slower memory module in iMac..

Before selling a 20" (or maybe 21.5") iMac a couple of years ago I swapped the 2x 2gb modules from it with the 2 x 1Gb modules that were in my 2008 24" iMac, not realizing that the former were 667mGhz instead of the 800 mghz that the 24" iMac was using.

Never had much to complain about as far as speed although I do get quite a bit of beach-balling at times, and then when my son tried to do some video editing he said the Imac wasn't up to it and had to use another machine instead. Looking to upgrade the Imac a bit that's when I realized I had the slower ram modules in there.

I'm wondering how much faster my Mac would run with the 800Mghz modules compared to 667 mghz?

Mailboxes into Yosemite Mail

Just did a Clean Install of Yosemite. Fired up Mail and entered my 2 accounts. Quite Mail and copied over all my local Mailboxes where they should be and also the apple.mail.plist file. All my local Mailboxes are showing but there are no messages in any box. Any ideas what has happened here? A Get Info on the Mailboxes folder is showing 1.5GB.

strange network behaviour in Yosemite

So I upgraded a few computers in our office to Yosemite. I had done some testing and had no issues on my rMBP so moved to install on a few others that could benefit from a few new features. There is a strange issue now, looking at computers under my shared. This shows all the computers in out network. Now it is showing multiples of the same computer over and over again.

Any idea what is causing this and how I can fix this? The "Reception's Mac Mini" is all the same computer, same for the blurred out one. I can connect to these computers still, just have to find the right one.

PSA: If you have a quad core mini, sell it now

Hey guys,

If you have a quad core Mac Mini 2012, just letting you know that now is a great time to sell.

With the new Mini coming out and being comparatively underpowered (theoretically, if not in actual use), people are paying exorbitant sums.

I used my loaded 2.6 Ghz Quad/16GB/SSD mini for two years, and just now sold it for more than I paid for it!

If you're looking to get a 5K retina iMac, or that new iPad Air, or maybe a refurb Mac pro, no time like the present to unload your old gear!

Crash Test Dummies: Now Fatter!

Overweight crash test dummies being developed in response to rising obesity levels in the United States

Humanetics is a Plymouth, Michigan-based company that has been developing crash test dummies since the 1950s. But the image and model of a crash test dummy hasn't changed much throughout those decades, so now Humanetics is developing a heftier crash test dummy to better represent growing obesity trends in the U.S.

"Obese people are 78 percent more likely to die in a crash," Humanetics CEO Chris O' Connor told CNN. "The reason is the way we get fat. We get fat in our middle range. And we get out of position in a typical seat."

Humanetics' obese dummy will weigh in at 273 pounds with a body mass index of 35. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute classifies obesity as those with a body mass index of 30. According to the CDC, over one-third of Americans are obese.

Anyone have Carplay yet?

I love the idea of CarPlay and was wondering if anyone had it in their car yet? There are a few aftermarket stereos from Pioneer and Alpine that support this. I think the only car to actually have it stock is a Ferrari. Interested in peoples thoughts who do have it. Will there need to be an app store or a specific section for CarPlay apps? Or will it come down to developers making their app work with CarPlay?

Mac Mail resizing photo files.

OS 10.6.8

Asked by a client to email a photo. As I've done hundreds of times in the past, I crop the photo in Photoshop (in this case, 3"x4.5"@300ppi), save as a quality 10 jpg to the desktop. Check the file size through Get Info, 430KB. Fine.

Drag & drop the image into an email, hit send, done, right? Wrong.

Client emails back & notes that they need a high res version of the image. I start checking on my end, the image file after it's dragged into Mail is shown to be 20KB. Huh? Try sending as an attachment, same 20KB size. Drag the image from the sent email back to the desktop, check dimensions in Photoshop, it's been resized! 3"x4.5"@72ppi.

WTF?

No preferences changed in Mail, nothing that I haven't done hundreds of times in the past.

Just as an experiment, I saved the file as a tif to the desktop, dragged it into a new email, then dragged it back to the desktop. No change in filesize. So, whatever is happening is only happening to jpg's. Unfortunately, the client needs the image as a jpg.

TIA

Lacie drives..

I have some Lacie external hard drives, one of which is USB3 only, but my Imac only has FW 800/400 and USB2 ports. I also have a Voyager hard drive dock with FW800, so I thought I'd take the drive out of the Lacie and use it with the dock (FW being faster than USB2) but it turns out the drive will only be read (I already have quite a bit of data on it) if it's in the Lacie enclosure it was initialized in. I even swapped it into another Lacie enclosure that has FW 800 ports but it doesn't get recognized.

That means that if the enclosure packs up, that hard drive can't be read except maybe by a data rescue program??

I seems to recall a thread somewhere about this, maybe about Drobo.

If that's the case, that would be a b*tch to deal with (recovering data/backup) if the enclosure packs up..

I have 800Gbs of data on that drive and thinking I'll stick it back in the Lacie, find a 1TB drive to transfer the data to then take the drive out and put in into my HD dock and reformat it so I don't have to deal with proprietary drive management programs...

Custom calendar app (with PDF output)?

I don't have time to go sorting through the gazillion online calendar apps out there to the find the one we need - hoping someone has the answer on the tip of their tongue.

A friend wants to build a custom calendar - a typical wall calendar with photos on top, calendar on bottom, ability to customize extensively

I first thought of iPhoto, since it has a decent bunch of templates and it's dead-simple, but then we come to the limitation of the software and most of the others I've found in a cursory Google search... you can't output to PDF and take it to to a local print shop. All the web calendar builders and apps are tied in to a printing service.

I may be wrong, but I thought that there used to be a way to get the PDF output from iPhoto... just tried it, and it's treating the photo (top) and calendar (bottom) as separate pages.

Anyone have any brilliant ideas? :)

TIA

turn off iPad backups and transferring apps?

Whenever I go to transfer a movie to my retina iPad mini, I plug into my MacBook Pro and open iTunes. I do not store these videos in iTunes, these are videos I transfer for one time use basically so I just drag and drop onto my iPad (currently using latest version of iTunes in Yosemite). I do not do this often, so maybe this is the problem, but it always starts backing up and transferring apps. I do not care about the backup and would prefer to initiate that manually. Same goes for the apps, I do not want them on my computer as well, but it starts this SLOW process whenever I try and add a video to my iPad. Is there a way by default to turn this annoying feature off? All of this is in iOS 8.1

Upgrading RAM in my 27" iMac, Late 2009

Hey All,

Quick question about RAM.

My 27" iMac is crawling since upgrading last year to Maverick.

I only have 4 gb of RAM and am thinking I need to upgrade.

Right now my iMac came with 4GB of RAM which is taking up 2 slots leaving me 2 slots free.

According to apple I can only handle 16 gb of RAM.

If I buy two 4gb "sticks" of RAM that will only add up to 12GB

Can I buy two 8gb "sticks which will total 20gb? just so I can max out the 16gb or will that destroy my computer!?

Am I able to remove the 2 ram's that currently came with my iMac or should I leave those in?

Also, I was looking at crucial.com as I heard good thing about them, but open to alternatives.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Question about newer iMacs.

I'm thinking of upgrading from a 2008 24" Core 2 Duo to something a bit more modern. For those of you who own the newer versions that are difficult to upgrade the memory, or change the HD, have you had any issues where the drive failed and had to be replaced or found that you just had to upgrade the drive or memory, did you do it yourself (following Fixit instructions)?

If so, any problems?

Downloading Yosemite from Apple.

I have fairly fast Rogers cable internet. I've tested my speeds with speediest.net.. I have on average 30mbps download and 5 mbps upload.

I can't for the life of me figure out why downloading Yosemite takes so long... aprox 12 hours...

The first time I downloaded it was Thursday/Friday... I wanted to upgrade and see if I liked it....

I'm more or less fine with it on my 17" MBP (Early 2010 model)... so now I need to re-download the file and complete a fresh install...

Unfortunately when you install Yosemite through the app store it self deletes... hence the reason for re-downloading... I just can't figure out why it takes so long to download 5 gigs from the App store...

Am I crazy? Anyone have any suggestions?

MBP (2013) unable to resize windows

I just got a refurbished MBP (2013). Came with Mavericks, spent a lot of time downloading updates etc. including Yosemite. I think the problem was there in Mavericks, but because I was doing other stuff, I did not pay enough attention. Now Yosemite is installed. I have a 2008 MBP and do not have any trouble like that. I had one suggestion in Apple Support communities to untick the boxes in trackpad setup, but that did not work. Any suggestions please?

Mavericks Question

I upgraded to Mavericks a couple of weeks ago. I had a power failure and the power was off for about 20 minutes. When I went to restart my iMac, I was somewhat surprised to find that it had automatically restarted. I thought that, when I had installed Mavericks, that the box “start up automatically after a power failure” in Energy Saver had, somehow, been checked when I did the upgrade. I verified that it was still unchecked. So, I’m wondering how the computer could restart without the box being checked. Anyone have any idea how it could happen?

Wi-Fi or iPad 1 problem?

We have a first generation Wi-Fi iPad, (32GB, 24GB available) on 5.1.1. We use it mainly for surfing the net and reading e-mails. When we are reading a Web page (eg. local paper) it will just go back to the desk top. You can always just open Safari again and go back to the Web page you were on or another one. Never does it on ehMac, or any of the other forums I use. Local paper and Facebook seem to be the worst. Seems to be doing this more and more lately. Could it just be the age of the iPad? I am just looking for possible actions to stop this from happening. Our iPhones, eReaders, and iMac never have Wi-Fi issues.

Apple watch, will it work "loose"

I like to wear my watches on the looser side, a tight watch really bugs me.

But the apple watch has an optical HR sensor... so logically, if its not pressed against skin, can't get a reading.

Mail issue and printing in Yosemite

So I can repeat this problem on two computers, one a rMBP and the other a c2d Mac Mini, both running Yosemite with all the updates available. It seems that if there is an email attachment, a visible one, it prints 2 pages. The first page it prints just the sender and subject line:

And then the second page it prints the body of the email:

It only happens if the attached file is visible, like a pdf or a jpeg. If for example there is an excel file, it prints normal because it is not printing an image of the excel file. The settings are set to fit to page. If I flip the page to landscape it fits in like normal... except in landscape mode.

He has 4 gigs of ram. He is finding he is getting the beach ball a fair big when running word and other light use things on his computer. Main uses are Microsoft Office, Mail, iTunes and Safari (youtube videos regular websites).

Initially another friend who was helping him was suggesting to upgrade the RAM. I think that is a good idea, 4 gigs is just not enough anymore in my opinion. But I was wondering if an SSD would be more of a noticeable difference. I know how it improved things on an old Mac Mini c2d. What is the better buy when you can only do 1? Will RAM make that much of a difference, or will SSD be what really helps?

Operating problems after liquid spilled on MacBook Pro keyboard

Hi....after handling my MacBook Pro with kid gloves since I've owned it (3 years) - disaster has struck :-( Some liquid spilled on the keyboard, which I dried as completely as possible.

I do have some functionality, but the trackpad isn't working normally and I can't type anything with the keyboard.

I have installed an Apple keyboard to get around the typing issue.

I've also installed a mouse, but get the same quirky problems as the trackpad (e.g. can't use double-click, only "open" for documents, screens, very hard to select text - drop down menus keep opening, etc.)

It's holding (so far) a 96% charge with the power source attached (showing as "fully" charged), but it seems to go into sleep mode if I leave it open, but unused for about 10 minutes, and I have to restart it.

Have I ruined my laptop, or might it be possible to get the damage fixed?

Mac OS-X 10.8.6

Yosemite install just... disappeared.

Hi everyone,

I was updating to Yosemite today on my early 2009 iMac, and the download in the App Store moved to the install phase, and then I seem to recall a message pop up and disappear indicating the install as progressing, and then... nothing. Has anyone experienced this?

Re-downloading now, as the App Store didn't recognize that it was already downloaded after it rebooted. The download is also much quicker right now than this morning.

iCloud Keychain stuck

Hi Folks,

I just upgraded my 13" mid 2012 MacBook Air to Yosemite and my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.1. For the most part everything works better. Continuity works great with phone calls and receiving SMS messages from my Android friends on my mac.

Keychain won't activate for me. Normally when I do anything iCloud related I instantly get prompted on the other device to verify. But when I put a check in the box beside Keychain in iCloud settings in either my Mac or iPhone, I don't get prompted from the other device to authenticate. It just stays in limbo land saying "waiting for approval from other devices". There is an option to use code and then receive an SMS with a 6 digit code. I tried that and I do receive the code. I enter the code and it looks like it's trying to work but then goes back to saying "waiting for approval from other devices".

Attachment 50209

It just a pain as I've been using the feature to auto generate crazy passwords for new sites and relying on keychain to remember them. I even tried to do a clean install of both iOS and Yosemite but it's an iCloud issue.

I have a case for this issue with Apple and they're working on it supposedly. Just wanted to see if any fresh minds had input or to see if this is happening to anyone else.

Cheers!

Need help installing Linux Mint on Core Duo White MacBook

I have a very old White MacBook Core Duo 1.83 with 2 Gigs RAM and 500 Gigs HDD, currently maxed out at Snow Leopard. I want to install Linux Mint on it.

I downloaded Linux Mint iso, but since I don't have any DC-Rs or DVD-Rs, I tried finding ways to make an external 1 TB USB HDD a bootable Linux drive.

After a long search I finally found a software to do just that.

I did all of the above in my 2014 iMac running Yosemite.

Now, I plug in the USB drive to my White MacBook, hit Restart with the Option key pressed. I do see the external USB drive in the available boot drives, I select it.

The screen goes White for a very long time, then I get the folder icon with the question mark inside of it; and then I get the Apple logo and the system boots back into Snow Leopard.

So, what I would like to know is:

  1. Is a 1 TB external drive too much for the ancient Core Duo MacBook to boot from?

  2. Was there something wrong in creating the "bootable" USB drive, meaning, is it not actually bootable?

  3. Am I trying something that's not possible?

Yeah, I know I can buy a DVD-R disc and burn the ISO image onto that and make that bootable, but that's my last resort since I have to drive a bit to buy DVD-Rs.

Thanks and cheers

A tale of two minis: 2.0GHZ C2D VS. 1.6g GHZ CD

Two minis. The 2.0 GHZ one I just upgraded seems a tad slower than the 1.66 and I have no clue why!

Mini #1:

- Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHZ

- 2 gig of RAM

- 10.6.8.

Mini #2:

- Intel Core Duo, 1.66 GHZ

- 1 gig of RAM

- 10.6.8.

Is it possible that the issue is with the hard drives? Both are 60 gigs, but one is a Samsung and the other is a Toshiba.

iPhone 5S no data?

My mom has a 2 month old iPhone 5S. She has a data plan, has had one for a few years now. Everything was working fine till last week when she asked why should could google search without wifi like she used to be able to. I checked and sure enough, it would not connect, even though it should LTE and the cell signal was strong (Rogers). She was running iOS 7. I did the update to 8.1 yesterday hoping it was a software glitch and that it would get resolved. No luck there either. I took my sim card from my 6 Plus and put it in to see if it was possibly associated with her account, and still no data connected.

Now I am thinking this is a hardware issue and to go to Apple, but I thought I would just check here first if there is something I am missing? Cellular data is turned on in settings.

USB3 thumb drive slow down?

So I have a Verbatim USB3 32 gig thumb drive. It was great, super fast. Today I tried to put on the installer for Yosemite to transfer to computers throughout the office to save the download time on each computer. The problem I got was it said it was to big for the volume, or something like that. I have 22 gigs free. So googling I found out that the formatting for the thumb drive was MS-DOS and that it had limitations to file size. Googling again let me to reformat the thumb drive to exFat. Now it is MUCH slower then before. It transferred about the same speed as a mac mini c2d which is using USB2.

I do want to have functionality for both windows and mac. Is there a format that it needs to be in for USB 3 speeds?

Something else I just noticed that is peculiar when I went back into disk utilities to look at the thumb drive. Under the main heading you see it is MS-DOST (FAT) but under the name I gave my USB drive it shows it as ExFat.

What should I be doing here to keep USB 3 speeds? Or could the drive itself be defective?

mail drop question

So I love the idea of mail drop, no more needing to use drop box or other services to send larger files to our clients (graphic proofs). My question is does the Mac its being sent from need to have an iCloud email set up at all? I have an iCloud account for work, but the email is not used on it, I basically use it for connecting to all our macs from anywhere for screen sharing and file sharing. I do not want the email account on these computers or for it to be accidentally used. So, can mail use mail drop without an iCloud email account in mail?

Security issue with Yosemite?

I was on the phone with AppleCare for Spotlight not showing any results from Wikipedia or Bing; and while I was on the phone, I discovered a new problem which I think is a security issue. I am providing the details below:

I created a new test user account to see if Spotlight works properly there. It didn’t, and I was told by AppleCare that this was a known issue and is not working for anyone now; and that we have to wait for a dot release to fix this.

To come back to the security issue:

While in that new user account (a standard non-admin account), I ran Spotlight and noticed that it was providing me with results (files, email messages, etc.) from my main Admin-user account. I was surprised at this since I presumed that one user account should never be able to see files belonging to another user account.

Just to see how far I could go, I tried to open some of the files Spotlight showed me. I opened a movie file (I could play it), I opened a spreadsheet (I could see everything in it and I could also make changes); I opened PDFs and was able to read them.

As a final test, I opened Finder - I was able to navigate to the privileged user’s folder and sub-folder structure and open all the files and read them and make changes.

I also transferred a file from the standard test user account to the privileged admin user account’s folder!

I did a Get Info on the privileged user’s folder and I could read-write to that folder.

And now comes the zinger:

I switched to the privileged user-account and opened Finder and navigated to the test user folder. I could see Red Minus signs all over the place and I could not navigate any further down.

So, it looks like it is working bass-ackwards! A non-privileged user can do anything with a privileged user’s stuff and the privileged user can do nothing with a non-privileged user’s stuff.

Luckily I discovered this issue while on the call with AppleCare - a senior support person actually; and he sent me the data-gathering software where I run the software and replicate the issue so that all logs are collected and sent to Apple.

Let’s see if this goes anywhere.

And in the meanwhile, can some of you see if you face the same problem please?

Now, regarding the original Spotlight problem I called Apple about - I cannot see any Wikipedia or Bing or Movie theatre info - I can only see local hard drive stuff. The tech told me that the web-search portion of Spotlight is not working properly yet and that I have to wait for Apple to release a patch, a dot release; and that this issue is so low on the totem with other major issues so that this issue may be addressed only after a long time.

Cheers

Eno shed further light on the composition of the sound on the BBC Radio 4 show The Museum of Curiosity, admitting that he created it using a Macintosh computer, and stating "I wrote it on a Mac. I've never used a PC in my life; I don't like them."[33]

Ventir, new keylogger malware on the loose!

Last Thursday, Kaspersky labs discovered Ventir, very persistent keylogger malware for Mac OSX.

According to "The Safe Mac" it does not even need root access to infect your Mac!

Once infected, it isn't even enough to remove the offensive files. All you can do is a nuke-n-pave, manual reinstall of apps and preferences and retrieval of data only.

Because it is so new, Ventir is not yet blocked by XProtect.

So beware!

DAC and which Apple device for iTunes?

I'm planning on buying a DAC for my audio system so my digital content sounds better. It requires a device which holds my music (eg. laptop, iPod, etc) to be directly connected to it. All of this would sit near my integrated amplifier, all connected.

The issue I have is my computer doesn't and won't sit near my amp, so I have to figure out which device to use to connect it. I have 165GB of music on iTunes. iPods are too small (max capacity 64GB). My 2008 black Macbook is aging but still working.

So my thought is: continue using my black Macbook, plugged into the DAC but for nothing else besides music.

The concerns are:

-will this system (OS10.6.8) get outdated where I can't use it any longer?

-should I update to a more recent OS even though everyone says it'll make it run slower?

-is there an alternative to using an iPod (too small) or my Macbook (too old)???

Iraq: Weapons of Mass Destruction found! (but, uh, never mind...)

Iraq's 'hidden' chemical weapons: US 'covered up' discovery of chemical weapons after 2003 invasion – and many are now in Isis’s hands

The US military has reportedly covered up the discovery of huge numbers of chemical weapons in Iraq – stocks which now lie in the occupied lands controlled by Isis.

* * * *

The details of Iraq’s chemical weapons stores have only emerged now from Iraqi and US officials, redacted intelligence documents and interviews with soldiers because, the paper claimed, because of potential embarrassment for the government.

* * * *

President George W Bush led the US into war in Iraq on the back of assertions that Saddam Hussein had recently-built weapons of mass destruction, supplies that had only increased in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Yet all the chemical weapons found by soldiers were manufactured before 1991, the Times reported.

* * * *

the reports were embarrassing for the Pentagon because, in five of the six incidents in which troops were wounded by chemical agents, the munitions appeared to have been “designed in the US, manufactured in Europe and filled in chemical agent production lines built in Iraq by Western companies”.

RAVPower wireless filehub (?)

I ran across this gadget:

It seems too good to be true at a low price.

Has anybody tried it ... or something similar?

It'd be great to add memory to an iPad with videos, photos, documents, etc. etc.

We're going on a looong plane flight and the opportunity for my wife & I to watch (different) movies stored on a USB flash drive would be great!!

Do multiple users cause file duplication on a Mac?

I have a large number of duplicate files. I had to add a second user when I did my last mac OS upgrade. Now I seem to have many duplicate files, one copy associated with each user.

What's up with WHOIS?

Not sure if I'm just being dense or if something has gone wrong on the internet!

What the heck is up with WHOIS?

A domain name for an NGO I work with expired because the guy who was supposed to be paying the bills kept deleting the emails about the impending expiry, thinking they were spam. Sigh.

So somebody (?) grabbed it (it was/is registered with GoDaddy) and threw up a one-page placeholder about taxes - no contact info, etc., nor any sort of "buy this domain" info. Odd.

Anyway - I'm trying to find out who the current owner of the site is to see if we can get it back for less than a gazillion dollars. But WHOIS no longer gives me the registrant record...

updated: Ok. I think I see what's going on here. The registrant record is set to private. Meanwhile, the same registrant (GoDaddy) is itself selling a "make a certified offer to the current owner", charging $70 + commission to serve as a go-between as you try to get the domain back (that's on top of whatever you offer the current owner). That's a little bit dirty.

They're presenting the domain as being owned by a third party, when they themselves (probably?) have simply repossessed it, and are essentially holding it for ransom.

Jerks. Unless I'm misinterpreting the situation?

do you buy iCloud storage?

I'm a pretty light iPhone user and have now faced the message from Apple stating that I'm almost out of my 5GB iCloud storage.

Do you really need to pay for storage or can I get around this?

If I sync/backup my iPhone with iTunes regularly, do I really need iCloud???

Time machine question

I recently helped my Uncle and Aunt purchase a refurb macbook pro to replace a dead iMac G5. They have been making CD's of their pictures as back ups. Not the most efficient backup solution, but it is a back up at least. I have convinced them of the benefits of an external hard drive for a time machine back up. They are using an airport express for their wifi (model that plugs directly into the wall socket). Now my question is can I directly plug in the hard drive to their macbook pro for the first initial backup and then plug that drive into the airport express for over the air time machine backups?

Best iPad 2/3 Arm?

I'm looking for an arm to attach to a side table to bed able to use an iPad 3. Ideally I'd like it to be able to stretch up to 3 feet or so, and swivel between horizontal and vertical positions. I am leaning toward the snake clamp, but have only really found that and the spider arm, and am wondering if there is a product out there that you have used and like... and why?

iPhone 5 still not sycing w iTunes!

I can add artists when syncing but the artists I've removed from my iTunes library still exist on my iPhone!

Another weird thing happened where I tried syncing new artists and my storage ran up in the Other category and maxed out my total storage. I can't possibly have 20GB of Other when my last sync was 1.83GB!

This is so frustrating! Is it because I'm using an old system, black Macbook, OS10.6.8 that it's not syncing properly?

Now I'm in the process of restoring my phone so I can get music back on it, and get rid of this 20GB of Other.

Minor annoyance with Safari bookmarks ios7

Within my bookmarks, I have several folders. One of the folders holds 8 different bookmarks, which are all visible when the folder first opens, along with blank spaces to fill the rest of the column. When I open one of those bookmarks, and then return to the folder, the folder shows only the first 7 bookmarks. I have to scroll down to see the 8th bookmark. This happens every time I access that folder after first opening one bookmark. And this is the only folder that behaves this way. (Apologies for making this sound more complicated than it probably is.)

Any suggestions on how to make the entire contents of the folder visible whenever I access it?

iMac - Mid 2007 "Screen Freeze"

Okay... This has been happening for a long time, just finally getting fed up with it and going to ask about it.

First off this was a new to me computer about 6-8 months ago.

20" Mid 2007 iMac. 2 GHZ C2D 4GB Ram.

ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB Ram Video

Long part of the story.... When i got my hands on it my friend had never really done much with it other then upgrade the ram, It was still running Tiger or Leopard (whatever the base install came with). So i proceeded to wipe the drive and do a fresh restore from the restore discs. Then upgraded to Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks (10.9.5).

Every now and the screen will "Freeze" and i will have to do a hard shutdown (holding power until it turns off). I can move the mouse pointer around the screen But that's it. A folder will be half open or the Dock will half zoomed. It's like the video gets "stuck" trying to do something and never comes back. Literally the only action i can do i move the mouse and power the unit off manually.

At first i thought this was because i had it hooked up a second monitor.

Removed that from the equation and the problem went away for a while, but not permanently.

When this was happening with ML i was hoping the upgrade to mavericks would fix it if it were a video driver issue, nope.

Tried resetting PRAM, SMC, physically reseating the RAM.

I noticed a while back it was happening often when coming out of sleep mode, disabled that as well.

I am using this as my "Media Centre"/home office desktop so it doesn't get shut down often. When it does it seems it will freeze unless i leave it for about an hour after reboot.

Anyone have any thoughts, Seen this before?

My fear is it's an issue with the Video Card or Logic Board.

iPhoto Slide Show "improvements"

Have not done any iPhoto slideshows since switching to the pro.

I am running Snow Leopard and iPhoto 9.2.3.

I have noticed a big change from earlier versions. It seems that transitions are now the same for every slide. I can change them at will but it applies to the entire slide show. Ditto Ken Burns can be either on or off but not selected on a slide x slide basis. Not sure if the KB zoom ratio can still be adjusted on individual slides.

Am I missing something or was iPhoto idiotified as part of the effort to blend OSX and the iPhone OSs?

App Store won't update

iPhone 4S running iOS 7.0.6, suddenly the App Store stopped allowing me to download updates. I can download new apps fine but when I go to update existing apps and click the update button instead of updating it just opens that's app. Also the update all button is greyed out. I tried to delete all of the apps that won't update so my phone would show no updates but that didn't solve the issue? Any ideas? Don't really want to go to iOS 8 for a variety of reasons.

Purchases for a new school!

HI all,

Been a while (too long!) since I've posted here, but I am at a brand new school and have $$ to spend on tech! Those in the education business, have insight into what children should be equipped with and others: what technology do you believe needs to be in the hands of kids and teachers now?

iPads?

Android devices?

Laptops?

ChromeBooks?

PC desktops?

Mac computers?

After speaking with people who are in the education software business in North America, they've offered these thoughts:

- iPads won't last in education. They honestly believe the larger the device the deeper the answer. There's a blog post somewhere, which I will find and share with you all soon. Web 2.0 is the way to go and not apps.

- they think we'll see iPads in primary classrooms and Special Education, but for in-depth work, not so much. You could argue, just like kids will surf with the netbooks, they'll play with the iPad. There are exceptions to this point of view, of course.

- they'd suggest we grab Google Chromebooks before iPads. Cheaper, more universal in application. That being said they would advise against buying the Windows tablet. It is improved, but MS hasn't worked out all the kinks yet.

- they advise against going the computer desktop route, unless they were an amazing price. The machines don't do more than laptops and unless we're a school of gamers - they don't see many people buying them anymore.

Thoughts?

We have a BYOD policy in our school board.
