New Mac Pro orders open December 10th

I don't know about the rest of you, but my credit card is a little overloaded with holiday shopping... I may have to give this a pass for the time being.... :lmao:

Apple’s Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR are available to order on December 10

So far, the computer doesn’t have Canadian pricing, but in the U.S. it starts at $5,999 USD (about $8,060 CAD). The Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999 USD (roughly $6,716 CAD). It’s also unclear if the desktop is going to be available in Apple Stores across the country on the 10th, or if that’s just the day it begins online sales. The company’s website slated it for a fall release, but as it’s December now, we’ll count us as lucky Apple got the machine out before 2020.

'tis the season....

Can I get an aaaaaawwwwwwwww ?

.

This Christmas commercial is warming hearts across the internet -- and it only cost $130 to make
Every Christmas, big companies and high street brands pump serious money into making their annual holiday TV commercial.

But this year, a family-made ad, starring a hardware store owner's 2-year-old son and costing a mere $130 to make, has captured the hearts of viewers around the world.

Tom Jones, who runs family-owned Haford Hardware store in Rhayader, Wales, has been making seasonal ads and posting them on social media for three years. This year's commercial stars his 2-year-old son Arthur, and follows him as he helps out in the store over the Christmas period.

* * *

Jones filmed the advert with his best friend, Josh Holdaway. The pair shot and edited the film in a day, and spent just £100 ($130) on the video. The money went on a recording studio and sound engineer for the ad's soundtrack -- a dreamy version of Alphaville's 1984 hit "Forever Young."
"Arthur was brilliant -- the jobs he was doing in the video were not out of the ordinary," Jones told CNN. "He comes to the shop most days and tries to help out."
Jones said he was delighted with the reaction to the film. "I'm going to cherish it for the rest of my life," he added.

iPhone 11 Packaging

OK. This question may sound obscure or odd to you...

On all my previous iPhone purchases, I remember that the clear plastic sticks on and surround the phone front and back. However, there seems to be only one clear plastic covering the screen area and the back is bare and exposed on my recent purchase of the 11.

Is this normal?

I got this phone through the carrier and want to be sure that it was not an "open-box" item. Wouldn't be asking this question if I got the phone directly from Apple.

Memory for MacBook Pro - Early 2011

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that is running slow. It currently only has 4 GB of RAM installed in two 2GB modules. per Apple the maximum is 8 GB. However looking at the website Everymac.com it says it can handle up to 16 GB in total. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if that is correct. Also, any thoughts on best place to order the memory from. Thanks.

force empty trash?

I have been moving some things around, I had an external drive that had all my work data plus it doubled as a time machine backup for a short while in a transition period. I got a new external drive strictly for time machine which will back up the other external drive as well as my iMac. I did not want a backup on a months worth of time machine backups so I removed it in settings and dropped the time machine backup in the trash. I went to empty, took a long time and deleted most of it but there is still a bunch of time machine backups left and I get messages saying I cannot delete as files are still in use.

How do I force empty the trash? Running OS 10.13.6

My father-in-law has had issue with his iPad that wouldn’t accept any passcodes. He tried erasing and restoring it through iTunes, but, in the process, can’t get past the “Activation Lock.” I suggested he log into iCloud.com and erase and remove the device. It didn’t seem to appear as a device.

UN Abusing A Phoney Child

Phoney as hell!

The UN's Greta Thunberg climate gamble offers up a child who's mastered the art of regurgitating political slogans

Quote:

At the age of 17, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person to receive a Nobel Prize. The Pakistani activist had risen to world prominence as an advocate for women’s and children’s rights.

The world’s current superstar teen activist, 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, has also been nominated for a Nobel, which would make her the youngest recipient.

Greta is no Malala. She has been on an easy glide path to media celebrity and TV stardom, the product of a cultural and education system — and a global ideological movement — that finds it useful to manipulate children into becoming anxious activists.

Boot rom won't update

Alright. I am hoping that you guys might be able to help me out as i have a bit of an issue.

I went back to High sierra from Mojave as mojave started to have some issues on my newly upgraded 2010 MacPro 5.1.

here are the specs:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 3.46 GHz
Number of Processors: 2
Total Number of Cores: 12
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per Processor): 12 MB
Memory: 64 GB
Boot ROM Version: 138.0.0.0.0
SMC Version (system): 1.39f5
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f5
Serial Number (system): XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

*******************

As you can see, prior to go back to HS, i was hoping to get my boot rom to update to 140.0.0.0, but found out that it won't update to 140 or 142.

2 weeks after the upgrade, one of my SSD disk crapped out and bought a PCI card that can take a Crucial 1tb M2 NVME ssd drive.

I want to be able to boot to that drive instead of my Current one.

I also have a RX 580 Graphics card in running 3 monitors and a big screen.

My question to you is. Is there a way to upgrade the boot rom manually without installing Mojave as 10.14.x was very unstable on my macpro.

My issues with it was that one of my screen will start flickering, random screen going to sleep even though that feature was turned off and the performance wasn't there.

High Sierra is by far "in my own opinion" the most stable OS on this machine. screens doesn't flicker, runs super smooth even watching 4k video.

Here are the specs for my NVME card:

Apple SSD Controller:

CT1000P1SSD8:

Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,886,016 bytes)
TRIM Support: Yes
Model: CT1000P1SSD8
Revision: P3CR010
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Link Width: x4
Link Speed: 5.0 GT/s
Detachable Drive: No
BSD Name: disk1
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
Removable Media: No
Volumes:
EFI:
Capacity: 209.7 MB (209,715,200 bytes)
File System: MS-DOS FAT32
BSD Name: disk1s1
Content: EFI
Volume UUID: 0E239BC6-F960-3107-89CF-1C97F78BB46B
M2-SSD:
Capacity: 999.73 GB (999,726,694,400 bytes)
Available: 998.84 GB (998,841,233,408 bytes)
Writable: Yes
File System: Journaled HFS+
BSD Name: disk1s2
Mount Point: /Volumes/M2-SSD

Broken Glass Replacement?

Hey Guys,
Our 2017 iMac fell over and the glass cracked.. the screen works. On checking it is a Retina screen 21.5. Wife called Mac and they want 750$ plus tax to fix. They say the LCD is fused to the glass. I checked youtube/google and noticed this is true, however I was wondering if there was any options or hacks? Can the glass be removed and only replaced? any links on how to do that? Can the Retina screen be replaced with a regular screen? (or are the connectors different)? I am angry over this and trying to come up with a cheaper alternative. (oh and no warranty covers this)

Thanks!

G'day,

This started happening a few days ago and is quite frustrating.

Up until then I could export to Photoshop CS6 with layers and editable type.

After whirring for a few minutes, I get the following message:

That's it, no error number or reason.

I'm asking here because Adobe's help doesn't seem very helpful these days.

how to transfer iMessages from Mac to iPhone

My iPhone 5S seemed to have a big hissy fit last night and needed to be completely restored. It was doing a fun flashing apple logo. I guess it was upset about updating or something.

Anyway, I'm wondering how I can transfer my Message discussions from my Mac running 10.12.6 (High Sierra) to the iPhone. Or, is there a way to repopulate the discussions on the computer to the iPhone. Or, some sort of syncing.

The conversations made on the computer and the iPhone show up on each other and I assume this has something to do with Handoff.

TIA.

2010 MacPro and Mojave--works fine

Just wanted to say that I installed one of the recommended metal-compatible cards into the MacPro — a Sapphire Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB. Upgraded to Mojave easily from there. Only loss is the Apple logo on boot-up. I use three monitors and used to rely on a pair of 5770s. This card operates all three monitors handily alone.

Glaring inconsistency in the "clock" app on iOS

I was wondering if they have or will ever fix one glaring UI inconsistency in the Clock app:

In "Alarm", the Snooze button is big and centre while the Stop button is small and at the bottom; but in "Timer", it is reversed - the Snooze button is small and at the bottom while the Stop button is big and centre.

The issue with this is, I every time I use the timer, I end up hitting Snooze instead of Stop because I am so used to the Alarm where the Stop button is at the bottom.

Cheers

RIP Rutger Hauer

Rutger Hauer, ‘Blade Runner’ Co-Star, Dies at 75

Rutger Hauer, the versatile Dutch leading man of the ’70s who went on star in the 1982 “Blade Runner” as Roy Batty, died July 19 at his home in the Netherlands after a short illness. He was 75.

Hauer’s agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the news and said that Hauer’s funeral was held Wednesday.

His most cherished performance came in a film that was a resounding flop on its original release. In 1982, he portrayed the murderous yet soulful Roy Batty, leader of a gang of outlaw replicants, opposite Harrison Ford in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir opus “Blade Runner.” The picture became a widely influential cult favorite, and Batty proved to be Hauer’s most indelible role.

More recently, he appeared in a pair of 2005 films: as Cardinal Roark in “Sin City,” and as the corporate villain who Bruce Wayne discovers is running the Wayne Corp. in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins.”

New iPad Pro 11 inch, colour me disappointed

The screen on my iPad Pro was gritty and the Apple Pencil didn’t glide smoothly so thinking I had damaged it, I did the sensible (😈😈😈) thing and bought a new one and a new Apple Pencil.

I’m disappointed.

A) the only way to charge the pencil is to attach it to the iPad magnetically. The old pencil charged via a lightning connector so I could plug it in, grab a dumb stylus and keep going. I hold the iPad in my hand while using it and I can see myself bumping the pencil off there and losing it in a couch cushion.

B) I can’t find a way to “swipe to home” using the Apple Pencil so I awkwardly hold the pencil while swiping with my finger. Swipe to home works with a dumb stylus. Makes no sense to me.

C) the screen seems gritty and the pencil doesn’t glide. It’s as bad as the old one.

D) I don’t like the camera bump. It seems like they went so far and then said “that’s good enough”.

And, the sales dude cleaned the screen with a cloth and some Muc-Off so I bought some and used it on the old iPad. It seems to have smoothed out the gritty feel.

kernel panic on old Dual G4

I have been slowly trying to get things in order to edit, or at least get video from old DV tapes I have from various trips and family functions. Going to be borrowing a DV camera from a friend and needed a computer with FireWire. I have 2 old Dual G4's in my basement, I lugged them up to my home office and plugged the first one in. It booted up surprisingly quick. Has a whopping 2 gigs of RAM! and 4 Hard drives which should be perfect once I clear them all to store a bunch of video files. Out of curiosity I tried the second one. This one just gives me a beep when it tries to start up and that is where it ends. I was not too concerned as the other one worked. I booted the other one up again to see what I had on there. Had to go out for a bit and left it on. Came back to a black screen, assumed it was asleep. No keyboard commands or mouse clicks would wake it so I was forced to do a hard reset by pulling the power plug.

Since then it does not boot up, I get the Apple logo and then a kernel panic. It is all gibberish to me, have attached a picture of it. What should I be looking for to get this thing booting again properly? It has been sitting unplugged for well over 10 years if not more. Not sure what OS it has loaded but don't think that matters much at this state.

SunJoe Electric Pressure Washer

Whether for your house, driveway, car, truck, or ATV, there is value in having a good pressure washer. This 2,000 PSI unit is currently 36 percent off, meaning it will cost you less than $100.

Garmin vívoactive 3, GPS Smartwatch with Contactless Payments

Adventure seekers and city dwellers alike can benefit from the perks built in to the Garmin vivoactive 3 smartwatch/fitness tracker, and at $149.99 this is one of those rare times where you can get a bargain on one.

Nearly 40 percent off a robot vacuum? Sign me up. Roomba has changed how people look at day-to-day housekeeping, and they are another item that is rarely on sale.

Memory Foam Bean Bag Chair

I mean, why not? Supremely comfortable, and very affordable when the sticker price is knocked down by 67 percent.

Citizen Wristwatch

Looking for a watch that is both cheap and reliable? Citizen Watches tackles that category well, and this casual field watch of theirs is a solid choice for something you can wear while taking care of tasks around the house, or heading out into the woods, or just about anything else that doesn't involve getting all fancy. It is an easy recommendation at $56.99.

For Sale 27" iMac Mid 2011 Fixer Upper

I'm selling my home computer after a recent upgrade. This mid 2011 27" iMac was custom ordered with a 3.4 GHz Core i7 processor, and has the AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics card (1024 MB), as well as a 1 T HD and 16 GB of memory (4 X 4 GB). I even have the original packaging! This is the version of iMacs that still had the slot loading CD/DVD as well as memory card slot. It's only had light use as a home computer and is in perfect physical condition. However, while it boots up and works fine for casual use, over the past couple months the screen backlight has started to cut out during video use, so I suspect it's just a matter of refixing a heat sink with thermal paste, although it could also be a power supply. If you don't mind cracking the case it should be an easy fix and is still a very nice computer. It came with the original Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, and I'll throw in a Magic Trackpad. It's currently running a fresh install of 10.13 High Sierra. $500 OBO cash only with pick up in the GTA.

get DV tape video without camcorder?

I have a whole heap of old DV tapes from the good old days of camcorders and firewire cables. I no longer have the camcorder and want to slowly start going through a bunch of these old videos. Is there anything out there that will let me transfer these tapes without Firewire and without a camcorder? I would say I probably have around 30 - 50 DV tapes and guessing that would probably get pretty pricey using a shop that can do the conversation.

2017 MacBook Pro or 2018 MacBook Air?

I'm in the process of deciding between these two laptops that'll be purchased for business use brand new. The MacBook Pro is $1599 which is $200 off MSRP while the MacBook Air is at MSRP. My main uses will be video editing and AutoCAD, maybe some gaming.

MacBook Pro advantages:
Better Geekbench score
Better GPU
Brighter display with wide gamut

MacBook Air advantages:
Lighter
TouchID
Supposedly improved keyboard

I think I am leaning towards the MacBook Pro, the only thing that would sway me to the Air is TouchID. No, I don't have the budget to go up to a TouchID MacBook Pro.

My alternate is continuing to work on a 2009 iMac which is quite slow, sometimes annoying with AutoCAD, really annoying when trying to video edit (it's slow).

Announcing The Utter Failure Of Federal Prisons

Today it was announced that the Canadian federal prison system is a complete and utter failure. Jaysus H Christ it's a prison. No prison should have any drugs inside the walls. If that many drugs make it in, something is very wrong.

As a matter of fact, this whole 'safe injection site' bullshite is ridiculous. It is akin to taking an alcoholic to a bar at happy hour and leaving him there with $100, all at taxpayer expense. We need to start teaching school children that if you take street drugs, you WILL die. And then let them if they take drugs later in life.

Federal prison in Alberta expected to be first to open supervised drug injection site

Quote:

EDMONTON — The first supervised drug injection site in the federal corrections system is expected to open as early as the end of June at the penitentiary in Drumheller, Alta., according to the union representing federal correctional officers.

Correctional Service Canada, the government department that runs federal prisons across the country, has refused to confirm or deny whether or not the union’s statement was accurate.

“CSC received an exemption from Health Canada to permit the implementation of an overdose prevention service at Drumheller Institution,” said a statement emailed to the National Post Friday from Correctional Service Canada spokesperson Stephanie Stevenson. “Discussions and planning concerning the implementation of an overdose prevention service are ongoing.”

(Health Canada, which, the union said approves the permitting process for such facilities, said it “does not discuss the details regarding exemption applications.”)

However, Jeff Wilkins, national president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said his organization has been told it will be in place by month’s end.

The news comes as federal corrections officers planned to march through the streets of Ottawa Friday to protest the system currently in place in some prisons, a needle exchange that sees fresh needles distributed to inmates, who tend to have much higher rates of HIV and hepatitis C, to prevent needle-sharing.

“The correctional officers are dead set against the prison needle-exchange and the current way it’s being rolled out,” Wilkins told the Post in a Thursday interview, saying officers are concerned about their safety.

As it stands, inmates are given needles in their cells and it’s the responsibility of correctional officers to distribute them. Wilkins said this isn’t solving the problem of needle sharing, and that as harm reduction “is in fact a health-care issue,” a more effective program would include overdose-prevention sites staffed by health-care workers. The program at the Drumheller Institution, a medium-security prison about 130 northeast of Calgary, will be run by health-care workers “under the supervision of” correctional officers, Wilkins said.

"We recognize that drugs on occasion will make their way into our penitentiaries."
While needle exchanges in prisons have been around for a long time in other countries — Switzerland has had one since 1992 — the system in Canada is relatively new. A pilot project began in this country’s federal prison system in June 2018 at the Grand Valley Institution in Ontario and Atlantic Institution in New Brunswick. As of 2018, Correctional Service Canada estimated 1.2 per cent of inmates had HIV, a rate approaching 10 times that of the general population, where 65,000 of 37 million Canadians have HIV, according to the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research.

In January 2019, the program was expanded to four other institutions. The government said there have been no overdoses in federal prisons as a result of the exchange program.

“As with all CSC policy and program decisions, the safety and security of staff, the public and inmates are always paramount,” said an email from Stevenson. “CSC continues to have discussions with unions and staff as the program rolls out to address any concerns.” She said there have been no instances of needles being used as weapons in Canadian prisons.

Wilkins said correctional officers have found one needle in the cell of an inmate to whom it was not given, suggesting prisoners are still sharing needles. “We know that they have the ability to share the needles that are being given to them by the government.”

The drugs that will be used at the site are contraband, said Stevenson, not provided by the government

“We recognize that drugs on occasion will make their way into our penitentiaries. Recognizing this reality, we have a responsibility to safeguard the well-being of those under our care,” she wrote.

NameSync?? Safari just opened and so did this

When I booted up my computer this morning, NameSync opened and locked up my computer. Safari seemed to open too but I don't use Safari. It happened of its own accord. I had to reboot.

There's not much on the web about it though I found a confusing conversation that also included using Malwarebytes and I didn't know we could/should use it on macs.

Oh...and it also said something like this on the screen: Installation or configuration complete.

Sorry that's as precise as I can be. I was just waking up when it happened.

I'm not a techie...so this has me nervous.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I just also remembered that I did updates yesterday. I didn't see what they were. And, it was 15 minutes or so doing the updates.

Apple ID password, multiple devices, 2 Step Verification

Got a buddy who is the IT manager here at our local hospital. There are 30 iPads here and other places across the Province, all on the same Apple account. Someone attempted guessing the Apple ID password too many times. A verification code was sent to one of the 30 devices but my buddy doesn’t know which one. All are now locked out of the Apple account. What can advise my friend to do next? Call Apple? Or is there an easier way? Yes, he’s the IT specialist and should be able to resolve this, but they are just getting to know how Apple devices function in a corporate environment and he’s not too pleased with Apple at the moment. Any ideas?

Amazon rant

Again unfortunate that the 90% of users who do not log in will be unable to see this thread once it drops from the top listing.

So I have been noticing this for some time. I very occasionally buy something through Amazon.

I do however frequently search the site for price comparison or to file things away for possible future purchase. When I do so I am never logged in, and my browsers are set to toss their cookies whenever I close the browser. Still it is absolutely spooky the number of eMails I receive from Amazon promoting items I have searched and/or similar items. Only possible explanation is they key into my IP address when I do searches.

A couple of examples: I priced food scales online before buying one at the hardware store, today an eMail promoting scales. Currently looking for a small quiet fan, yesterday an email promoting the same.

Looks like I will have to see what I can do about cloaking my IP, at least when I search Amazon.

Political Correctness Careems out of Control

Too bad those who do not log in will be unable to view this, courtesy of the late March modifications to ehMac.

May the Flyers never win another Stanley Cup and may the Yankees suffer a World Series drought akin to the Chicago Cubs. Smearing the woman 33 years after her death for a satirical recording made in the 1930s is absolutely obscene. What's next? Will they be burning copies of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn because Mark Twain included a character named N!663r Jim?

https://6abc.com/sports/flyers-cover...ation/5259828/

Quote:

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers have covered the statue of Kate Smith outside the Wells Fargo Center and will stop using her recording of "God Bless America" as an allegation of racism against the singer has come to light.

The Flyers provided the following statement to 6abc Friday morning:

"We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization. As we continue to look into this serious matter, we are removing Kate Smith's recording of 'God Bless America' from our library and covering up the statue that stands outside of our arena."

Earlier this week, the New York Yankees suspended the use of Smith's recording during the seventh-inning stretch while they investigate.

The New York Daily News reported Thursday there are conflicting claims about Smith's 1939 song "That's Why Darkies Were Born." The song originated in the 1931 Broadway revue "George White's Scandals," and was considered satire. It was recorded by Smith and also by Paul Robeson, who was black.

The Alberta Political Thread

Now that Red Rachel's Reign of Error is over, Albertans can move on in a positive direction.

Canadian Conservatives Win Historic Election in Alberta

Quote:

Hillel Neuer of UN Watch, a Geneva-based watchdog group, praised Kenney's record. Neuer thanked him for his part in the "struggle against tyranny, racism and antisemitism at the UN."

Others praised him for his tax policy. Americans for Tax Reform celebrated Kenney's election as the death of any Albertan carbon tax. In a statement, the group praised the results as "the latest in a long line of defeats for carbon tax pushing politicians around the world." Kenney's opponent, Notley, had supported the carbon tax, before walking back her stance in the days before the election.

Scott Hennig, president and CEO of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said in a statement that Kenney's energy and tax policy had made a difference. "From its very introduction, the carbon tax has been very unpopular in Alberta," he said. "Kenney recognized this, and committed that Bill 1 would be to scrap the carbon tax. Clearly, it has been a big vote-getter for his party."
