Well I decided to install Mavericks on a separate partition on Friday, then did the "software update" on Saturday and most everything I checked seemed to be working.
So I thought it would be a good idea to run Disk Utility with all the new stuff, and repair permissions and verify disk.
After a restart the problems started: many apps wouldn't even launch: Mail, Contacts, Dictionary, the new Pages and I don't know what else.
So a re-install of Mavericks was needed. Most of the newer installed iWork (Pages, Numbers) apps wouldn't open or work, so they needed to be trashed, which then allowed the software update to download and install them again.
Everything now seems to be working but I'm a bit leery as to what went wrong and the hard drive tests out fine.
I had Trashed some old stuff that was incompatible with Mavericks, but I can't see how that could have caused the problem. Quite strange.
