.

My set top box is not PVR included unit.

April is start of season 4 of G of T...would like some choices.

Considering going where I said I'd never go...

No, no, not the dark side. ;) I'm not that insane. No, it's just after all that waiting for the new Mac Pro…I can't see myself getting one. :( Yes - just read MacDoc's post re:touring them around. But...

The quandary: my Mac Pro is now 6 years old - it's a 2008 3,1 - 2.8GHz single core, with 4 internal HDs, 18GB of RAM, a 4 port USB card and it's starting to seem slow, especially compared to my 2012 Retina i7. My Dell 24" 2407WFP monitor is now 7 years old, and although very good for its time, is not an IPS monitor.

Although it could be argued that an iMac could/would do all I need it to do and has been able to for a number of years, I've always had Macs in the pro line, since I like to be able to have more than one HD IN the box and I've also usually extensively upgraded components (including the drives) along the way. This Mac Pro is probably my least upgraded Mac ever, actually. It's had a lot of different drives in it over the years, but other than an eSATA card that was rendered obsolete by an OS upgrade it's had nothing other than the USB card, drives and memory upgrades. And now, the 2013 Mac Pros have essentially removed the option of internal upgrades - Apple has decreed that my desk will host a herd of boxes. Little bitty 11 lb computer, but a herd of boxes for drives and any PCI cards I may want to add. Expensive boxes.

Options:

1. Upgrade this Mac Pro. New video card? (this one is having trouble with PS6 and openGL, a documented issue - the solution at the moment is to turn off openGL, which isn't much of a solution, IMHO) - video cards that work in this generation appear to be scarce and expensive. RAM is very expensive for this beast - but I don't think more RAM will make much difference as the last addition did solve the excessive page out issues. An SSD for apps and the OS might speed things up a bit, but probably not as much as I'd like. USB 3.0 would be nice, as I have a number of external 3.0 drives - but the cards seem to be persnickety and expensive. Maybe $500 on a 6-year-old machine that is probably worth $700 or $800 so if I sold it? Hmmm…doesn't seem the best route.

2. A 2012 Mac Pro (if I could find one) Expensive - about the same as the bottom of the line 2013 if I'm to get anything with longevity. No USB 3.0, no Thunderbolt. Really not that different from a 2010…which is a 4-year-old machine.

3. A 2013 27" iMac - the 3.5GHz i7 for the greatest longevity. I saw a 3.5Ghz i7 on the refurb store yesterday - it's gone now, unfortunately. I'd get it with the 3TB Fusion drive and upgrade the RAM myself. Then would need to get enclosures for the homeless hard drives and probably a USB hub. Could run the Dell as a second monitor with an adapter, and if manna should ever fall from heaven, maybe upgrade to a newer IPS monitor. Will I be happy with the iMac's monitor - or will reflections be a problem? My desk is by a north-facing window. A bit of an unknown. My Retina seems to be ok in the same location. I do calibrate my monitors - just bought a new Spyder4Pro since Mavericks obsoleted my i1Display2. :(

I use my Macs mostly for designing websites and for processing photos with Lightroom and Photoshop CS6, both for clients' sites and for my own use, and I do some desktop publishing using InDesign. I don't do video - so also have no real need for the particularly video-oriented features of the new Mac Pro. I do tend to have a lot of apps open at any given time; LR, PS, ID, VMWare Fusion running Windows 7 (which is rather slow on this beast; even with 18 GB of RAM I tend to find it's a memory hog and I shut it down if I'm not actually using it), Word, Excel, Acrobat Pro, Transmit and at least three browsers.

And finally, there is still some value in this Mac Pro, so I could sell it and use the proceeds towards a new machine.

So - any thoughts? Advice? Anyone actually HAVE a new Mac Pro? Anyone gone from an old Mac Pro to an iMac? I'm annoyed that Apple went in the direction they did with the Mac Pro - I can understand it as a great video machine etc., but how about something for those of us who would actually like to be able to add things to our machines and keep the darn hard drives IN them? A slimmed down version of the cheese grater? Yeah - I know. We've been asking for it for years, and it's not likely to happen.

Touring MacPro

We've set aside one of the new towers for clients to "taste" for a couple of days in their own work environment.

Has been popular tho supply of the 6core and up is frustrating.

If you are curious and in the GTA contact us about a test run.

Be warned you have no choice but to be on Mavericks.

They ae pretty slick machines tho the older MacPros are still exceptionally popular.

For some users it's just what is needed and with the concentration on GPU acceleration in some apps....the gain is substantial.

This client was trying a 2.6 Retina 2012 - no slouch on it's own.

Geekbench 3 (64): 12428

Then tried the Quad MacPro.

Geekbench 3 (64): 14601

not even 20% more processing but his rendering times dropped in half or more thanks to the big gun cards.

We don't think the new tower will have as wide an application range as previous but no question for some it's terrific - we were already talking with some about racks and many like the portability - big power in a small footprint.

Quote:

Vast difference. Did same rendering tests as the other day. Times were less than half. More importantly, the GPU renderings actually looked amazing. So full settings GPU renderings that look great in under 30 seconds is something I can definitely work with. And to drop the anti-alias setting a bit to have almost instantaneous renderings for client meetings still produces fantastic images.

He's an architect and takes the machine to clients and makes changes in real time so the extra speed makes his presentations flow.

We were however surprised to note the Haswell 2.6 retina has the same benchmarks

Geekbench 3 (64): 14596

as the quad macpro ...a very decent GT750m 2 gb video card

twice the drive space ( unreal fast 800 mps ), more ram and a gorgeous Retina screen for $200 less and will drive twin big screens as well.

We think the entry tower should really be at $2500.

The 6 core tho looks to be good value ....40% more speed, more ram and better video cards for $1k more - what's not to like.

Geekbench 3 (64): 20626

Apple pretty much has it's ducks in a row from Retina 13 up through the towers tho the top end towers per usual are a lot of money that is not proportional to the gain

The all around media pro winner we think is the 2.3 Retina or the 2.6 Retina. Big power, brilliant connectivity and screen and very easy to handle.

With a 4k screen and Applecare the 2.3 Retina is under $3500. :yikes:

Controlling data usage on a wifi ipad?

I think I've found a limitation (though likely well known and probably serves a purpose) in Apple's ios regarding controlling data usage on a wi-fi ipad. Am I correct that there is no real way to control what apps can use data, similar to the way you can customize on an iphone?

Here's what I'm trying to explore. I typically use my iphone 5S's Personal Hotspot feature to tether my wi-fi ipad. This was worked for me for years with various iphones with no real need to buy a celluar version ipad.

I'm heading out of country in the near future and will be on a fixed travel data plan on my iphone. It's fairly easy to limit your data usage on the iphone but was planning to also taking my ipad and thought I'd tether it from time to time. (It would be great to be able to set up a "travel profile" that would make all the needed tweeks at one time for those occassions where you require). I'm concerned about all of the background updates, etc., that happen when my ipad connects to my personal hotspot wifi. It seems (correct me if I'm wrong) it's either all or nothing - airplane mode or normal?

I'm aware that I can try to find other wifi options, etc. Also, there are probably third party apps that allow me to at least see what is using my data? I'm just making sure that I haven't missed an option within the ios that would allow me to use my ipad regularly, but mindful of my data usage.

Thanks.

Mavericks audio issue

Been searching here for a reference to this issue, but haven't come across one, so posting a new thread, rather than burying this in the lengthy Mavericks thread.

Here's the problem:

I upgraded my MacPro to Mavericks about two months ago and discovered a problem that remains unresolved today, despite my conversations with Apple Care.

For years I have been creating videos which include voiceover segments, using a headset/microphone connected via USB.

There appears to be a glitch in Mavericks preventing it from recognizing headset hardware.

At first I assumed it related to my 7-year-old Plantronics headset. Spent time on the phone with Plantronics service desk, concluded that perhaps my unit was simply too old. So I went shopping and picked up a new Logitech H390 supposedly OSX compatible. But I am not able to access this hardware either.

My system profiler shows that the computer recognizes the device plugged in (screen shot 1)

but the device does not show up in the sound preferences panel in order to select it (screen shot 2).

Apple Care tells me that Logitech needs to write new software to accommodate Mavericks. I have spoken with Logitech service desk, to inquire whether I need a special driver, and they tell me their equipment is designed to work with generic drivers. They say this is an Apple problem.

Meanwhile, to create a voiceover I have to record it with my video camera, upload to Final Cut, add as a video clip and kill the video … a very awkward, unnecessary process.

Wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and wondering if anyone has any solutions.

Also:

Mavericks has also introduced two new audio input/output options (Soundflower) which nobody at Apple Care seems to be able to explain.

Can anyone make sense of that?

Finally .... don't know what I'm doing wrong here, but just opened a photo bucket account to attach those screen shots. They're not appearing in the text of this post on my computer. I have to click the icon to open in a new tab.

Thanks in advance

Utorrent Mac Help

Hey Guys

I run you torrent mac to download large files. I have not had much issues until lately. For some reason, even with 100+ seeders 100+ leechers the speed drops to like 9k.... where before I would get 500-1mb..... I have read numerous tutorials on torrent, tried tweaking my settings but nothing helps... the port is showing green in torrent...

Oddly enough, when it slows, I close the program, reopen it and it works fast for a bit?

any suggestions? I was going to try transmission, however I do not want to lose my currently download...and I can't find the original torrent file.. maybe theres a way to export or find it? then transmission could resume it?

thanks

Jim

set mavericks tab to desktop?

I just updated to mavericks after sorting out a printing issue we were having at work. I love having tabs in folders, saves a lot of clutter. The one thing I wish that I could do, and maybe I can, is when opening a new tab instead of it showing all files, could it show the desktop?

I have looked in preferences and not seen anything about that. Any way to specify where a new tab opens?

Thanks

VIA Rail to kill service to the Maritimes?

Via Rail's Maritime-Quebec Passenger Service In Doubt

Via Rail says it could cancel passenger service from Quebec to the Maritimes if CN doesn't find an investor to buy a portion of its railway in northern New Brunswick.

CN announced last week that it will discontinue operations on a 70-kilometre section connecting Bathurst to Miramichi because their freight cars don't use the line.

Via Rail's Ocean line runs on the same route.

Spokesperson Mylène Bélanger said Via Rail will maintain the connection between Quebec and Halifax for as long as it can, but will not acquire the railway itself.

"At this time it's still a hypothetical question, but if this section is abandoned we'll look into the commercial viability of all other alternatives, for connecting between Halifax and Montreal, before adopting any other route,”

* * *

Daily passenger train service in the Maritimes was scaled back to three days a week in October 2012

My BIG Dilemma

Last week I did a install of lion on my system.

After I did the updates & reboot I got the error msg "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "jim" at this time"

Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.

Yes I had FileVault turned on, wish I didn't.

So from what I have been reading is Snow Leopard has FileVault 1 and Lion has FileVault 2.

I have been backing up though time machine for ever and have done restores many times.

Each time I do a restore I get the error msg.

I have tried to do install's and migration with both OS's with no luck.

Now after trying countless time I get this error msg.

Will come in a few post as it is long.

I don't know what I'm reading?

Can anyone help please?

Snowblower advice.

Hello all,

Well just came in from shovelling snow, again! As I'm getting old and crotchety I'm thinking of getting a snow blower. I live in Windsor and we get about 40 inches a year, but this past two years we've been hit much harder than normal.

I don't need a public works machine, I had two electric snow shovels but they lack the ability to actually move the stuff. .... And while I'm not a fan of gas snow blowers I guess I don't have an option. As I live in the city, it will be for my driveway, sidewalk, and the snowplow "gift" at the bottom of the driveway. I was thinking of a machine not too heavy and about 24" wide . Also I would like to keep it under $900 if possible.

Any recommendations on brands and where to buy?

Macbook Pro 13" Issues

Hi,

My wife has received a new Macbook Pro from work. It is a brand new model.

Her issue is when she tries to upload pictures from IPhoto to any of the picture websites she orders from(Costco, YIG etc;)

I'm figuring there's a plugin missing, but I'm not 100% sure what it could be. Her java seems fine.

I've tried the same websites on my Imac and had no issues.

Currently she can select the photo to upload but once selected it just sits there and does nothing.

podcast sync problem (ipod touch)

I have 13 podcasts in iTunes on my computer. 1 is from one source and the other 12 are a different source. I can't get all of them onto my ipod Touch. Only the first two I ever downloaded are showing up (one from each source). I've tried to find out how to select the rest but with no luck.

I just cleared the two I had on the ipod, off of it. When I select to sync podcasts again, only 2 still show up as options to put on it.

What gives?

I did read a number of frustrated comments in various forums about iTunes.

I have:

iTunes: 11.1.3 (8)

iPod Touch: iOS 6.1.3 (it's telling me I can go to 6.1.5 if I want to update)

Thanks for any insights. The iTunes Help was no use.

Mavericks you try my patience - no java sites will work

I thought I'd give Mavericks another try and now I discover that no java sites will work except the java version confirmation site.

I've Googled and reinstalled, restarted etc ad nauseam with no change.

It's all very good and all that Apple wants to keep me protected, but it's pretty useless when their OSX Mavericks prevents me from doing so and it's a *&^%$#* PITA!!!

I can't even access any of the java test sites, and end up with a notice saying security settings in Safari have blocked an untrusted application and no option usually other than to again open my Safari prefs for security that still shows the site I'm trying to access with capitol letters saying ALLOW as an option, just like most of the other listed sits do. Just stupid.

Anyone know a solution??

BYW: The sites all work well when I'm booted into SL, and hello Apple, I'm still safe and sound thanks and without all the OSX Mavericks PITA hassles and stuff not working.

As I said, my patience to get it working properly is really getting really thin and I have already wasted way too many hours attempting a fix!!

Winnipeg - gas pipeline explodes

Natural gas pipeline explodes near Otterburne

A natural gas pipeline is on fire this morning after exploding overnight near Otterburne, about 50 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

St-Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded around 1:05 a.m. to what they're calling a "loud explosion."

"I was out for a dog walk and saw a huge fire ball-like burst of light to my south, and knowing that there's a gas relay station at the north end of Ile des Chênes, that seems the most likely candidate," said area resident John Sadoway.

"It lit up the whole sky here for half an hour. The sky's still glowing, actually," said another witness, Tyler Holigroski.

Police have confirmed the fire is coming from the pipeline, but say the burning gas is non-toxic.

The pipeline, which is owned by TransCanada PipeLines, has been temporarily shutdown

iPad 3 and water damage.

Hi everyone,

I have an iPad 3 which, due to an unfortunate sequence of events, was dipped in water for about 10 minutes.

I put it in rice for about 5 days, and upon turning it on I have noticed the following:

-Water under about 60% of the screen (clouding) .. doesn't seem to be reducing in size so far

-Back camera does not work

-Cannot turn it off (eventually turns itself off)

I'm wondering if anyone can weight in on whether this is repairable and whether it would be worth it (costs).

Thanks,

Josh.

What ate my data?

Because I really don't use my iPhone that much, I'm on a budget pay as you go service. Data is $10 per 100mb. I will usually tether my phone to my MBP whilst on the train and visit forums that are pretty much text only. I close all other apps on my MBP to limit data usage. On most days I will go through about 3-10mb in a half hour period. This morning I looked at 3 text only web pages during my trip and was horrified to see that my total data usage during the session was 223mb!!!! (usage for each session shows up on MyWi).

How the heck does that happen????

disk utility gives red warning: need to reformat drive

So, this is my first time at this sad point . My macbook (2010) had been getting slower and slower and I ran numerous disk utility first aids. The drive was always repaired but the problem persisted. In another attempt at first aid I tried OnyX. That is when the grey screen of OS X Utility options showed up. The only option that worked was to reinstall OS Mavericks on an external drive. I know that I need to reformat my macbook drive. I'm wondering what I can do to retrieve any information from the last 2 days (I backed up 2 days ago) aside from taking it into the shop for likely an absence of a week or more.

Buying an inkjet printer

Buying an inkjet printer

Narrowed it down to two printers, Both are made by Brother

One is the Brother MFC-J470DW Wireless Inkjet Multifunction Printer for $59.90

The other is the Brother MFC-J650DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer for $89.99

Both printers are on sale,

One for $59.90 is built like a tank and I know how it runs, I've had it before.

The other for $89.99 I'm not sure about because it has a touch screen,

Not sure about the longevity of touch screens on printers.

Also it is a photo printer with a media slot and a usb thumb drive slot.

Which one should I buy?

Wanted To Buy Looking for Quicksilver (for parts / psu / logic board)

hey there guys

so.. i was soo excited yesterday because i finally tracked down a copy of the elusive Emagic Logic 6 (the version that works in both os9 + osx) after looking for it for a few years continually...

and so i was geeking around and i read some stupid article on the net about how someone had gotten a 9600XT powermac g5 oem video card to work in a quicksilver.. so i tried cutting the traces on the card and put it in my quicksilver..

tried to boot up..

and it wouldnt power on.

so now my quicksilver is forever stuck in this state...

i had just bought some vintage midi devices + logic 6..

and was super excited and now im super bummed out!!

im trying to diagnose the problem further.

apparently it can be that the pram battery is dead..but ive swapped the battery with the pram battery from an MDD and the MDD has no problem powering up...

basically i need a quicksilver to try to see if it starts up with a different powersupply plugged in... so i can diagnose the problem to see whether its hte logic board or the psu..

ive read horror stories online of someone who replaced both + STILL couldnt get it to work again, so this leaves me disheartened and wanting to walk away from the whole vintage mac thing altogether..

my main interest isnt that its powerful hardware.. its more to do with being able to use vintage software apps... i have newer computers as well obviously for newer apps.

anyways.. I feel horrible wasting this great little machine. i had just fitted it with a g4port that i bought from another member of this site.. and i wanted to be using it with logic/cubase/studio vision etc

does anyone else have another broken quicksilver sitting around somewhere?

that perhaps may have different problem and i could transplant the psu into this one to bring it back to life? (mac organ donor ?)

How safe is Pages 09 on iCloud?

One of my main apps is Pages. When Apple announced a new version of Pages which took away existing features, I decided to stick with what I've got, to not upgrade. However I also use iCloud. Tonight I attempted to open some very recent Pages 09 files on iCloud and and found I couldn't, was told I'd have to upgrade. Something about creating a copy of the older file, which I did, only it won't work with the the older Pages at all, and thus forced to upgrade. I need something which is solid, reliable, dependable with no downgrades. I have very important files on iCloud.

This is a most confusing and unsettling situation, quite unlike Apple. What gives?

merge tv show season

So I am ripping some dvd's of shows I have, was putting some on my iPad mini. I labeled the entire set season 1, went through and labeled each episode number and episode name. When I drag and drop to my iPad and look at it on my iPad, its a mess, I have files all over the place, its not kept together like an album would be and because its this way I can't tell which is episode 1 because there seems to be no order to anything. I really don't like the way iOS 7 handles video files, can't read the names if they are long and no sorting options.

So the simple question is how do I group a single season together so it shows in order of episode?

LogMeIn’s Free Remote Access Service is Being Discontinued

In case anyone like me uses this service.

LogMeIn’s Free Remote Access Service is Being Discontinued | iPhone in Canada Blog - Canada's #1 iPhone Resource

Quote:

LogMeIn, a company that provides software as a service-based remote connectivity, collaboration, and support solutions to businesses and consumers, has decided after 10 years that it will be removing its free remote access product. The company announced that they will be unifying their free and premium remote access products.

The new product will be a paid-only offering and the company says it will offer the best remote accessing program on the market. LogMeIn will be notifying users who will be affected by the changes within in the coming weeks.

The following are some of the changes we will see within the coming weeks. Starting in January, the company will gradually migrate users of the LogMeIn and Ignition-branded services onto one product. LogMeIn Pro users will be upgraded to a premium remote access service which includes the capability to sync and share files with services such as Cubby, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and SkyDrive.

If you are a LogMeIn iOS user, the company explains below on how you will be affected by the upcoming changes.

For owners of LogMeIn Ignition for iPad/iPhone and LogMeIn Ignition for Android”

While customers who purchased these apps are impacted by this change, we have taken steps to be especially attentive to these customers. LogMeIn Ignition for iPad/iPhone and Android app purchasers will receive significant discounts, as well as generous terms to ease the transition. Details of these offers are being sent to Ignition mobile users this week, both via email and in-product notifications.

Current users of the free version will have seven more days to use the product from the time they log into their account, during which time they can decide whether to upgrade to the paid version. The paid version costs about $100 per year, so if you are a user of their free service, it’s time to decide if you get enough value from the product to justify the price tag. LogMeIn has provided an FAQ for users which can be found here.

Mouse Pointer disappears in Remote Desktop

I have an HTPC (mini) I've been controlling using Remote Desktop... recently when I remote to it, the mouse pointer disappeared. I can't figure out why or how to bring it back.

From my Mac Pro and Mac Mini, I can use the pointer, but when I click on the HTPC screen, it disappears. Move mouse out of HTPC space to my own desktop, it reappears. From my MBP and my wife's MB, it works no problem.

The odd thing is it's working from the HTPC to the desktop Mini the other way around.

Any ideas as to what's causing this, and how to bring it back?

Bombardier slashes workforce

Bombardier lays off 1,700 workers in Canada, U.S.

Bombardier is slashing six per cent of its workforce in the Aerospace division.

The Montreal-based company told employees on Tuesday that cuts are required due to delays in the launch of new planes and tough market conditions.

Out of the 1,700 employees who will lose their jobs, 1,100 are in the Montreal region and 600 are in the U.S., mostly in Wichita, Kansas.

According to a company spokesperson, the layoffs will affect temporary and permanent staff in manufacturing, assembly, engineering, and sales.

The company said it needs to preserve cash amid delays in the CSeries commercial jet and Learjet 85 business jet, as well as due to tough market conditions.

Telemarketer driving me nuts...

I'm just wondering if any of you have had these particular calls. The caller ID says "1-000-000-0000 - so that's spoofed.

The caller is clearly Indian (probably calling from an Indian call center) and says he's calling from "Bell Canada" with "special offers" and when I respond that I'm on the Do Not Call list and they're not allowed to call me, he talks right over me and then proceeds to argue with me! (Until this lot started calling, I'd never had that response - usually they either hang up or apologize and then hang up) I was so shocked by the argument that I then called Bell - and after some back and forth, managed to get myself added to their internal DNC list.

That was in December. Well…yesterday, they called again. I didn't pick up. Today - AGAIN. This time I picked up and told him not to call me etc., at which point he told me it was his job to call me every day and flat out refused to take me off their calling list, refused to get a supervisor (went away and came back, claiming HE was the supervisor)! Again - I called Bell, this time finding a number for their Resolution Centre and speaking to a second level supervisor who again put me on their internal DNC list. He also told me that all Bell telemarketers or workers have ID numbers and to ask for that. He said it might not be Bell (no kidding - I was rather doubtful that it was from the outset, because of the extremely aggressive and impolite responses from the callers).

An hour goes by. These idiots called me again. This time I decided to try to find out if it was really Bell (my next step would be a complaint to the CRTC if it was) so I asked for the caller's ("Peter") Bell ID. Which, of course, he refused to give me - his shaky command of the English language at this point became quite evident as he struggled to tell me why he couldn't give me this info. Meanwhile, he keeps trying to talk over me and I finally hang up after threatening to call the police. 5 minutes go by and you guessed it - they call again - different guy, same accent. This time I just tell him that I've told them repeatedly that I don't want them to call me and that now I am calling the police and I hung up. Obviously, there isn't a damn thing the police can do about it and I'm not calling them, but hey, maybe it will stop them for a bit.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Panasonic phone set that has quite a few nifty features - including the ability to block calls. I hadn't had the time to set it up, but clearly now isn't soon enough. I just hope it works, based on spoofed caller ID. I did have Rogers call-blocking which they gave me free for a month (another idiot telemarketer that wouldn't stop calling) but am not happy about having to *PAY* to get these twits to stop calling and looked for other solutions.

So - anyway - just wondered if anyone else had encountered these horribly aggressive clowns. It's become like some sort of challenge - I find myself plotting nasty things to do to them - borrowing a friend's 6-year-old and putting him on the phone with them (he's a very creative kid who likes to talk - he might be able to keep 'em going for a while), blasting them with a hunting horn we have…etc.

Bigger iPhones? Serious?

So, Sep 2012 and I order myself a shiny, new, white iPhone 5. Couple weeks later it arrives, truly a thing of beauty. In order to keep it as such, I purchased a Griffin Survivor case for it. My cell phones tend to get used, not caressed, & I wanted it to look as good the day I sold it as when I purchased it. A cheap, thin, "pretty" case wasn't going to cut it.

Coming from a Palm Treo 680 background, the iPhone is already largish. Slap the Survivor case on it and it becomes sizeable, to the point that it's difficult to simply slip it into a pocket in my jeans. Just measured it in the case, a whisker shy of 5.75", corner to corner, on a phone with a 4" screen.

That said, here's an article that notes Apple is neglect in not offering a phone with a screen of 5.6" (!) or larger (!!). Frankly, I'm somewhat gobsmacked.

"Phablets"? Really?

First, does anybody really want a phone that, with a good case, is heading well into 7" territory? I can hear it now, "Is that a cell phone in your pocket or are you just glad to see me." It doesn't matter if the sucka is thin as a credit card, what about the length? I recall some of the very first cell phones. They were monstrosities & the public couldn't wait for them to downsize. Now, the clamour is for bigger?

Second, where the hell are we suppose to stow this damn thing? In our murse? Jeezuz...

If Apple does, in fact, head this direction, I hope they remember those of us who don't wish to carry around a TV monitor in our pants and have the sense to furnish a smaller version. Hopefully, one that doesn't look like it was purchased at the candy store...

Thoughts?

Is it possible to re-assign a key?

I probably broke a serious rule yesterday when I took my Airmac into the bath area and got a bit of water on the keyboard

Now my comma function and period function are not working

the tech at Carbon Computing suggested the repair would be in the $350 range

This is a 3 year old Airmac on it's second repair and I'd rather just buy new at this point if I can't get things working one way or the other

He also said it might return on it"s own once dried out and not to use it except to get a message out to the Ehmac community

Well I was just wondering if two keys I never use such as this one { and This one } could be re assigned to be my period and comma functions?

Tips greatly appreciated

Film cameras - would anyone still want one?

I have the following; and in case anyone is interested, I shall post a classifieds.

1. An old Canon EOS 300 (I think it was sold as the Rebel in North America) that uses film. The camera works fine except that the built-in Flash has been disconnected and only external flashes work. The reason for this is that I had an issue in 2006 where the body heated up very badly, and so the main circuit and some other parts were replaced.

2. The original 28-80 Canon lens that came with the camera;

3. A Sigma lens 70-300;

4. Some kind of filter (but it would need some cleaning or needs to be discarded);

5. A lens hood.

I also have two cases - a leather Caselogic (that does not fit this camera - it was for another camera that no longer works), and another case that actually fits this camera (looks iike leather but I am not sure).

Do people still use film cameras? Or would either of these lenses/cases/filters/hoods be useful for anyone here?

Cheers

dual play on my panasonic tv?

I recently bought a new panasonic 55" 3D LED smart tv . I was surprised to see the 3D signal detector pop up when playing call of duty ghost for ps4, playing against my friend on split screen. I hit the 3D button and was very pleasantly surprised to see the screen go full as it was doing dual play. The problem is I only stays that way for about 30 seconds before reverting to split screen. Is there a reason it would do this? I love the feature, but frustrated it does not seem to work, is it because the tv does not support it? It's not listed in the specs for the tv. Why would it work for a short amount of time then stop working?

The Miscellaneous Links Of Interest Thread

I often run across stories that might be of interest to ehMacers, but really don't warrant a new thread every time I find one. With that in mind, I thought I would start this thread as a 'catch-all' for items that members find and want others to have access to the story.

I hope others find this useful and that it reduces the number of threads here by using this one for odd items of interest.

I will start with this:

Would like to post a classified, denied access

Hi,

I've read the rules and I believe I meet the criteria - however, when I try to create a new thread in the classifieds, I arrive at a page telling me that I don't have permission to access the page. Do I need administrator action before I can have permission to post a classified?

Vinyl cutters / parallel port hard lock

hey guys,

currently building a Mac Pro as a present for my dad actually, he's a novice pc user, always ends up calling me with a new popup or virus on his computer (don't you love windows)

he's a graphic designer/artist, and does the majority of his work using photoshop, and his vinyl cutting program (signmax)

his plotter is a roland camm-1 which operates via serial port and parallel port

there is a hardlock installed on the parallel port to permit the signmax program to work

Now, I'd eventually like for him to use this Mac Pro full time, but yes I'll need to source a mac version of signmax (if even it exists..)

And the other problem is a parallel port on a Mac Pro. I've just received a pci-e parallel port + serial port card today (10$ on ebay), fingers crossed it'll be picked up in os-x and likely work in windows.

So, question for you, any vinyl cutting people here? anyone have mac software recommendations ? any feedback would be great!

Corrupted Mavericks Finder Prefs Mouse Problem

Installed Mavericks when it first came out and it's been ok, but recently slow downs and weird mice problems have forced me to delete finder prefs every second day. See below a weird anomaly I encountered when trying to quit the finder; two finders. Now double clicking on my mouse will select an item (app or folder) but will only open it about 5 percent of the time. I have the identical problem with a blue tooth magic mouse, an old wired single click Apple mouse, and a logitech bluetooth mouse. Associated with this problem is a display of all of my open apps just as if I had selected COMMAND TAB and this occurs here and there while using my mouse for unrelated activity. Many scrolling related problems have also recently occurred. Deleting finder prefs does not solve problem.

-Late 2009 intel imac, 4 gig ram, 150 empty hard drive space. Mac OS X 10.9.1 No recently hardware or software changes 'cept disconnecting my printer.

Thanx for reading. Any thoughts or suggestions...

Early 2011 MacBook Pro - failure rate?

Early-2011 MacBook Pro owners report hardware failures & system crashes

Reports of failing MacBook Pros have been flooding in this month, with owners of early-2011 models with AMD graphics claiming to be suffering from system crashes and hardware problems that have been described as "critical".

A huge thread on Apple's Support Communities (at 174 pages and counting) reveals that the problem, which first emerged in February last year, has escalated since 2014 arrived as more and more owners of the affected models begin to experience issues.

While playing games, watching HD video or performing another graphics-intensive task, users have witnessed their displays distorting, or sometimes going completely blank. Rebooting the machine temporarily resolves the issue, but it almost always returns.

Eventually, many users found that their MacBook boots to a blue or grey screen. Currently, the only permanent resolution is to get a replacement logic board, but that can prove quite costly. It's believed that overheating is to blame for the issue.

2 Channel Video Playback and 4 Channels of Audio

Hi Folks,

Working on a project that will require 2 HD video outputs along with 4 channels of audio. Ideally, everything is coming from one small computer.

The video will be projected on 2 separate projects. The audio will go into an amp.

The current Mac Mini's have a thunderbolt output and a hdmi output.

Anyone know of a device that can separate the HDMI/Thunderbolt signal into distinct audio channels?

Thanks.

Keyboard (M7803) Upgrade?

I have an old MAC keyboard, the M7803 model and right now I have it totally pulled apart. Great keyboard but old, started sticking a bit and being clear it really showed up the dirt. :D

Thing is I like the keyboard and plan to use it a while longer... just curious if there was ever a USB2.0 option? Maybe a replacement part from Mitsumi I could replace this with and get USB2.0 out of it since right now it's USB1.2 or lower.

Long shot I know but, hey, might be something they made for warranty repairs or something.

Thanks

Page goes missing!

I am having an on-going problem with a newsletter I am writing using Pages 09 on an imac running 10.6.8. This newsletter contains text and pictures, and is four pages long. When I update it for the new month's issue, I start with the current issue, delete old text and pictures , and insert new text and pictures. This works fine most of the time, but sometimes when I delete a picture on, say, page 2, the last page, page 4, and its contents disappear, and I am left with only pgs 1,2,and 3. If at that time, I do a "Edit / Undo" the fourth page mysteriously reappears with all content intact. Can anyone explain what's happening, and what to do to avoid this problem?

Thanks,

Kevin

Mail and Rules

This is one of those things that has bugged me about OS X Mail for a long time... and only now am I remembering to vent publicly :)

Am I completely obtuse (careful....) or is there no shortcut in Mail to add a Rule? And... if not .... why? It would seem to be something that most people would find useful...

Also wondering if it's something that I can set up in Sys Prefs - which I doubt, as there are no direct menu commands applicable.

TIA,

M

Flashing folder on 2010 MBA

I came home today to hear a loud noise from my wife's office and when I went in her 2010 MacBook Air was spinning its drives loudly and the screen was grey with a flashing folder with a question mark on it. Not good. I have an external DVD drive and an external USB drive with a clone of my MB Pro so I tried the typical Option key boot figuring I could run a hardware test and see what it found or do a recovery but it won't give me the boot manager but instead gives me a lock icon and it won't take the admin password.

I should note we bought this machine used months ago from a guy that seemed legit and it's been great for us so far until today.

What do I try next?

Alternative for MacBook Air 11”?

I bought a MacBook Air 11” with 256GB storage, 8GB RAM and UK keyboard for my wife, who is a journalist. Included in the price were Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband and OSX. She started trying to set it up last week. There have been problems with setting it up for secure use, even with the help of her employer’s computer tech. Like many publishers her employer uses Macs, mainly of older vintage. There is no MUG within several hours drive and online help is limited. She has given up and the MacBook Air is being returned to Apple next week. What would readers suggest as an alternative for this computer?

We have no use for iTunes, the Cloud or any other online app other than secure email, some general browsing and searches using anything but Google, such as DuckDuckGo.

Readers who wonder why security is important need only check on the experiences of The Guardian newspaper, its journalists such as Glenn Greenwald and anyone associated with them such as David Miranda. We also noted Obama’s recent statement that he is not allowed to change to an iPhone from his Blackberry for security. Yes, there are security issues with Apple, especially with Snowden disclosing that it is an agency of the NSA and then Apple late last year buying snoop company Topsy.

Here’s the killer reason why it is going back: Apple’s belligerent and anti-security software update system. This MacBook Air was built to order at the end of last month and yet it was delivered with outdated software. According to Fedex tracking it was picked up in Shanghai, China and sent via Memphis. It had not sat on a shelf in a box for several months. Software Update advises updates are available for most of the apps that were included with it. The current versions should have been on it but we thought it would be easy to upgrade. Today my wife hit “Install All” and could not get any further. We had expected the software to be updated just as it has been in the past on our 2008 iMac and old iBook G4. Apple has changed its whole update system. Although these updates are FREE, to correct deficiencies in its software, Apple demanded some sort of ID for App Store and a CREDIT CARD NUMBER. Naturally as a journalist who covers SCAMS my wife refused to give a credit card number when no payment was involved, either now or in future, pointing out that we have no use for App Store, which we have never used with our existing Macs. After several hours of arguing with obstructive and unhelpful support and representatives she gave up and demanded a refund. Apple agreed and we have received the refund email and label.

We are staggered at the stupidity exhibited by Apple, from Tim Cook downwards. Is there no concept of customer service at Apple? Do they have no concern about credit card and other security scams or are they getting too big a bung from their spy bosses or perhaps from the gangs who run credit card scams? No ethical company would demand credit card info when no payment is involved! All Apple had to do was update those apps that came with the computer and which have nothing to do with the unwanted App Store. That would have been the end of the matter and you would not now be reading this. Instead they have poisoned the whole relationship and alienated customers who have bought six previous Macs. Naturally we are now warning others of the problems of dealing with Apple in any capacity. How can Tim Cook preside over such blithering incompetence? Is he a managerial moron?

The MacBook Air 11” looks fine but unless Apple will sensibly and responsibly update its defective software then it is of no use to my wife. Our experience indicates that Apple is a case of “style over substance,” along with a definite shortage of integrity and customer service! It is very sad that our relationship with Apple and its products should end in this way.

Back to the question. What do you suggest as the nearest alternative from another supplier to the MacBook Air 11” specified above? We will appreciate your help.
