Alternatives to Skype?

What do members recommend as an alternative to Skype? Please bear in mind video as well as audio and, of course, security and privacy when making suggestions.

The reason for the request is that our Skype video ceased working last year. Audio still works. This problem was mentioned elsewhere online and on a thread here last year: Skype video not working now Apparently this was done as a deliberate act by Microsoft, who own Skype. We use Skype v 2.8.0.866 on our iMac. This version has been entirely satisfactory up until late last year, working for us between North America, Europe and Africa. We did not upgrade because 2.8.0.866 reliably did everything we needed.

There's an old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" As 2.8.0.866 was so reliable the reason for MS sabotaging it has nothing to do with improving reliability. There was no need for an update to improve service. Perhaps there is another reason for trying to impose upgrades on users. One of the complaints from snoops was that it was difficult (but not impossible) to monitor Skype calls because the packets travel over different routes. In view of the Snowden exposures and the confirmation that companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple knew of and participated in NSA/GCHQ Internet spying: US tech giants knew of NSA data collection, agency's top lawyer insists | World news | theguardian.com perhaps this deliberate sabotage of a good version was done to try and force users to use a replacement version that is compromised with backdoors for snoops.

By the way, how many actually believe that this: Apple rushes to fix glaring security flaw: 'As bad as you could imagine' - The Globe and Mail was an oversight by all those massively talented people at Apple?

Back to the question: what is a good replacement for Skype?
