Adapters to connect 2007 MacBook Pro to Thunderbolt Display??

I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro with a broken display. I would like to connect it to a Thunderbolt Display that I have. The MacBook has a DVI Port and I can use a DVI to VGA adapter to connect it to a VGA monitor. When i use the Display with a newer MacBook Pro I just plug the cord with the Thunderbolt symbol into the Thunderbolt port on my 2014 MacBook Pro. How do I get the old MacBook Pro hooked up to the Display? Thanks.

Kentucky Suicide Bomber on Christmas Day

I had heard that someone set off a bomb on Christmas Day in Kentucky, but - hey, it's the USA and nothing surprises me anymore. It registered, and I forgot about it. There wasn't much coverage that came my way on social media, etc.

Holy heck. This guy - Anthony Warner - blew up a motorhome in downtown Kentucky. :yikes:

41 Buildings suffered major damage.

Worse, it appears he was on cops' radar, but.....

Girlfriend warned Nashville police Anthony Warner was building bomb a year ago, report shows
Sixteen months before Anthony Quinn Warner's RV exploded in downtown Nashville on Christmas morning, officers visited his home in Antioch after his girlfriend reported that he was making bombs in the vehicle, according to documents obtained by The Tennessean.

On Friday, 63-year-old Warner blew up a city block, police say, about 6:30 a.m. on Second Avenue outside an AT&T switch facility. The bomb caused massive destruction to 41 downtown buildings and crippled telecommunication systems throughout the Southeast over the weekend.

In the aftermath, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Warner was "not on our radar" prior to the bombing. But a Metro Nashville Police Department report from August 2019 shows that local and federal authorities were aware of alleged threats he had made.

No actions appear to have been taken to stop Warner, a slender 5-foot-8, 135-pound man who died in the explosion, which injured three others.

On Aug. 21, 2019, the girlfriend told Nashville police that Warner "was building bombs in the RV trailer at his residence," the MNPD report states. Nashville police then forwarded the information to the FBI.

(CBC)

Police say only three people were injured, which seems surprisingly low, since - although this was a commercial district - there were apartments along that street (see the last video posted above).

Just incredible..... :(

Trillion dollar cheapskates!

I live in Thailand & have always bought my Macs directly from Apple. MBP 2015.

Battery swelled & busted the top case 10 days after AppleCare expired. Apple granted me an exception and covered it.

Just a year later, battery has swollen again & popped the bottom plate. Always seems my support calls get routed to Singapore.

Claim for exception has been denied by TWO senior advisors. Told me, after all, my Mac was five years old!

So that's the quality of Macs now?!? A year-old battery manufactured by Apple failed, and they won't cover it!

Does anybody here think kicking this upstairs somehow to Apple Corporate would overrule this decision? Or would they stick to the opinions of their senior advisors?

If anybody has had luck with this approach, I'd love to hear about it.

And if anybody has a somebody in Apple to kick this to, with contact details, I'd be grateful.

Apple is normally hard to reach for feedback. TIA!

can't open in new tab on iPad pro?

I have an iPad pro, the newer design without fingerprint reader. All updated to latest. I have noticed this for a bit but never really looked into it. In Safari I cannot open a link in a new tab. I get an option for open in a new window but not a new tab. I have the option on my iPhone, latest updates. Was this removed from the iPad OS for some reason or is it something wrong or something turned off on my iPad to not give me the option?

Saying hello again...

Hi all, it's been a long, long time! I'm not sure, but I may have last participated in the forums eight or more year's ago. Life happened, got busy with work and lost my credentials along the way. I've tried to log back in on occasion, but my requests for password resets to the Admin were never acknowledged. It wasn't until another long-time member PM'd me that I found out which email I had registered under so that I could do the "forgot my password" thing so now I'm back! :)

I will not be as active here as I was before, but I'll chime in once in awhile. After browsing a few threads, I've noticed ehMac has a different feel now... not better or worse, just different. Nice to see some of the more active posters from the past are still here. Lots of catching up and fun reading ahead!

iPadOS safari search

I’m using an 11 inch iPad Pro, iPadOS 14.2. When I tap on the safari search bar, the previous text briefly highlights and then reverts to present search meaning that I have to select all to clear the previous search. Very annoying.

It never behaved this way before I upgraded to 14.n

My iPhone XR is also at 14.n and it behaves properly.

Anybody else having this problem/know of a solution?

Facebook vs Apple on Privacy

Facebook Takes the Gloves Off in Feud With Apple
The social network said it opposed changes that Apple was making to the tracking of apps and would provide information for an antitrust complaint against the iPhone maker.

(...)

Apple is making changes that threaten Facebook’s business — and the fight has intensified. Early next year, Apple plans to start requiring iPhone owners to explicitly choose whether to allow companies to track them across different apps, a practice that Facebook relies on to target ads and charge advertisers more.

On Wednesday, Facebook went on the offensive to forestall Apple’s changes. The social network created a website that slammed Apple’s moves as potentially hurtful to small businesses. (It did not mention that the changes could hurt itself.) To reinforce its displeasure, the social network also took out full-page ads in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times to declare that it was “standing up to Apple.”

(...)

In a blog post, Dan Levy, a vice president of advertising at Facebook, said the company was taking the steps now because “we’ve heard from many of you, small businesses in particular, that you are concerned about how Apple’s changes will impact your ability to effectively reach customers and grow — let alone survive in a pandemic.” He added, “So we’re speaking up for small businesses.”

Apple executives have expected Facebook’s protests and, in recent weeks, have vowed to go forward with the planned changes.

“It’s already clear that some companies are going to do everything they can to stop the App Tracking Transparency feature,” Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, said in a speech last week. “We need the world to see those arguments for what they are: a brazen attempt to maintain the privacy-invasive status quo.”

Best Apps of the Year: MacStories

MacStories Selects 2020: Recognizing the Best Apps of the Year
The MacStories Selects Awards are our annual love letter to apps and the people who make them. Apps have become ubiquitous, seeping into every corner of our lives. They help us find a job and home, get work done, blow off steam, order a meal, and everything in between. With so many apps available in the App Store, though, it’s easy to take them and their creators for granted, which is why as the year comes to a close, we step back and pause to celebrate the MacStories Team’s favorite apps and the people who make them.

To say that bringing an app to life from idea to a fully-formed 1.0 is tough is a vast understatement, and 2020 hasn’t made the process any easier. However, as we survey the past year, the depth of innovative apps makes it clear that many developers poured themselves into their apps in 2020. The result was a list of MacStories Selects candidates that was longer than in any prior year of the awards.

Apple changed stuff in Big Sur

The space bar appeared to me to be the standard to start and stop playback in both Safari and for podcasts before Big Sur. It still is for Safari when playing YouTube videos but the space bar is no longer used for the Podcast program. Instead, they force me to use the option and space bar. :ptptptptp

Is there a way to change the playback start/stop key back to JUST the space bar?

BUYER BEWARE of STAPLES

Greetings,

Last December 28th I purchased a MacBook Air from Staples which was on sale for $979.99 plus tax. While on the Apple web site, recently, I noticed I could trade in my less than one year old MacBook Air for the latest 2021 MacBook Air. Thinking that what I had purchased last December was an "end of line" 2019 MacBook Air as the new 2020 MacBook Air were already out. My 2019 trade-in was worth $690 for a new one. As it turned out my less than one year old computer was a 2017 model and only worth $370 as a trade-in.

I complained to Staples but they said that it had not been advertised as a 2019 and my reply was that it was also NOT advertised as a 2017! I don't think Staples is fair or ethical to sell a computer that, at the time, was 3 yrs old.

The moral of this story, if that is the right word, is to inspect your purchase from Staples after your purchase, to insure you haven't purchased an old model. Upper left corner ABOUT THIS MAC. I agree I was remiss in not checking my purchase but I want to pass on this piece of advice to all the EHMAC COMMUNITY. You only have 2 weeks to return it.

CHEERS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!

SILVER BACK

p.s. Staples offered me a Staples $50 gift card "for my troubles", which I rejected.

Folder View Options Not Sticking

Sorry for the long winded post, but I want to be very clear about my predicament.

My question refers to this page.
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guid...hldaafb302/mac

Change view options in the Finder on Mac
You can customize any of the views in the Finder—Icon, List, Column, or Gallery—to suit your preferences. For example, you can change the text size of file names and, in some views, change the size of file icons.

Specifically this option.
Select Icon view options: Change the icon size, grid spacing, text size, and more.

I'm having problems with my preferences not sticking for certain folders.

This is happening on three Macs.

The problem first showed up about a year ago, maybe as recent as last January.

This started with Catalina.

I'm now using the most recent Big Sur.

I've performed general restarts, safe starts, reinstalls, all three variations of Disk utility (The app, recovery, and internet recovery), zapped the PRAM, and reset the SMC, countless times. I've even tried with a new administrator. But with the same problem happening on three Macs, I highly doubt the administrator account was corrupted the same time, on every computer.

I have made at least three postings to Apples' Support Communities since the first of the year, asking for assistance about the problem. The answers were basically not at all helpful, to being extremely vague. They came from the high level members, never from the low level members. It was as if, others weren't having the same problem as I was having, or they simply didn't care if their folder view prefs didn't stick.

I've also preformed countless web searches. I did find a few instances, but they were about ten years old. I don't recall reading anything recent, from others that are having the same problem.

I have left plenty of comments at the bottom of help page, asking for clarification as to what folders, view options aren't meant to stick.

The problem remains, or has happened, on these folders. Or perhaps they are correctly called, finder windows.

Macintosh HD (The folder that shows the folders for the Applications, Library, System, Users)

Applications folder, occasionally.

Folders within the applications folder, it used to be always, but appears to be okay for the time being. Interestingly, folders within these folders always kept my view prefs.

Utilities folder, occasionally.

Library folder, view options never stick. And neither do my viewing prefs stick with any of the folders within.

System folder, view options never stick. And neither do my viewing prefs stick with any of the folders within.

Users folder, view options never stick. And neither do they stick for the other user (Administrator), and the shared folder. My preferred view options remain intact for the folders within the shared folders. The folders within the other user (Administrator) folder also do not stick, but that my be a given.

The view options for the logged in user (Administrator) always stick, as with every other folder within.

So, what I'm asking is, are the problems that I'm having with my folder view preferences not sticking, normal or not?

If they aren't normal, what if any, are the fixes?

This site can’t be reached

I hear this is a frequent issue for people but all I can find is Windows-specific troubleshooting tips.

Basically what's happening is that every few days, seemingly randomly, my laptop stops being able to reach big sites like Google, LinkedIn, and/or Facebook (rarely more than one at a time). I get the error "This site can’t be reached."
  • This happens across multiple browsers
  • The problem is only on my MacBook Pro
  • Rebooting the computer doesn't help
  • Changing networks (I've tried my phone's hotspot) doesn't help
  • And it's usually only one website at a time. I can access the rest of the web just fine.
It spontaneously resolves after a few hours.

Any thoughts on how to fix it?

Console Crash Reports....Crash

In my updated Big Sur, I've been trying to get the crash logs of a particular app but, every time I click on Crash Reports in Console, it crashes. Clicking on all the others is fine. Old iMac for Granddaughters pictures

We have purchased a new iMac and I was wondering the best way to set up the old one (2009 24" using 10.11.6). Our son and daughter-in-law want the old mac just for photos of our granddaughter. I want to keep the existing OS X and not have to install 10.5.6 which shipped with the mac when new. Can I do this by setting up new Admin account in their name and their password and then deleting the current Admin account? That would give them access to all the installed apps but not give them access to any info already on the computer now, is this correct? Just looking for quick and easy way to get this set up for them to use without causing Grandpa a lot of stress and frustration having to deal with computer stuff. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

Trying to update 2015 MacBook Pro. Lots of aggravation.

I inherited a 2015 MacBook Pro and did a clean install. Lots of aggro there as the Internet Recovery took 4-5 attempts before I successfully installed OSX Yosemite.

Now, I'm trying to install AutoCAD and the installer does nothing. I found out it's a problem with the OS so I tried to get Catalina from the App Store. TheApp Store now insists on 2 factor authentication and tells me I need to enter the verification code. I get the verification code on my phone but there is nowhere on Yosemite to enter it. Argh.

Next, I tried to install FreeCAD. System security won't let me install because it's from an unidentified developer. But, when I click "Open Anyway", well, it just won't let me. Double Argh.

So now I'm downloading Sierra. Will the above problems go away with Sierra? Does Sierra have a facility for 2 factor authentication? And does the Security setting actually function properly?

Any comments appreciated.

Any Apple Motion users here?

It has been a few years since I have used Motion and even then it was pretty basic stuff. I am preparing something for a Christmas Festival production. Basically it is a 10 min intermission video clip that will have some slow gradual moving elements. One of the elements is a silhouette of the wisemen crossing the desert on their camels. Basically the angle works for part of the motion path but when it gets to a higher point and starts heading down the angle of the wisemen is wrong. What I want to do is at one point have the wisemen angle change to look more natural in a downslope movement. I have attached a screen shot which hopefully illustrates my issue and what I want to do.

Anyone know how to accomplish this? I thought about adding a spin to that point and thought I could get a partial spin to change the angle but just ended up with a spinning propeller of camels.

My 27" mac's OS is High Sierra 10.13.6. It is 9 years old. It will no longer update newer OS. Just recently I got the message not compatible for updates for Photoshop, Lightroom/Classic, and Bridge. The new updates need 10.14.

Is there a way to update this software or I am out of luck?

CarPlay in real life

Well, it is finally time to buy a new car. Virtually all the models I'm looking at have CarPlay but I have a couple of questions:

Does CarPlay need its own data plan (extra $$$?) or does it just use cell data from the iPhone? I use Apple Maps for directions now so I presume CarPlay won't use a tonne more data?

Does CarPlay work decently with multiple iPhones? Four of us in the family have iPhones and any of us might take the car at any given time. My current car really only allows alternating between two Bluetooth connections for entertainment and hands-free calling...which is a pain-in-the-tail at times. CarPlay must be better, right?

Any other gottcha's or other issues with CarPlay?

2015 MBP: end of life?

I use my MBP for these things:
  • Connect to external DAC via optical cable (Spotify)
  • MS Office (light use)
  • General email, web browsing
  • Backup photos and Google Drive to external drives (light use; via USB)

I got a message saying Google Drive can’t auto sync due to not having the correct OSX and I see no Software Update option in Settings so I’m guessing my MBP has reached its limit.

Questions: is it accurate that I can no longer update the OSX due to its age? Is it now time to replace it even though everything else works fine? Is there a way of updating the OSX any other way? IS THIS REALLY TIME TO SAY GOODBYE??:(

iPhone Upgrade Question(s)

Hello again,

I'm about to upgrade from my trusty iPhone 6 to an iPhone 11. I've been using the 6 for years with iOS 10.3.3 and using iTunes v. 12.6.2 to backup locally and Image Capture to download photos. My iMac is running 10.9.5.

Will iTunes and Image Capture still work with an 11? I'm really not interested in upgrading everything to accommodate a phone.

Thanks in advance!

Sleeping MBP using lots of network data

Somehow, even with "wake for network access" disabled and my remote backup software (Backblaze) paused, my computer transferred 5.8 GB overnight.

I did some preliminary reading on different hibernation modes and determined mine is in the default "safe sleep" 3.

So I guess my question is two-fold:

A. Which sleep mode should I actually be in to prevent such network activity?

B. How do I determine which apps/processes are transferring that much data overnight?

Thanks for your help!

What are you watching?

This year's covid lockdown changed folks' entertainment habits enormously... and the streaming services have certainly benefitted.

What have you all been watching this year?

Some from my list:

and I've been popping in to PeacockTV.com for a Battlestar Galactica (reboot) rewatch from time to time.

Coming up, there's The Walking Dead season 10 finale this weekend (why do I bother, really?). Any other interesting series in the pipe that you can recommend?

Trying to reinstall OS

I have an iMac I want to do a clean install. I did what I would normally do, boot into recovery, clean the drive and then go into clean install. I get this error that "a required download is missing". I boot into internet recovery and it does something for about 10 mins with a spinning globe and a count down clock. When that finishes it sits on an Apple logo for 15 mins before I shut it down and boot into recovery again and try to install now. I get the same message. The OS that was on this iMac was Mavericks.

I thought I could just download an OS from the App store on my other iMac that I recently updated to Mojave. Well they changed the App store now and while I can see past purchases it does not show Apple OS's like it did before Mojave. So now I don't know how to get an installer so I can even attempt at making a bootable USB OS installer.

Anyone have an idea on how I can get a copy of Mavericks, or any newer Mac OS that will work on a 21" iMac? Not sure what year it is, but it does have an i5 so not a super ancient CPU.

There has been speculation in the media about the possibility and now we know for sure.

The rationale seems a bit flaky to me as the minority government appeared to be functioning well with an NDP and Greens coalition. I've never been an NDP supporter but am impressed with Horgan ... not so much with the head of the Liberals ... what's his name? :)

RIP "SINC" Don Sinclair

With the recent posting of obituaries on this forum, it strikes me that no obituary was ever formally and publicly posted for SINC, who passed away on June 21 at age 75. Don joined EhMac on Feb 16th, 2001 and continues to hold the record for the second highest number of posts. Don will be remembered for his many lively and friendly contributions here on any number of subjects, from nature to politics to humour. He will be missed — he already is.

Quote:

Mr. Donald John Sinclair, of St. Albert, AB, died on June 21, 2020 at the age of 75. Don was born on June 25, 1944 in LaFleche, Saskatchewan. His parents, LT. F.J.W. and Mae Sinclair, moved Don to Swift Current where his sister Dianne (Martens) was born and the family settled. He graduated from Swift Current Collegiate Institute. In 1965, Don married Ann, and the couple had 3 children, Gregory, Crystal and Matthew. Don had originally wanted to be a veterinarian but while waiting for his acceptance letter to arrive he started his career in the newspaper industry. Don worked in several cities across the country and was an integral part of establishing the newspaper industry in Canada. In 1969 he joined Bowes Publishing Ltd. and went on to hold many positions including Pressman, Editor, Publisher, Group Publisher and Chief Operating Officer at several newspapers until finally settling in St. Albert, AB in 1988.

Don had a passion for nature, music and loved photography. He enjoyed road trips in his motorhome with his friends and family. He was a conversationalist and always had time to share a joke, beer or some friendly advice when consulted. He was also a classic car enthusiast and loved showing off his pride and joy - a 49' Ford Meteor. He was a big-time Saskatchewan Roughriders fan and loved his dog Ely who he affectionately called his "little buddy."

Don had a lifelong dedication to writing about challenging issues which he knew were important. He worked countless hours on his site (mybirdie.com) so his readers would become informed about the St. Albert community which he dearly loved. He cared, and he wanted you to as well. This was his platform to create dialogue, learn from and for others to gain different perspectives. It didn't matter if the opinions differed from his or not. He was always ready to engage in lively conversation and was never afraid to stir the pot. Don is loved and missed by his wife, Ann; children, Greg, Crystal, and Matt (Holly); grandchildren, Nick, Jett and Shiloh, great grandson Christian and sister; Dianne, inlaws, nephews, nieces and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Finlay and Mae. At Don's request, no service will be held.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice in Don's name.

RIP Dianna Rigg

One of the truly great actresses. I remember her best as Emma Peel. The Avengers was one of dad's favourite shows and I bet she was the reason. Sorry to see her go!

https://www.leftoye.com/entertainmen...e-with-cancer/
Quote:

The Game Of Thrones star, Dame Dianna Rigg died at the age of 82 after a secret battle with Cancer since March this year, revealed her daughter actress Rachael Stirling.

“My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family,” Said Stirling in a statement “She died of cancer diagnosed in March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession. I will miss her beyond words.”

The tragic news of Dianna Rigg’s death came as shock to her beloved fan base. The Dame was well known for her role as Olenna Tyrell in the world-famous Game Of Thrones series and for her role as Emma Peel in TV series The Avengers.

In addition, prior to her death, Dianna Rigg was also the only ever woman to become Mrs Bond in the James Bond Franchise. In the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, she played the role of Tracy di Vicenzo.

7200rpm external drive significantly slowing down

One of my external hard drives has been slowing down more and more with each plugging in. The drive is 2.5-in. 7200rpm 1TB. I have noticed that it takes longer to mount the drive and lately longer and longer to show its content. The same problem appeared after I placed the drive in a different enclosure. As I am writing I have the drive hooked up to the 5K iMac that belongs to my friend, connecting via USB3.0. The drive is slightly over 50% filled. But about a month ago it was almost full, down to just under 2GB free space.

Transferring a small file is relatively fast, but to transfer 5GB of files would take more than 20 minutes.

I suspect that there are bad sectors or something else is not working right. Is the drive dying and this could be its last mounting? I have the drive hooked up to the 5K iMac until all the files are transferred over.

MBP Screen and Keyboard Marks

My mid-2015 MBP has marks on the screen that cannot be cleaned off and I'm assuming these are directly from the keyboard. I thought that only the old MacBooks and MBP had issues with that. Does the keyboard actually come in contact with the screen on newer versions? Probably slipping a piece of paper in between over the years would have been a good idea, but, I had it in my thinking that Apple rectified that problem with contact.

Move window off screen

This is the opposite of what people normally ask. I've found plenty of instances of people asking how to move an off-screen window back on screen. I want to do the opposite. I want to take a window and have it partly off the top of my screen.

This way I can position my Zoom/Skype/FaceTime window as close to the webcam as humanly possible (even past it so their face is right below it), making it feel more like I'm looking at the camera while I'm really looking at the person.

Is this possible?

Kitchener: I.E.D. detonates outside courthouse; 1 dead

What the actual hell?

Fatal car explosion outside Kitchener courthouse caused by suspected I.E.D.

Waterloo Regional Police say a man’s body was found inside a car that exploded outside of the regional courthouse in Kitchener on Friday morning.

Police said the explosion “appears to be the result of a suspected improvised explosive device.”

At around 5 p.m., police announced that officers were at homes on Hearthwood Drive and Grand Flats Trail in Kitchener with Peel Regional Police Explosives Disposal Unit “to ensure the safety of these residences.” Before 8 p.m., officers said the homes were cleared.

Emergency crews were initially dispatched to Duke Street between Frederick and Scott streets on Friday at around 10:30 a.m. to extinguish a car that was on fire.

“At this point, it’s very early in the investigation,” Const. Andre Johnson said from the scene at noon. “We are still trying to determine the cause of the fire and exactly what occurred.”

While he couldn’t say if there were any injuries, police announced later on Friday that a body had been discovered inside the car.

“We have our explosive device unit on scene trying to determine an origin of the explosion,” police spokesperson Cherri Greeno said.

She says they have evacuated the area and are advising people to stay away as a precaution.

“We have a large police presence there for quite some time,” she explained.

Razer Brings Back Left-Handed Computer Mouse to Address Disabled Gamers

Razer has revived the company’s left-handed computer mouse in response to demand from disabled gamers and southpaw users.

Razer previously discontinued the 2014 version of the product, citing low demand. Although the vendor ended up selling thousands of left-handed mice over the years, Razer actually ships the same amount of right-handed mice in a single day, according to company CEO Ming-Liang Tan.

“A left hand mouse requires significant investment —it's not as easy as just flipping the design over....

2020 MacBook Pro / Thunderbolt 2 dock

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and I'm hoping someone can help me out with a connectivity and compatibility question.

I've been using a 2014 MacBook Pro along with an Elgato Thunderbolt 2 dock for ages now—the dock connects my 2014 MBP to speakers, an external (Dell) display and my external hard drive, so that I can use one cord to power my entire desktop setup.

I was hoping I might be able to keep using the dock with the 2020 MBP as well, but I'm wondering if it's simply obsolete now. Would a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter daisy-chained to the dock (which uses a Thunderbolt 2 cable from dock to computer) still work, or is that not possible?

I have a USB C to Mini Displayport cable that doesn't seem to work at all, and would rather not invest in a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter if it's incompatible. And I would really like to not have to invest another $300 in an upgraded dock...

Any help would be super appreciated!

Apple audio book not syncing position across devices

I was gifted a few audio books last week. I started listening to one at work on Saturday on my iMac running Mojave. I packed up for the day and was in my car and wanted to continue on listening through my iPhone 11. When I play the book it starts right at the beginning, it has not synced the location from iTunes.

In iTunes "sync playback information across devices" is selected in preferences. Am I missing something here? Audio book played in iTunes on my iMac, wanted to continue on my iPhone playing through books app as I could not find my audio book in music.

Audible does this so well and what I normally use. I am hoping there is something I need to select to get these synced.

Anyone know this song and who did it?

I’m having a senior’s moment here. I’m trying to remember a song by a 1960s Toronto ( I think ) band. I can’t remember the band’s name but, to paraphrase the lyric goes like this ( beat is a light shuffle ).

“ I know you say we don’t want me, but I just can’t believe that that’s true I’m telling you one thing,I’m in love with you... ( forget the second verse but the chorus is ) so give me time that’s all I ask of you a little bit of time to prove I’m true and everything will work out fine give me time...

Anyone remember....

please help G4 imac issue...

so i recently dug out my old G4 imac (lampshade model) to mess around on it and do some updates to the ram and hdd. noticed upon booting up that i have some pixels out across the screen, but nothing majorly cutting off the screen...

but then i also noticed i have the flashing folder and it wasn't booting up to the OS. thought that was strange as i had tiger installed and was running fine when i last used it.... but i'm upgrading the hdd to a 500gb from the 80gb that was originally in it. so wasn't worried about the folder issue as i have to reinstall the OS anyway.

but i decided to do a further test of things and found the disc drive is not ejecting the tray no matter what i tried. i shut down (holding the power button till it turned off) and restarted it a few times thinking something was glitched or stuck and would eventually work itself out and no luck.

so from what i can access, i have power as it boots to the folder screen... my USB ports work as i can use the keyboard and get into terminal, my usb mouse works as i can see the cursor moving around on the screen. so it doesn't look like anything else has a problem.

i'm not sure if i can hear the hdd spin up so i think it might be an issue with the power to the hdd and disc drive. i changed the ribbon that goes from the disc drive to the disc drive to the motherboard and that didn't seem to work.... so would it be a bad power connection ? if so i guess it would be impossible to install an OS doing the USB stick trick ?

i haven't tried installing from an external drive yet as i only just thought about that method... i'm not concerned about the disc drive as once i get the OS back up and running i won't be using it as i have a massive external drive i will be backing up to and reading from. my main concern is just getting the OS on the new drive and back up and running.

are there any people on here that have had this same issue and was able to find the solution or install the OS at least ?

MacOS

I’m running 10.13.6 for the simple reason it runs APFS. And honestly, I think I should’ve stuck with 10.12 running a real MacOS: MacOS Extended (Journaled). Trade monopoly rules may just make that happen for consumer protection.

It will be a matter of time before I switch to a 16” MBP, the kind with a stupid touchbar & no effing ports (unless they give it a serious rethink, though I have my doubts). We real Mac people don’t care much about thinner & lighter (that’s just greedy), we want user-upgradeable, functional Macs.

Now, there’s no doubt the Unix-based OS X was a great improvement for stability and compatibility over OS 9. But there is no way I want to switch to FrankenOS. We’re okay with being fenced-in by the Apple ecosystem but they have no need to tighten the noose.

I have Notifications shut permanently off (do you really need to know any of that nonsense in real time?!?), made my iPhone 5c stupid (who wants to read the Internet on a postage stamp!?!), will NEVER adopt the Internet of Things, and have no interest in convergence. And Siri can take a hike! I don’t want iOS, padOS (even every month), watchOS. All these are just scams to part us from our money with shinier expensive kit.

I want a real Mac OS which works like a Mac! IMNHO, ideally, I’d like my Mac OS to run 32-bit and even PowerPC applications. I run a lot of GREAT legacy apps. Unfortunately, the new crew is running Apple into the ground. No vision since Steve Jobs.

I want my files to sit right where I put them, not some virtual alias. So NO Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur—HA!

I’ll probably wait to buy until MBPs come with a second iteration of ARM processors. I’m not the early adopter type unless my present MBP dies. But I sure miss my dead 17-inch. Size matters!

My question is, any guesses as to how long I can keep running Sierra or High Sierra on the newest Macs???

TIA!

make a .jsx script from a text file for Indesign?

When hunting around for a solution to make life a bit easier with a specific job I came across someone who wrote a script that should do exactly what I need. The problem is I have no idea how to make this script into a .jsx file that will work in Indesign.

I am using the latest version of Indesign CC.

I copied and pasted the info from the website into textedit. I then saved as an RTF as txt is not an option. I then changed the extension to .jsx and put it in the appropriate folder. Indesign shows it but it is greyed out. I am assuming I have done something wrong here. Is there a correct way I should be making a .jsx file on a Mac?

This is the script I want:

(function () {
var curDoc = app.activeDocument,
allPages = curDoc.pages,
nPages = allPages.length,
curPage,
i,p,
newMaster = curDoc.masterSpreads.itemByName("B-Masterpage");

for (i = nPages-1; i >= 0; i--) {
curPage = allPages[i];
p = curDoc.pages.add({appliedMaster: newMaster});
p.move(LocationOptions.AFTER, curPage);
}
}) ();

Did this exist or am I imagining things?

This is specific to Macs that have more than one user account.

Was there ever a feature whereby when I install some software, the system used to ask whether you wanted to install this software only for the current user or for all users? Or am I merely imagining something that never existed?

If it did exist, I wonder why Apple would remove this feature. There are times when I want to install something only on my wife's account and not on all accounts.

Just for informaton, both user accounts are Admin-level accounts.

However, I did try creating a Standard )non-admin) account and when I wanted o install something it still asked for the Admin-level user password - meaning, it was installing for "all users" and not just this one user.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

use stacks and sort by name?

So I upgraded to Mojave the other day. Was looking forward to using stacks as I work a lot off my desktop for active jobs. Everything looked good except that when using stacks with kind, all the folders I have in my desktop are no longer in alphabetical order. I see no option for that in "sort stacks by...". Am I missing something here? Or is this an oversight on Apples part? Currently I sort by kind, which automatically does alphabetically as well.

get rid of Apple update marker in dock?

So I upgraded to Mojave today on my 5K iMac. I like a few of the new features and the fact that system updates are not in the app store anymore. That being said it seems I have a constant "1" on system preferences as it tries to notify me that there is an update. The update it is showing is for Catalina and I am not upgrading to that. Is there a way to ignore and not show the update on the icon for the Catalina?

RIP Hugh Downs

"Hugh Downs has died at 99. The broadcaster was one of the most durable and versatile personalities on TV.

A mainstay of American TV-watching rituals for generations, Hugh Downs for years held the world record for most time on air — more than 10,000 hours — before Regis Philbin surpassed him in 2004. Viewers knew him from "The Tonight Show," "Today," and "20/20," which he co-hosted with Barbara Walters."

From the Newton to the Avro Arrow

Folks in ehMac may remember the Love Notes to Newton documentary created by a fellow named Noah Leon. He did a fabulous job, great reviews, and the film has been seen all over the world.

Noah's moving on to his next project, which may be of interest to some:
Chasing Arrows: Recreating the Avro Arrow

At Springbank airport in Calgary, a small group of dedicated volunteers work to recreate a national legend, the Avro Arrow–Canada’s greatest aircraft that never was, and that maybe you've never heard of.

* * *

A group of hobbyists in Calgary, Alberta decided is inspired to design and build an exact replica of the Arrow, although 60% of its size, the maximum size allowable by Canadian law. Based on original blueprints and collected documents, the Arrow II is being constructed from advanced materials in a hangar at the Springbank airport in Calgary.

Even more incredible than the actual plane, is the dedication of the volunteers who are creating it. This is a project unlike any hobbyist has ever taken on. The home-built aircraft is more advanced and faster than many civilian planes. To the volunteers recreating it, it is a joy to try and right a historical wrong. It is an attempt to re-live and rediscover one of our proudest moments, a golden age when Canada led the aerospace industry and briefly had the most technologically advanced airplane in the world.

* * *

This film will be released in two parts. Version I will be released at the end of 2021, documenting the difficult journey of making this aircraft. Version II will be released when the Arrow II finally takes flight, and completes the saga. We will have a very limited festival run, because we want to get the film to you as soon as it's done. We plan to screen the film at participating locations (museums) across the country, pending agreements. It will be a great opportunity to meet other Arrow-heads and celebrate this great plane and the people who built it. The film will also be offered to be screened in participating schools, as part of their history program–the goal being to remind and educate Canadians about this great achievement.

MacBook Pro 13”. 2019

Am I expecting too much?

I like to have an external keyboard,a mouse and a hard drive back up on my Macbook. I also need a printer and or scanner on occasion.

Right now I have bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a wireless printer. I am also wireless for the internet. The scanner is plugged in and one hard drive is plugged in to the computer.

We tried to hook up an additional hard drive that I save documents to on occasion..
That would not work - could not be seen on the computer. Also my mousE and keyboard started acting up - or not working as the case may be.

It’s the second hard drive that is confusing us - we have a Macbook Air that it works on.

How do we fix this?

Thank you for all your help

Apple moving to ARM processors

So it looks like Apple will be jumping ship from Intel to their own processors again. I have not watched the event yet so maybe it was answered there, but will we be looking at a similar transition like the PPC to Intel? Any other issues to expect? I did read it should allow for iOS apps to work on a Mac... not sure I need that. I am not planning on upgrading anytime soon, my 5K iMac is still running strong thankfully. The way Apple has been going this just might be my last Mac. The few apps that keep me in High Sierra (will upgrade to Mojave soon) and away from El Capitan will mean finding new solutions anyways. Adobe is already cross platform with my subscription so changing over would not be all that expensive as I will be stuck finding a few small replacements for apps I have.

Burning, Looting & Murder

I jes' luvs it when a cold slap of reality lands upside their heads...

Antifa Experiences The Midwest

Quote:

Some town in Western N.Dakota I think. Got wind Antifa and worse were going to cause trouble.

A whole bunch of locals, veterans, and bikers, coordinating with the police, did full load out kit (rifles, pistols, body armour, etc.) This included night vision gear, drones, and guys posted to rooftops. Some plain clothes in cafes and such gathering Intel & photos.

Whenever an Antifa cell would case a place and get ready to hit it, the militia guys would come out of the shadows to talk… and Antifa would run off. In one case 2 Antifa with “rifles” were suddenly looking at 2 militia guys (more in the shadows with IR)… turns out their rifles were airsoft guns. Those LARPer Antifa were very lucky the locals were very experienced at gun identification ’cause the locals had the real deal.

Apple Educational Back to School program starts, includes free AirPods

Not sure who is technically going back to school yet, but.. Apple's popular summer free headset this year includes AirPods, with the potential upgrade to AirPods Pro.

MacRumors has this starting today. Usually the offer proceeds through September.

Don't forget there is also the reduced educational pricing, though that isn't what it used to be.

This would be the first time the 'free' product is AirPods.

Soaked iPhone XR

I kayak at least once a week and yesterday while beautiful turned out to be a little disastrous. I had a crack in the bottom of my kayak that I had patched on the weekend. Turns out there is a another one that I missed which led to the back of my kayak getting a lot of water. I did not sink thankfully but the supposed dry box area in the kayak came out and my phone and keys were floating around in the back. I am not sure how long the phone was in the water, not sure if it came out when I lifted the kayak up to drain all the water or if it had come out earlier in the voyage. I am assuming it came out at the end so did not spend a whole lot of time submerged, but just an assumption.

Anyways long story short the phone was off when I pulled it out, I have not attempted to turn it on and put it in a container of rice immediately when I got home. I know the iPhone is supposed to be water resistant to a point and would have thought it should have been safe here as there was no way it was under a meter of water for an our. Is there some sort of fail safe where the phone turns itself off when detecting water in a situation like this? Not sure how long I should leave my phone in the rice and the temptation is to try it out. It is my only phone so I obviously want to have it up and running soon.

File sharing problem

G'day,
I have a 2012 Mac Mini running High Sierra and a 2007 Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. When I want to share files I click on the Mac Pro icon in the sidebar. The Mac Pro Public Folder, Home Folder, Hard Drive and connected drives all show up in the window. Is this normal or are there some settings to be tweaked?
Cheers.

a way for iTunes to save where you were listening?

I have been listening to lectures lately while at work when doing some mundane tasks. I had made the mistake a few times of quitting iTunes rather then just minimizing it and keeping it open. Doing this loses my place in the lecture. Is there a way for iTunes to remember my place much like Audible?

Retrieving email from iPad

Hi all,

New member here! Found the forum through a web search and I feel like I'm in the correct place.

I have an iPad related question. My Mother recently passed away and I want to save all the email on her iPad to a backup drive. Her account is no longer active so the email only exists on the iPad.

How would I go about retrieving and saving these? I know how to do it on my desktop but haven't a clue with the iPad.

Specs:
iPad 7th Generation
iOS 13.3.1

Thanks in advance!
