how to open VLC player on iPad Air

I am trying a workaround to getting stuck on an airplane, having rented a movie from iTunes and it not playing. I was told to play it through VLC player, however I uploaded it but can't open it, and gives me a message saying that I don't have an application to enable it to open.



Does anyone have any idea how to get the VLC player to work on an iPad Air?
