which Mac system to buy?

I need a system for the following. I'm leaning towards a Mini and iPad for when I need portability. My main system would need to handle:

• hold at least 175GB music (ie. MP3, MP4s) via iTunes


• Lightroom 5


• watch DVDs or Netflix


• MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel (basic use)


• internet (no gaming)

I already have a large screen monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse.



I've heard the Macbook Pro will be gone or at least replaced by something sleeker mid-2014 or so.



Friends have told me to get an Air because everything will be in the cloud. But my music is not and will probably not be as I buy actual CDs. I don't fully understand how Flash memory works...



So my concerns are:

1. If I want portability for MS Word, could I use an app on iPad and not need a laptop?


2. Should I wait until a new and improved Macbook Pro in 2014?


3. Since I have the monitor, keyboard/mouse, should I buy a Mac Mini for a more powerful machine that can hold all of my music? And if so, when is the update coming as it's been coming for a few months and still no word?

Curious what to buy next (I'm using a circa 2008 black Macbook OSX 10.6.8 now, ha!). I want my next machine to last me 6 years!
