Numbers, absolute copy

When in a date column I often need to copy the existing date down into a group of fields below. However, if I drag down on the selection handle, Numbers automatically adds a value of one to each date, creating a series. I've tried every modifier key I can think of but Numbers appears to always assume an absolute value copy is never intended. Numbers Help is no help at all on this one.
