ipad home sharing issue

My iPad2 does not play the music or videos from my iTunes library on my iMac through Home Sharing. The music and video icons show up on the iPad, but will not play. But they all play fine on my Apple TVs. I'm running 10.6.8 on my iMac, and ios5 on the iPad.

Any suggestions?

anyone use Rosetta stone?

I decided I wanted to try learning a new language. So why not start simple right? I decided to give Japanese a go, have always been interested in the language and culture, so thought this might be a good starting place. I have Rosetta stone and the first learning pack for japanese. Starting with the first lesson, well, its like playing a matching game, match the word to the picture. Some of it seems like they are assuming you already know some of the basics, but this is the beginning. Is this part of how Rosetta stone teaches? Even though I am matching things, its not really sunk in. Just feels like it should be more basic I guess, not sure if this is how they operate.

Nexus 5 - competition for Apple

Well the Nexus 5 is sure a hot seller and seems like a winner and competition for Apple.

My youngest son lucked out with a black 32GB Nexus 5 model today and all available models were sold out in 27 minutes.

Yes he abandoned his iPhone some time ago and could get more done and better use with a Samsung Galaxy.

iPad Air has as much processing power as 2010 MAcBook Air!

I was looking at Geekbench 3 results posted for the new iPad Air. Results seem to be in the 1400 range for multi-core processing.

Having had a 2010 11" MacBook Air in the past, I remembered that it scored somewhat similar. I did a quick search, which indicate results in the upper 1300s for the 1.4GHz C2D model.

While I no longer have that computer, I remember being able to run Photoshop and Aperture on that machine without too much of a slowdown, and it's fully capable of running Mavericks today.

Which begs the question of whether apps will use that extra processing power for more than just flashy games. I would really, really, REALLY, love to have Lightroom for iPad. I'd pay $100 for it. It seems that there's enough processing power there; hopefully it gets put to good use.

I just noticed a strange thing when I print out a monthly calendar. I make an entry for Tuesday and when I print the calendar out, the entry also shows up on Wednesday. But the entry only shows up if I print it out. If I delete Tuesday's entry then the phantom entry on Wednesday also disappears on the printed copy. Any idea what's going on?

My Lai: 45 years later

The Vietnam War was a horrific period in world history. Many people have heard of the My Lai massacre of vietnamese villagers by U.S. soldiers - but how many know that the massacre was a cover-up by those soldiers for mass rape of women and children as young as 10 years old? Horrific. History forgotten is history repeated...

My Lai, Sexual Assault and the Black Blouse Girl: Forty-Five Years Later, One of America’s Most Iconic Photos Hides Truth in Plain Sight

Quote:

Looking back at the Vietnam war and the iconic photographs that mark that era, how is it that the American public knows about the “Napalm Girl” but no one knows or speaks of the My Lai “Black Blouse Girl?” And what does it mean that, forty-five years later, even though her experience was publicized by investigative reports and Congressional testimony, what happened to her – reflected in this famous photo – remains hidden in plain sight?

The My Lai Massacre captured public awareness largely due to the 1969 public release of graphic photographs taken by Army Photographer Ronald Haeberle. Since the release, viewers have been captivated by the visceral emotion expressed on the face of the woman in the foreground of the photo below (published in 1969 by Life magazine). According to Life’s caption of the photograph, these villagers were “huddle[ed] in terror moments before being killed by American troops at My Lai.”

Quote:

By reading the image closely, you can see that the teenager in the right background is buttoning up her blouse. It’s a curious action. Why would she be preoccupied with a button while the other people in the photograph were terrified of being killed? Why was the button undone to begin with?

Testimony from the 1969-1979 Peers Inquiry solves the mystery of the button: the image actually captures these women and children in the moments between a sexual assault and mass murder.

Quote:

...the older woman, who he presumed to be the girl’s mother, had been “biting and kicking and scratching and fighting off” the group of soldiers. The emotion on the face of the older woman in the foreground is not one of passive terror.

Once the soldiers noticed the photographer and journalist, they ceased the assault. Haeberle later recalled that after walking away, “I heard an M-60 [machine gun] go off, and when we turned back around, all of [the women] and the kids with them were dead.”

I realize you can get a hard drive bracket for the DVD drive slot but if I just took it out and left it at that would I have any problems with my MacBook? For Sale Random Stuff: cable modem, cables galore, PPC Adobe Design Collection, RAM etc

Hi everyone,

I'm doing a thorough cleaning of my office. This hasn't been done in many, many years and boy, the things I have amassed! I have a baby on the way (who's due to arrive any second!) and I better get this done before he does :)

I'd be really happy if someone could take all this stuff off my hands in one go rather than piecing it out. If no one is interested in any of it, it's going to the DUMP.

In the pictures, you will see an IDE OWC Mercury external hard drive. I'm pretty sure either the drive is toast, or the whole thing. Not sure, as I haven't powered it up since the LED turned red. I have other drives now. It has Firewire 400 and USB 2.0.

Firewire 400 cables galore, USB 2.0 cables, keyboard extension cable, old school Firewire 400 iPod charger (there's gotta be someone in need of this!), DVI to VGA adapters, old school Apple remotes, eSATA cable, a Palm Zire (yes! a freakin' PALM!) that may still work, but I cannot find the charger…original RAM pulled from a 2012 Mac Mini (4GB total), Patriot RAM 4GB PC2-5300 that's never been opened, and a brand new Speedtouch modem that's never been used.

Adobe Design Collection Student Edition: I bought this in college many years ago. I wish I still had the invoice but I do not. PPC of course, but maybe there's a school out there who may need it…?

I'm not looking to make any serious cash off this stuff, but make me an offer and haul this stuff away! Thanks all!

Launch Services and Mavericks

A very annoying corruption that I've had to deal with quite regularly is the rebuilding of Launch Services in both OS 10.7 and 10.8. I haven't yet migrated over to Mavericks 10.9, but I'm curious if other users who have had this same problem found that it is fixed in Mavericks. The usual symptom is duplicate entries of apps when choosing "open with." One particular app (PdfPen Pro) never opens when trying to open a document in this manner. Manually navigating is a pain. Rebuilding Launch Services corrects the problem, but only for a short time.

A strange think linked to my rebuilding this morning- mdworker (in Activity Monitor) is suddenly using lots of cpu. I also see numerous mdworkers at work in Activity Monitor. Mdworker has something to do with indexing, but I've never had trouble like this.

Adobe hack: At least 38 million accounts breached

Quote:

The software-maker said that it now believed usernames and encrypted passwords had been stolen from about 38 million of its active users.

It added that the attackers had also accessed details from an unspecified number of accounts that had been unused for two or more years.

The firm had originally said 2.9 million accounts had been affected.

Life span of an Apple laptop?

I have a late 2007 MB that's rough on the outside,(cracked and scratched case) but still runs ok (some glitches like shuts down intermittently). I travel a lot up in Nunavut and NWT by plane and helicopter. I'm thinking it would be so much easier carrying a MBA. Everyone in the family has their own laptop or Ipad so it's not like I can pass my old beat up one to someone in the family and I wouldn't get anything for it if I tried to sell it.

I'm figuring it's got another 2 years use left at least (groan..).

What's the longest you've held on to your laptop, or oldest in-use laptop you've seen.

Password creation problem

I have been a member of "groups" on Yahoo for ten years or more. Some three weeks ago was advised by Yahoo that my account was to be discontinued as my account had been hacked.

However signing up for Yahoo all over again is proving very difficult.

The password for starters has to be very very very difficult to break and have 8 to 32 letters

along with all the !@#$%^&*() as well as upper and lowercases and numerals.

Have tried to come up with something different each time, and the reply is the password is weak, try again. Ten or eleven tries means nothing to them.

The other problem for me is their request

for a confirmed cell phone number which I would assume

would in turn require some form of texting if they did ring.

I don't have a cell/mobile phone. Wouldn't even know how to text.

My question then to assembled is how to I get Yahoo to

respond and at least allow me back on. In my case I have

in the past used Yahoo Groups, most of the groups

I do follow came to Yahoo after their parent company(s)

were merged with Yahoo.

Any suggestions?

Do no plug an external HDD into your Mavericks Mac as yet!

It has very recently come to my attention that plugging your external HDD into your recently installed/upgraded Mavericks Mac may lead to severe and as yet irretrievable data loss.

Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0 et al.

Though most reported disasters seem to be involved with WD RAID 0s and ( remnants of) WD Drive Manager for Mac, in general, nor single FireWire nor singleThunderbolt external drives seem unaffected. Internal drives do seem inoculated, though, luckily.

I strongly suggest not connecting any external drives to your Mavericks Mac until this issue has been addressed by Apple and/or WD!

For that matter, WD seems to have removed WD Drive Manager for Mac from its site recently, which is revealing enough...

I am not a regular visitor here, but this matter seemed pretty urgent just now...

To your Dutch speaking community over there: welcome to Intermactivity.be. Greetings from Flanders!

iTunes Match works over Lightning interface in iOS7!

I'm not sure if this affects many people, but I was quite happy to see that iTunes match now works over the lightning cable connected to my car.

With iOS6, connecting the phone to the car only showed the list of cached songs, even if streaming over cellular was enabled. With iOS7, I now see all songs on iCloud, and if they're not on the phone, they start streaming automatically. (I have a Wind account with unlimited data, so I use this extensively now).

This certainly makes Match more useful for me.

Did a reinstall of .6.8 but it didn't help. I always thought an update was only going to give me new features but carry over old issues, but none of that so far.

So, I made a .6.8 to .9 jump and I feel like I'm on a brand new machine. Looking around to see if Apple have a free user guide as they do w/ the iPhones, but seems like not. Though I was used to buying OS books back in the day, but since Apple seems to have a recent change in heart / strategy w/ free s/w... ;)

Anyone out there have a good resource / doc to recommend for learning .8 or .9 inside out?? I know fiddling around will get me there, but I've always enjoyed a good solid read of a book to get me started.

Thx a mil.

HDMI to VGA adapter

Hope I'm not desecrating my favorite site with a Windows inquiry. We just purchased a Acer PC laptop for multimedia and found that it came without a VGA port. Now we need an HDMI to VGA converter in order to hook up to our projector. From what I understand, we need more than an adapter in order to convert digital to analog. I'm including a link of an HDMI to VGA adapter. Could someone tell me if this would be sufficient? From the description, this would be all we need. But others are telling us we need a converter box (USB to VGA).

So, what exactly should we be looking for?

Mavericks reinstall already

Well I decided to install Mavericks on a separate partition on Friday, then did the "software update" on Saturday and most everything I checked seemed to be working.

So I thought it would be a good idea to run Disk Utility with all the new stuff, and repair permissions and verify disk.

After a restart the problems started: many apps wouldn't even launch: Mail, Contacts, Dictionary, the new Pages and I don't know what else.

So a re-install of Mavericks was needed. Most of the newer installed iWork (Pages, Numbers) apps wouldn't open or work, so they needed to be trashed, which then allowed the software update to download and install them again.

Everything now seems to be working but I'm a bit leery as to what went wrong and the hard drive tests out fine.

I had Trashed some old stuff that was incompatible with Mavericks, but I can't see how that could have caused the problem. Quite strange.

Help! How do I add photos to a shared stream

I set up a shared photostream. I added some photos to it.

But now I want to add more, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it.

Here's what I've tried:

Go to album, select photos, tap add to, albums show up, but no shared stream.

I vaguely recall that the process was slightly obscure.

I know google is my friend, but it only coughs up instructions for setting up a stream so others can share, but no actual instructions for adding photos.

Please help, I'm losing my mind.

Print Queue No Longer Visible

Before I went Mountain Lion, I could see the print queue and could cancel the printing of a document if I needed to.

Now that the printer driver is no longer driving the printing -- it's my understanding that Preview does -- I no longer have access to the print queue. I do see "Open Print Queue" under "Print & Scan" in System Preferences, but clicking on it has no effect.

When I click on the printer icon at the bottom of the screen, at the top I get "Printer Proxy", which is a useless thing.

I've tried printing in Word, Safari, Evernote, etc., and I get the same problem all the time.

"Print & Scan" does give me access to Maintenance, which is very good, but I do need a way of cancelling printing once in a while. (For example, let's say I accidentally request 100 copies instead of 10...)

Thank you.

I've also tried to go to System Preferences--> Printers and scanners--> Options and Supplies to see if I can get any info that way, but it's a no-go, whether or not the printer is on, all I get is "information not available"

Is iCloud forcing multiple installs of iWork?

It certainly has been an interesting week....

The latest set of question marks arises from updating apps on a multi-account machine. After upgrading to 10.9, each account has had to sign up with its own Apple ID: that's not a surprise in the context of Apple's 'buy once, use anywhere' policy. What is more surprising is that the updater now reinstalls all the apps in full for each account.

Beside hogging bandwidth and taking up disk space, this also eats up about 20Gigs on my Time Capsule. What happened to 'one app, several users'? I sort of get the logic, the implementation is wasteful and inelegant. Did I miss something?

On personal attacks, sanitizing threads, no consequences?

So, there was some pretty nasty name-calling in The Gun Control thread yesterday evening by one of the usual suspects.

Is it the policy of the current administration to allow this sort of behaviour without repercussion? Namely, that you can say whatever you want, have it posted for all to see, a couple hours later it gets removed & life just moves on? No consequences? Any member can post whatever he/she/it wants about anybody else and not worry about penalty?

Do you really want these boards operated in an "open season on everybody" fashion? Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead?

'Cause I got no problem moving this whole show down into the mud & getting dirty. Thing is, the two dozen remaining posters you currently have on these boards will dwindle even further...

how to setup a postscript printer?

Having an issue with maverick and our rip for making plates for press. Normally we would just print to the rip, that no longer works. A work around is in indesign there is an option to select under printer: postscript file. This makes, obviously, a postscript file and instead of printing, it saves it where you want to save it. This would work as I can save the postscript file to a hot folder and let the RIP do its thing from there. What I am unsure about is how to set this up using a ppd if there is no printer installed? Is there a way to direct it to the ppd file I need?

Mavericks upgrade won't download

I posted this elsewhere on the site, possibly in error, so I'm reposting here.

Experience with iPad Lines on Launch Day

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can relay any experience with lines/stock of iPads on launch days in the last few years. Been a while since I lined up for one, but I was hoping to upgrade to the new iPad Air this Friday. I'm flying the evening of launch day and working that day as well so I'm not sure if I really have a shot at all.

Anyone have any experiences or thoughts on how the lines will be? Would I have any shot of getting one on my lunch hour? Or early in the day maybe, if they open early (haven't heard any plans of this)?

I suspect I may just order online and wait patiently for it (assuming it'll go on sale around 3 or 4 EST that morning) but if I can get one before my flight, it'd be nice to have for the plane and my trip.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Update for iPhoto 8

Apparently, iCloud won't backup my photos because my iPhoto version is too old, but when I try to purchase the update from the app store, it tells me that

iPhoto can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because OS X version 10.9 or later is required.

I don't have 10.9, just 10.8.5. I just got it this week, and have no intention of going 10.9 yet.

On the other hand, if I click on iPhoto Update in iPhoto 8, the message I get is

A New Version of iPhoto is available as part of iLife 11

which leads to several pages describing all parts of iLife, then it goes into iCloud and how to set it up. A real Catch-22!

Can you help me with this?

Thanks!

Migrating from old iPad to new iPad on Bell Mobility

Would you mind checking my stepwise plan for migrating from my old iPad 2 to a new iPad Air when I get one? Family member wants my old iPad.

Thank you.

--------------------------

Do not set up the new iPad as soon as you unbox it.

Plug it into a wall outlet though to ensure battery is charged.

Back up the old iPad:

Attach the old iPad to the iMac and iTunes.

Back up to iCloud and the iMac.

Deauthorize the old iPad in iTunes — apparently this does not affect the backups, only the ability to play iTunes-authorized media on that device.

Turn off the old iPad: hold down the power button and slide to power off.

Upload data and apps to the new iPad:

Turn on the new iPad and step through the setup procedure.

At the appropriate step in this procedure, when prompted to restore from a backup: Connect the iPad to the iMac and iTunes to authorize it to iTunes and restore apps and data from the old iPad’s iMac or iCloud most recent backup (is there a difference between the two backups?).

Set up iTunes preferences for the new iPad to sync selected music playlists and Aperture albums the way I did with the old iPad.

Transfer Bell Mobility cellular account to the new iPad:

Turn off the old iPad: hold down the power button and slide to power off.

Ensure the new iPad is off that way too.

Remove the Bell SIM card from the old iPad and put it into the new iPad.

Call Bell to activate the new iPad on the same account (I assume there is no easy way to do this without calling Bell?).

Deauthorize and wipe the old iPad:

AFTER SETTING UP THE NEW IPAD and ensuring all is well, reset the old iPad to “new” state:

Go to Settings, tap on General, and then tap the Reset button. Next, tap the Erase All Content and Settings button. When you erase your content, Activation Lock is also turned off.

Let the new owner set it up as new.

Printing issues and Maverick

I always test a new version of OS X on my machine before ever installing it on the rest of the machines at work. It is frustrating that with almost every major OS X update (lion, mountain lion, mavericks, etc) that it brings about printing issues. Do they change that much in OS X to effect printing? I will have to switch back to mountain lion tonight just to regain normal functionality with printing. Everything else in mavericks works fine, love the tabbed folders, etc. I am trying to print to our RIP but it is a no go now. Constantly pauses the print cue. I tried getting a new ppd from pressteks website, no change. Tried reinstalling the printers, again with no change. A very frustrating experience.

Even with our Xerox digital press (DC260) there are issues when sending larger files. I can work around that one easily at least. It is very frustrating that an update like this seems to bring about so many problems when it comes to printing. Especially since there is no real huge difference between mountain lion and mavericks that I can see. Seems like little tweaks here and there, again not sure why they would change things so much that it would effect printer drivers and such.

My early-2011, 16GB MacBook Pro is still running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I am thinking about upgrading it all the way to Mavericks, but not right away perhaps in a month or so when I know that all the software that I use are fully compatible.

I went to the Mac App Store, found the Mavericks upgrade page and saw the button "Free Upgrade". Clicked on that I saw the button changed to "Install App". What would happen next when I hit the button to start the download? I am assuming that it will get me the installer, then I can put it on a USB thumbdrive using Disk Utility to make a bootable drive. After that I will be able to do a clean install of Mavericks. Is this the sequence of events for a clean install?

Tricky activating iCloud Keychain on iPhone

The servers are so busy this first night of Mavericks that after I installed the iOS7 update on my iPhone, the delay until I received my verification number on the phone while trying to activate iCloud Keychain was so long that I got ahead of myself. I kept entering the wrong number because I thought nothing was happening and started over. Again, which generated a new number before the previous one arrived. Finally wouldn't let me keep trying to catch up. Sigh.

SSD arrangements

Just got another new SSD (Samsung 840 Pro 256BG and was going to install it in my Dell D830 laptop or my weather software. Now I'm considering swapping my 2 year old Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB out of my Optibay in my MBP and put the Samsung 840 Pro in there instead and put the older Mushkin (after initializing for Windows) into my Dell. My MBP is my main workstation and would prefer the newest and most up-to-date available. Reviews have gone down on Mushkins in 2 years which have the older Sandforce controller. Is there any reason why I shoudn't sway the Muskin in my MBP for the Samsung? Like I said, my Dell is solely used for my weather software and website. It'll be a bit of work taking out the Optibay but I've obviously done it before. Any comments?

iPad for school

Hi all,

Back when the iPad was first released, I purchased one to use as a school device. At the time it worked ok, but really lacked in quality apps and the web experience wasn't the great.

Since then the iPad has obviously come a long way. Can anyone shed some light on their experience with the newer iPads in the past year or so in an academic setting? (Web Browsing, Note Taking, Document Viewing/Editing)

With the release of the new Retina Mini, I'm considering going back to an iMac + iPad over my MBP, since I don't really like carrying around a laptop.

Mavericks on Core 2 Duo?

Anyone been playing around with Mavericks (or any of its betas) on 'older' hardware?

I'm tempted to install it on my 2007 iMac (2.4, Core2Duo, 6Gb), but I'm wondering if I'd see any of the talked about speed advantages, or if this upgrade is better left to a newer machine.

Thanks

Is there a way to get chrome to close after closing the last window? currently if you close all windows the process just sits there running. I didn't know where else to post this and this seemed like the right place.

Snow Leopard upgrade

Quick question.

Installing 10.6 over fresh install of 10.5+iLife (factory discs), will result in 10.6+iLife? No, registration or user accounts created.

I thought this had worked like this before, just verifying with the community.

I have a copy of Adobe Lightroom 5 I picked up from Henrys last day of August after my Creative Cloud subscription expired.

I had opened the packaging but had not installed or registered.

Had I bought from adobe I could have returned for a full refund but deciding to support a local reseller backfired again. (Turns out I can qualify for the Photoshop/Lightroom bundle thanks to a copy of Photoshop that came with my Wacom tablet years ago)

Paid $160 + tax

Will sell for $140.

I can drop off and you can install/register if you want before exchanging funds.

question about scam emails...

They are easy to spot and I have no issue ignoring and marking as spam. One today though left me curious as the email address that was associated with the sender had our domain docs8@xxxx.ca

It is not one of our email address, and obviously spam, but this leaves me curious how they could send something and it shows up on our end coming from an email address that looks like it would be associated with our website.

So I borrowed an iPad 2....

I had the good fortune of being able to borrow an iPad 2 from work to road test the thing. Now to be fair, I haven't really used it enough to make a final opinion, but the more I use it the more I can't help feel I would be happier with an 11 inch Air.

I like the size, but I still think I can get more functionality out of the Air. I use it to teach, and one on one it is a great tool, but I am not so sure it's better than an Air.

Anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?

Network help

We live in the country with limited internet provider choice.

Due to poor service we switched to Bell using their Netgear wireless setup which is actually on the cellular network, we just got cell phone service here so at least we have an option.

My problem is I can't get my AirPort Extreme router to work with the netgear. The netgear wifi is no where near as good as the AirPort Extreme.

Can someone give me some direction to set up this service so the bell netgear is just access to Internet and my AirPort Extreme supplies our wifi?

I would prefer to connect the AirPort Extreme to the netgear with CAT5. I also have 2 airport express that connect to the extreme using CAT5.

Thanks for the help.

VueScan Alternative?

I've just upgraded to 10.8 and now my Canon LIDE80 scanner is incompatible with VueScan. I have confirmed this with Hamrick, so there's no hope there.

I checked, and that model is not supported by 10.8 either.

Can anyone recommend an alternative software or will I have to get a new scanner?

Thanks!

Does anyone know any stores selling the rokform iphone 5s cases in Calgary? Apex wireless used to be a rokform dealer but they closed down.

I'd order online. But that means an unprotected phone for at least a week.

Not The Norm - Lines

From all my research my issue doesn't seem to match what others have described.

I have horizontal lines appearing on my screen, but in an even 'bar' from top to bottom. They are likely there all the time but appear more easily with a dark background.

There is a slight flickering to them, but the shape of the bar remains constant.

iPlayer Automator?

Anybody use iPlayer Automator to download British TV programmes?

I think it does it through the BBC iPlayer site, but the Beeb have just dumped the old iPlayer Desktop and replaced it with a new programme, iPlayer Downloads. That doesn't use Adobe Air, so is theoretically a stronger programme.

But they seem to have also changed the file format they are using, as I've not been able to download anything using iPlayer Automator since the change.

I wondered if anybody else is having this problem? It could also be because my MBP is pretty beat up and held together with duct tape, so I always worry that terminal decline (in more ways than one) is setting in and the machine is slowly failing.

Walt
