Frame rate drop on Video File

Hi,

I'm working on playback of a video file for an art project. Strangely, the file plays fine except for one segment where the frame rate drops from 25 to around 0.

I get the same thing from 2 different files derived from the same source. Here are the specs on the video file:

File 1:

Apple Pro Res 4.2.2

Frame Rate: 25

File 2:

Apple Intermediate Codec

Frame Rate: 25

I have this identical playback issue on both my 2010 MacBook Pro and a current i5 (2.5 GHz) Mac Mini.

HOWEVER . . . when I playback the file on my Mac Pro 12 Core 2.66 there are no issues. Flawless.

A couple of questions:

1) Does anyone have any idea what causes one small segment to lag like this?

2) Are there any opinions on whether moving to a Quad Core i7 (2.3 Ghz) Mac Mini will resolve the issue?

Thanks for your help!

Disabling AutoSave feature in Mavericks

I notice, on occasion, that I have multiple emails of just one email I created, but all with varying amounts of the full text. I assume this is the AutoSave feature kicking in, of which I'm not too fond of. Is there something done in the Terminal to disable these feature (and turn in back on)?

HELP Excel is driving me nuts when I try to enter data

Maybe someone has a solution - couldn't find anything via google.

I have a large spreadsheet in Excel 2004

Now, when I want to enter text in a new cell towards the bottom of the spreadsheet, say cell C140, the whole spreadsheet moves, looks as if it is going back to the home position, ie I have cell A1 at the top left as soon as I type the very first character of the new text entry.

I'm not hitting return or any thing else - happens invariably as I enter the first character of the text into that new cell.

If I continue to type the rest of the entry in the spreadsheet it completes but I can't see the cell.

And to type the next entry I have to scroll down again.

I googled for this - nothing

I went through all the Excel preferences - there doesn't seem to be anything that relates directly to an action as soon as one types any character into a new cell.

Any ideas how toprevent this type of operation?

I just want to stay wherever I'm typing.

Lost arrow (to get back or forward)

Hi

Suddenly, on Safari, I didn't have anymore the arrow to go back one or more website I was browsing. The other arrow is also missing.

Instead, I had an adblocker ad from some jerk asking for money. I disabled ad blocker. The ad went away, but the arrow did not come back. Instead, I have a + sign with which I can register the current web site.

It is very annoying.

Anything I can do so I can browse back and forth?

Thanks

Firefox keeps slowing down...

I started to use Firefox to replace Camino - closest I could find as a replacement that gives me the features I absolutely need.

At the beginning things went well - I loaded two add-ons which gave me the additional functionality I had with Camino, actually even slightly better, and FF was much quicker than Camino in loading sites.

FF also had some nice ways of automatically saving text entries of fields in web forms so I didn't have to retype them.

So far so good but over time FF really started to slow down.

A google search came up with a suggestion to "reset" (or words to that effect if FF slowed down.

I tried that and it solved the problem but it also wiped out some of my user names I had saved for certain websites (which the "reset" was not supposed to affect.

But a few days, say a week later, FF became noticeably slower again.

This time a message came up that there was a software update available.

I updated FF and the speed was back where it was originally - nice and very fast.

That was afew days ago and now I notice FF starting to load websites slower and slower again.

I don't really feel like "resetting" FF every week or two and then have to dig out my user names for the various websites I visit.

Just wondering if anyone on ehMac is using FF or what other alternatives are to replace Camino.

Apple's Done Everything It Can To Put Repair Guys Out Of Business

iFixit boss: Apple has 'done everything it can to put repair guys out of business'

Quote:

New plan to make fixing iOS gadgets easier and rewarding

Fixing and upgrading iOS devices can be a rewarding business opportunity, so long as you don't mind having to fight Apple every step of the way.

So says the founder of iFixit, who spoke at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco on Thursday. The repair outfit's CEO Kyle Wiens said there is little or no official public information for servicing the handheld gizmos: everything his company does, from its famous tear downs of new hardware to the manuals and how-to guides it publishes, are put together without any more access to Apple than is enjoyed by the average person on the street.

Wiens said he flies staff to Australia to get their hands on new hardware as early as possible to tear-down and review before folks in the US wake up hungry for the latest coverage. His repairs team also combs through the inventories of third-party resellers to obtain replacement parts and spare components that Apple does not offer.

He said that not only does Apple make fixing its fiddly electronics extremely difficult, but doing so with the blessing of the company is practically impossible: Apple's authorized technician certification apparently only applies to Mac computers, rather than iThings, and even that qualification is becoming more difficult to obtain.

"They [Apple] have done everything they can to put these guys [third-party repairers] out of business," claimed Wiens.

Moving back to India - lots of stuff for sale

Over the course of the last year there have been some major events in my life, culminating in my having to sell our home here and move permanently back to India.

Well, the house has been sold (closing date May 15), my wife and I are flying back to Bangalore, India on May 19.

Life for my wife and me in Canada has been good and bad, skewing towards "good". It is going to be a paradigm shift, living in India again, 25 years after leaving.

We are now in the process of coordinating the closing of all accounts, selling off almost all of our stuff etc. It is a logistical nightmare, considering it's tax season here and in the US, and that every service needs us to have a Canadian address to send final statements or refunds to. We will no longer have a Canadian address as of May 15, and do not know anyone well enough to use theirs. Anyway, that's not a major issue - just a headache.

Well, we are selling everything in the house except the computers and clothes. Any EhMacer who is interested in taking a walk-through of the house and make offers is welcome to do so.

I have too many things to list here, and I cannot ship; hence the invite to walk-through.

Cheers

Good things that happened to me lately (post here!)

We have threads of interesting links, threads of funny things, but I have yet to see a thread specifically dedicated to recognizing the good things that happen to each of us.... share your good fortune with the rest of us!

Today, I received a call from an unknown number. Down here in Mexico that usually means an extortion call... if you answer it, you provide no information until you figure out who the caller is.

Glad I answered. It was my cable/internet provider - the one I have railed against in years past for horrible service. Some poor shlob (schlob? shalob?) was given a client's phone list and was letting everyone in my neighbourhood know that we needed to unplug our cable modems for a minute this afternoon... so that upon resetting, the modem would handshake with the newly-upgraded fibre-optic system they've just finished installing :love2:

No increased fees (I pay about $37/mo for cable + 10meg internet). Just mucho faster... a claim I'll be testing out when I get home from work in a couple of hours....

Now, how about you?

dmg of fresh 10.4.x install from 2007 imac to restore to partition on 2008 imac

hey there guys;)

soooo obviously most of u know probably that its impossible to install tiger intel onto a 2008 imac.. it just wont start the installation cd no matter what..

but....... i was reading that its possible to boot tiger on my 2008 24" imac

the only catch is that its only possible by installing first on a 2007 imac (any model) and then creating a backup disk image of the freshly installed 10.4.10 or 10.4.4 (whatever it is) installation.....

im hoping someone will read this and already have a dmg made for this exact purpose that they might graciously feel like sharing with me so that I could

get a bootable tiger install on my drive!

the only thing i read that was possible to go wrong on this woudl be the built in sound might stop working.. but this is ok because i have audio interfaces that will work for sure..

why would i want to do this?

i have a few apps that run on tiger but not on leopard!!!!

also, i always loved the design of Tiger's UI...! :love2:

Where to buy or order iPhone 4 screen protectors

Hello all,

Being the cheapskate that I am, I'm hesitant to spend 30$ on a screen protector. I must say though, my last one was a power support matte protector and it looked absolutely awesome. I want to get the same kind for iPhone 4.

What I don't get is that the iPhone 4 is now really old and cases and stuff cost much less now the 5 and 5s/c are the latest models. I've looked everywhere on the web, even ebay but haven't been able to find a cost effective source for the power supply scren protectors. Anyone have any suggestions?

Apple Laptops... is it worth it these days?

My current MBP is starting to wear-out and when I look at the newer models I'm having a hard time believing there's more value in staying with Mac over PC.

I joined in 2006... back then I did a cost/benefit analysis of Mac's vs PC's... basically Mac's overall were a better bang for buck for what you were purchasing. I bought a MBP shortly after and never looked back. I've owned several since then and loved the experience.

Simply put, over the long term (3-4 years), Mac's (more specifically portable laptops) held the best value+Experience at the time. The price of an Apple laptop justified the entire experience.

Or at least I thought so until recently... I'm starting to wonder if that is the case anymore. My feeling is that PC's have caught up with their Mac (MBP) counterparts.

As an example, a higher end laptop from a good manufacturer is easily just as fast and feature rich as their MBP equivalent, for either an equivalent price or less.

I currently use Apple for my personal and home use, and PC for work/business. My gut is now telling me that I should switch my personal and home use to PC... get out of Apple...

Am I crazy or anyone else feel the same way?

Help Creating WCAG Accessible PDF files from InDesign CS5 files

I'm really struggling with generating Accessible (WCAG 2.0) PDF files from a very complex InDesign CS5 file (24 page Magazine format).

I've visited Adobe Forums, Youtube Tutorials etc. but I'm still having difficulties creating Accessible PDF files. No matter how much time I spend working with the Structure Panel in ID, when I export the file to PDF and open it in Acrobat Pro, the tag structure order is no where near the same as what I set up in IDCS5 file.

Can anyone suggest good online info source, service, or experienced professional who could help me generate the required PDF files? Any pros out there with experience and success generating WCAG 2.0 Accessible PDF files from Native InDesign files? If not, can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Update: My experience and switch from Bell to VoIP to SIP :) steps involved

About 10 years ago I reached my limit of Bell services for LAN, we had 3 lines which cost us over $150/month for phones lines ridiculous.

so we switched over to Primus talk broadband which was VoIP based LANs was $85 per month..

but I still lacked the services I wanted : option to have calls ring through to my iPhone or place calls on my iPhone but with my office line.. [ I needed SIP services to allow more options ]

So recently I switched over to a company called Callcentric - VoIP Internet phone service - ported the numbers I wanted to keep. my service costs are now $27/month.. :D :love2: for 2 Lines.. [ you receive unlimited incoming calls per line - up to 3 out bound calls per line - in my case that is up to 6 calls outbound ] - 1 business line and 1 personal line

- Plus I have free unlimited long distance to North America - all the call features I wanted.. best part is when my Lan line rings at the home office - it rings on the iPhone too..

so i can answer the call any where any time from any receiver.. plus the bonus.. when I am on the road : I make all the long distance calls i want to north america FREE from my iPhone and air time free [wifi/lte]. People think I am at the office.. :) - I can also place multiple calls and conference calls as well transfer my calls to an extension - from my iPhone too..

If you have an iPad - now you can turn it into a full fledged business tool as you can install a SIP software on your iPad and enjoy full telephony from the iPad.

if you switch to call centric please refer me so I can get a referral fee :)

My ID number is 324801.

if you have any questions let me know.

Update: My experience with VMedia switch over :)

So a little while ago I posted I was at my wits end with rogers hosing me also not willing to match prices..

Recently I came across VMedia: Cable TV & Internet Service Provider Toronto/Ontario, IPTV & Home Phone Providers in Canada - promising unlimited, contract free tv and internet services..[ pick and choose what you want to watch service ]

I signed up with the Premium TV services - plus a few extra packages, 45/4 cable net.. they also offer DSL fibre services.

It was painless. I went to Canada Computers bought 2 vBoxes and 1 thomson 476 modem.

bonus alert : if you buy vBoxes from CC they give you 2 free months of TV services..

After I bought the equipment I cancelled with rogers first. received my end date and cancellation - went over to the v media portal and signed up.. painless.. $20 CRTC fee to switch [ odd  ] but i guess everyone wants their pound of flesh..

Now the service review : it is amazing.. picture quality is very very very good. I see no difference from Rogers. The HD channels are clean.. there are a few channels that broadcast in SD - which is no big deal - weather network..

The whole new experience the Vbox brings to tv viewing is amazing.. youtube, surfing, email, radio, netflix, tons of other apps you can download : angry birds and Facebook too. ALL WIRELESS - NO WIRES - CLEAN hidden.

I love the remote they give you easy, not confusing, very minimal compared to rogers and clean lay out.

The switch over from rogers internet to VMedia internet was easy.. on the day of the hand over - I simply replaced the modems and kept going.

During the switch, days leading up to the switch VMedia sent many communications emails to keep us up to date.. [ that is great customer service ].

also really like the interface for the vbox - it is fast and very quick compared to rogers VOD which was slow and painful. [ not to mention rogers never had any current titles. ]

savings over rogers is over $100 / month

Can't get Griffin iMic Mike input to work

I have a set of Sennheiser headphones with a mike boom that I want to use with a Macini and Skype.

Tried plugging in the two mini plugs into the Mini but the Mike part didn't work.

I assume the Mini input is a line level input not a low level Mike input, so this won't work.

Had an iMic lying around - this model:

http://ift.tt/1dn8Nps

Tried that but still couldn't get the Mike to work.

I set the inputs and outputs in sound preferences to the USB input/output - headphones work fine that way but the Mike still does not.

The little slide switch between the to ports on the iMic is to switch between line and mike input levels, but which is which?

There is no designation on the unit itself and the iMic manual I downloaded was no help.

I assume the slide switch for low level Mike input should be towards the Mike input.

Does anyone actually have the iMic working with a microphone input?

What could I be missing?

Hello There,

I have another Mac question. I am using my Mac Mini from last 1 year and only couple of times I noticed the fan goes loud moment after I press the start button placed at the back of Mini. I shut down the Mac & detach-attach all connections and it work fine. So, why fan goes loud:confused:? Is it due to high power supply or some other reason.

Migration of files from Snow Leopard Mac to Mavericks Mac

I'll try to make this short and sweet.

Ethernet cable connection.

Mavericks Mac.

The window: Select the information to transfer - Choose which information you'd like to to transfer to this Mac.

"Checking "My Name" computer", which is the Snow Leopard Mac

Spinning pin wheel, and the Continue button is dim.

Snow Leopard Mac.

The Migration Assistant window: Connect to the other Mac.

"Looking for other computers".

Spinning pin wheel, and the Continue button is dim.

Now my question is, has the Mavericks Mac made a successful connection to the Snow Leopard Mac and because of the 300/350GB of files on it, the Mavericks Mac is taking a long time locating the files that would be transferable? If so, how long should "Checking "My Name" computer" take before I will be able to select what I wish to transfer? And how long would it take to transfer 300/350GB via ethernet cable connection?

How An Under-Appreciated iOS 7 Feature Will Change the World

Quote:

A curious download hit Apple’s app store this week: a messaging app called FireChat.

It’s a new kind of app because it uses an iOS feature unavailable until version 7: the Multipeer Connectivity Framework. The app was developed by the crowdsourced connectivity provider Open Garden and this is their first iOS app.

The Multipeer Connectivity Framework enables users to flexibly use WiFi and Bluetooth peer-to-peer connections to chat and share photos even without an Internet connection. Big deal, right?

But here’s the really big deal — it can enable two users to chat not only without an Internet connection, but also when they are far beyond WiFi and Bluetooth range from each other — connected with a chain of peer-to-peer users between one user and a far-away Internet connection.

It’s called wireless mesh networking. And Apple has mainstreamed it in iOS 7. It’s going to change everything. Here’s why.

It can also extend an Internet connect to a place where none exists — for example, to a hotel basement, cave or to rural areas where cell tower connections are non-existent.

It does that through the mesh networking capability inherent in the Multipeer Connectivity Framework. With multiple users in the area, FireChat can relay messages just like the internet does, from node to node (phone to phone).

(Apple’s AirDrop works in the same way, by the way.)

Here’s an example. There’s an ultramarathon that takes place in California each year on a trail called Skyline-to-the-Sea. It’s a roughly 30 mile trail through giant redwood forests where there is no cell connectivity. Using FireChat or some other app that uses iOS 7’s Multipeer Connectivity Framework, race volunteers, staff and participants could extend Internet connectivity and communication in an ad hoc mesh network that extends the length of the course.

The benefit of such an ad-hoc network is how trivially easy it is to set up. Everybody just use FireChat or AirDrop or any other similar app. Boom! Connectivity for everyone.

Coin collectors - a new one for you

How the U.S. Mint Made Its First-Ever Domed Coin

Quote:

Later this month, the U.S. Mint will release a coin unlike any it’s ever made. Instead of being flat, it is shaped something like a bowl, with a convex surface that calls to mind a ball.

A baseball, to be precise.

The design, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, bears the image of a baseball on one side. The obverse side, as it’s officially known, shows a baseball glove, gently curving inward. It’s a clever marriage of form and content, with the convex and concave sides lending the ball and the mitt a measure of three-dimensional realism. It’s also about as radical as coinage gets, and required an unprecedented effort by our nation’s money makers.

“This was like a moonshot for us,”

Quote:

Initially, the plan was to make only the gold and silver coins domed. But at some point, an order came down to make the clad, half-dollar coins (those that, like nickels, dimes, and quarters, have a copper core plated with nickel alloy) were to be curved as well. This was another challenge–Antonucci called the clad coin his “nemesis”–as introducing additional metals increased the risk of warping and die defects. But his team eventually got the kinks ironed out, tweaking the shape of the dome and the severity of the relief to make it all work. This coin is the first clad domed coin produced anywhere in the world.

Quote:

The Congressional bill gave the mint permission to issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins. Prices will include an additional charge of $35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each half-dollar, with proceeds going to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The coin will be released March 27.

The unique design will likely make the coin a hit with collectors. But for Antonucci, in a world defined by exacting specifications, where every detail is legislated, the dome was a rare chance to push his craft into new territory. The resulting tender, he says, is unlike anything you’ve held before.

Wanna go to jail? Give people free money.

Teen says father in custody in P.E.I. after cash giveaway in Halifax

A Prince Edward Island teenager says her father gave out $50 and $100 bills to people in Halifax and Dartmouth last week and is now being held in a Charlottetown hospital’s mental health unit.

The Americans think Quebec is a country already..

I went to purchase something online and was asked which Country?

and this pop up appeared.. how disgusting to have that fleur de PQ appear next to Canada..

Normally, I buy; then asked US or Canada :English or French - never like this.

I wish other nations respect our Country, not cater to special interest groups.

Seems PQ is wining the separation cause out side our borders.

Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw, SK

First time my wife and I went on a kids free holiday in over 15 years. It was a fantastic trip because it was everything we hoped it would be which was 100% relaxation. Toured the downtown, took in the historic Tunnels of Moose Jaw (awesome!) but it was relaxing in the outdoor spa on a cool winter's day that made it all worth while. Highly recommend it for those who have the opportunity and need some down time.

Mavericks unable to mount some DVDs on FW optical drive?

So I finally bit the bullet and made the quantum leap from a Quad-G5 running 10.5.8 to a Mac Mini Server running Mavericks (10.9.2).

I currently have a firewire chain from the Mini to an external HD, and then from there to a DVDRW. One issue I've had is that I am unable to mount some DVDs in the optical drive: audio CDs mount fine no problem, many DVDs I've burnt of downloaded purchase software work, but things such as factory original software refuse to mount:

  • DiskWarrior 4

  • Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows (trying to mount to load it into a Parallels instance)

  • Microsoft Windows XP

These are all original (i.e. boxed versions) of the software. The DVDs mount fine on my wife's MBP (running 10.6.x). As a test I've checked several store-bought intsallers, and a mix of UDF and ISO9660 discs have all mounted successfully.

Has anybody experienced optical drive issues in Mavericks?

Cable question - direct or not connection for modem

So I have a question. Since I left rogers and went with vmedia.ca

I have disconnected the cable jacks at my network work panel that feeds the cable outlets in the house.

What I did was directly connect the outside / street feed to my modem, but I installed a -3db filter to the line. Should I or can do with out the filter? My concern is firing my cable modem if signal is too strong with out it. The manual of the Thomson 476 mentions a splitter but I guess they saying that for safety?

Any advise or ideas. Thanks in advance. :-)

Blast from the Past - Lexmark E250 DN printer 9.2.2 woes

I have a Lexmark E250 DN printer that I bought new (ages ago) with the express intent of using it with 9.2.2. I finally opened the box yesterday to find that the Install CD was 10.2-10.4. The installers downloaded from Lexmark's site did NOT install a printer for the chooser, opening the installer and dragging the printer driver into the proper places in the System Folder didn't work either.

The printer is on the network and can be seen by all macs except for the one running 9.2.2 (the 9.2.2 can see my other networked printers)

I've gone into the configuration menu, made sure that mac binary was enabled, installed carbonlib 1.6 onto the iMac running 9.2.2 (no OSX on that machine).

Any ideas on a fix? If anyone has a proper install disk for SYS 9 or earlier, can you image it?

Here are the install images I downloaded from Lexmark without any joy.

Alternatives to Skype?

What do members recommend as an alternative to Skype? Please bear in mind video as well as audio and, of course, security and privacy when making suggestions.

The reason for the request is that our Skype video ceased working last year. Audio still works. This problem was mentioned elsewhere online and on a thread here last year: Skype video not working now Apparently this was done as a deliberate act by Microsoft, who own Skype. We use Skype v 2.8.0.866 on our iMac. This version has been entirely satisfactory up until late last year, working for us between North America, Europe and Africa. We did not upgrade because 2.8.0.866 reliably did everything we needed.

There's an old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" As 2.8.0.866 was so reliable the reason for MS sabotaging it has nothing to do with improving reliability. There was no need for an update to improve service. Perhaps there is another reason for trying to impose upgrades on users. One of the complaints from snoops was that it was difficult (but not impossible) to monitor Skype calls because the packets travel over different routes. In view of the Snowden exposures and the confirmation that companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple knew of and participated in NSA/GCHQ Internet spying: US tech giants knew of NSA data collection, agency's top lawyer insists | World news | theguardian.com perhaps this deliberate sabotage of a good version was done to try and force users to use a replacement version that is compromised with backdoors for snoops.

By the way, how many actually believe that this: Apple rushes to fix glaring security flaw: 'As bad as you could imagine' - The Globe and Mail was an oversight by all those massively talented people at Apple?

Back to the question: what is a good replacement for Skype?

Hard Drive Running Out Of Room!

Hi Gang,

I thought I'd post a general query to get other people's take on this... I have a mid 2011 27" iMac that's about a year and a half old. I got it with the upgraded Core i7 processor, 8 GB of memory, AMD Radeon 1024 graphics, and the 1T HD. My use is just general home stuff, word processing, web surfing, maybe burning an occasional disc or manipulating a file. Anyways, at the time the 1T hard drive was plenty as my prior computer only had a couple hundred gigs on it. Unfortunately all that changed a year ago when I got a beautiful B&W A7 AirPlay speaker last year and I've since put most of my music collection on the computer in ALAC. It's working great but I've pretty much maxed out my HD with only 50 gigs free! Obviously there isn't any room for adding material and I think it's not even optimal in terms of free swap space on the drive, so I'm left with 2 possibilities: move my iTunes media library to a dedicated external HD (connected by USB2 or Lightning?), or upgrade my iMac to a more recent one with a 3T HD. What would you do and what's the most cost effective solution? If I do use an external HD I'm just concerned about running into problems using it to stream AirPlay content and also backing it up (I'm using TimeMachine on a dedicated drive and then running Super Duper on a second drive occasionally). And then I'd be paying for a drive that I would outgrow once it was time to upgrade my computer. I could also replace the computer but I've still got a year-and-a-half left of my AppleCare warranty and a new computer won't have the built in CD drive that I do use quite a bit. But on the other hand I'd get the highest resale now which I could put towards a new machine. Soooo, what would you do?

Using iPhone 4s overseas?

I'm traveling to South Africa for a month. I once made a mistake and made a cell call in the USA back to Canada. Coast me $240... roaming charges!!! Won't do that again.

So, what should I do/not do when traveling to stay in touch with the Manitoba organizations I am involved with? I can leave them a message that I may not respond for a day or two. Here's my thinking...

I will only use use my browser when I have access to free WiFi at airports, hotels, friends' homes.

I will NOT use my phone for calls local or long distance. Nor answer any calls. I'm thinking it's too expensive?

I can buy a 30 day unlimited text option for $30. That's reasonable.

What should I shut off on my phone to do the above? Any other considerations?

What setting do I shut off on my 4s or change?

Much thanks!

1st Gen white Apple TV doesn't show tabs for Movies or TV shows anymore

Hello,

the last few days I've noticed that the last tab on the left is Music, TV Shows and Movies are no longer there. I've reset the box and still no luck. It is hacked but I've never had this issue before. I did add an Apple TV 2 to the network a few days ago (it's jailbroken too).

I suppose I can diconnect the new Apple TV to see if things return to normal on the Apple TV 1, but that wouldn't be an ideal solution.

Travis Vader charges stayed in McCann murder case

Quote:

The Crown has stayed charges against Travis Vader, who was accused of murdering Lyle and Marie McCann, a couple from St. Albert, Alta., who went missing four years ago and have never been found.

Crown prosecutor Michelle Doyle refused to make any comment on why the charges were stayed.

The two-week trial was scheduled to begin in April.

The McCanns were last seen on July 3, 2010, on the first day of a road trip to British Columbia. Their burned out motorhome was found two days later in the bush near Edson, Alta.

Microsoft OneNote for Mac

OneNote for Mac has just been released and I've installed it on my Mac and Devices. Since I've been an Evernote user for the last year, I am now trying to figure out how to get all my notes into OneNote. I have tried on my Windows side with html and OneNote printer, but it doesn't seem to work. I really don't want to recreate all new notebooks and copy each note individually. iPad wifi address - and privacy

Hi,

I had a question about how private ipads are with respect to their unique wifi address

To use my iPad at my work environment, I need to provide the company with the unique wifi address of my iPad. Otherwise I am limited with what I can access.

Once I provide IT with the wifi address, are they able to remotely monitor my usage? (Sites I visit, photo's, music, etc)

If so, can they do this at any time or only when at work? I have some co-workers who have been given corporate ipads who worry about this, and other people who refuse to bring in their personal ipads because they don't want to be tracked or have anyone looking into the iPad. Is this a legitimate concern or paranoia?

Thanks

The Text That Never Arrived

I have a buddy who was in a bad motorcycle accident last September and suffered a serious brain injury from his impact with a vehicle that turned left in front of him. He spent nearly two months in hospital and after recent tests has been deemed not fit to return to work for at least six more months. While there is no visible damage he is facing some serious issues with memory and concentration, and has been told he can no longer drive.

That noted, he has come to depend on me during weekdays to help pass the time via texting and also for rides to appointments and some shopping, etc. The good news is that he is improving all the time, although frustrated as his short term memory is his biggest issue. His long term memory is normal, but anything since the accident is gone and he retains little without writing it down.

I got a text from him three days ago, asking me why I had not answered a text he sent to me a few days before that. I responded that I had not received any such text. He insisted he had sent it and "it was't my knock on the noggin" either, he really did send it.

We both have iPhones, his a 4S and mine a 5, are both on Telus and all texting between us is via iMessage when he and I are each at our homes.

His wife brought him over for a visit yesterday and he showed me the text, clearly there on his iPhone using my number on a long thread. I searched my iPhone again and saw all of his texts except the one he referred to. I save all his texts in a single thread as well and could determine the date and time he sent it and checked the corresponding date and time on my iPhone. Nothing.

So, my question is, how can a text 'go MIA' like that? Just how reliable is texting anyway? Any others have this type of experience?

Killed 4 macs in a week HELP

Ok Some help PLEASE !!

Im no slouch when it comes to Macs..

I shelved a hand full of Macs for the past 4 or so years and recently attempted to put them to use again for my kids.

I tired to activate my G4 400 Tower,G4 Quicksilver, G4 Gigabit and iMac LCD 17" G4 400.

G4 400 Tower

Has a Dual 500 processor in it (also tried with original 400)

Will on occasion boot from 10.4 on a new install on a empty (1) partition drive then stall

Will partially install (from DVD) 10.4 onto a empty drive but stalls always.

Removed and installed original and different RAM

Tried different HD and have removed everything from the Tower non essential.

Boots to desktop on occasion then allows you do do one thing then freezes.

Same on G4 Quicksilver, G4 Gigabit and iMac LCD 17"

I also have a daily used Mac Mini that died at same time

Mini was isolated to boot from external CD and external HD and it still froze.(removed upper HD and DVD board and booted… it started the Leopard installer and attempted to install it on the External FW drive but stalled..multiple attempts.

iMac LCD 17" 400mhz (with the neck)

Fires up and actually works the longest on internal HD and internal DVD works when it wants but again freezes randomly.

I killed them all in one week. Im very worried I have some kind of hardware issue bug or something…

ITs not normal to kill this many devices in a single week.

Or did I let them sit too long on a shelf and the daily used Mini just had its time and it was coincidence.

Any comments are welcome..

I can only figure motherboard… but I'm at a loss for words..

I killed my entire fleet less my 27" iMac… My mini was my second daily device.

Best Jailbraek for original Apple TV?

Does Canada Owe Eritrea an Apology?

From this CBC story on May 29, 2013.

Eritrean diplomat ordered out of Canada after 'tax' on ex-pats - Politics - CBC News

Quote:

The head of the Eritrean Consulate in Toronto has been ordered to leave Canada in the wake of reports that said Semere Ghebremariam O. Micael has been involved in soliciting a "diaspora tax" from Eritreans in Canada.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued a news release Wednesday that said he has taken steps to expel Micael and he must leave by noon ET on June 5.

"Today’s actions speak for themselves," Baird said. "Canada has repeatedly made clear to Eritrea to respect international sanctions and Canadian law."

Even as this was happening Canada was negotiating the worst possible terms for American Ex-Pats living in Canada. Worse yet they allowed the IRS to define American so many 100% Canadian citizens are vulnerable.

The Eritrean tax was 2% of income. The form a single page so simple a child could fill it in. There are no penalties for refusing to pay it which means it really is voluntary.

OTOH the US was demanding that the 90% of Americans living abroad who were completely unaware that they were supposed to be filing US taxes and F(u)BARS, should participate in what was called the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program. Their reward for participating was that the IRS would limit its depredations on their accounts to 27% and label them as criminals. This even though in most cases they would owe nothing or almost nothing in back taxes. The 27% comes in the form F(u)BAR penalties. The alternative is that once FATCA is in place the IRS will go after everything.

Unfortunately even that 27% is deceptive. Say you had $50,000 in a GIC. It matures and goes into your checking account. You then moved that over to another financial institution. The penalty would be 27% on each of those three accounts or 81% or $40,500 of that $50,000. BTW this is what Screature was referring to when he suggested CanAms become IRS compliant.

The entire point of FATCA is to enable the F(u)BAR extortion scheme.

So the poll question is this:

Since Canadian Government has decided to enable the IRS extortion scam by signing the IRS FATCA IGA should John Baird apologize to Eritrea ?

Baking your Mac.

Fix A MacBook By Baking It In A Hot Oven

Nothing feels more counter-intuitive than shoving a broken MacBook Pro that cost thousands of dollars into a preheated oven. But it might be the best last-ditch effort available if your laptop won't start.

* * *

The basic idea behind it is that your MacBook's system has failed because of broken connections in the logic board. By heating up the whole board, you liquefy the solder joints that broke and they cool back in place once you take it out of the oven.

Although there have been hundreds of successful bakes reported, there's no guarantee that cooking your 'Book will provide a long-term fix.

trouble with simple Font Formatting in Mail

Never really used the built in Font Formatting in Mail until today. Really disappointed in what I've experienced in just selecting text and clicking the Bold Text button. Yes, the type turns bold, but when clicking again, it remains bold. The same issue with italic and underline. Neither of them will return to regular text with the 2nd click.

Wordpress.org - best way to start?

Hi folks,

I'm finally going to redesign my website.

It was done by me using a template in RapidWeaver a long time ago.

Technology has changed and I'm looking at using Wordpress.org

Current site is hosted by hostpapa.

In reading the instructions, I can install WP to my hostpapa site.

But I question it for 2 reasons:

1. I've read I can created a folder to store the newly created WP, but I may still screw that up and don't want to overwrite my current site.

2. I'd prefer to create it on my Mac in WP then upload it when it's done. Apparently, I can create a local server to test it?

I found a premium theme which looks very customizable which I'll install afterwards.

So, my questions to you:

Am I nuts to try and create it on my Mac then upload via FTP when done?

Or should I just install on the hostpapa server and go from there?

Is there a 'best practice' or 'common procedure' to install WP?

I don't travel much so I wouldn't be updating the site except for an occasional blog which I understand can be done with an app.

Thanks in advance. I'd love to hire a web developer to do it for me, but I simply don't have the funds at this point in time. Plus, I don't mind trying something new - just a bit confused on how to start! lol

Cheers,

keebler

Trying to restore Time Mach Backup

Hi

Lost my HD a few weeks back and now I'm trying to restore a Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant.

I have 2 external discs, one has the time machine backups.

When I select the option from a time mach backup the next window shows 3 disks, all are named the same and look the same.

I have a Lacie 1TB and WD 1TB external and a W/D 1TB in the computer.

How do I tell which disc to select for the T/M back up?

Thanks..

Bose QuietComfort - 110-220v compatible?

For anyone here who owns Bose QuietComfort 3 or 15 headphones, can you tell me if the battery charger will wrk both on 110 and 220v or are they limited to 110v?

I presume the QC15 does not come with any chargers, so I may charge the batteries with any charger, including 220v. But, the QC3's charger is built-in and comes with flat-prongs for 110v. My question is, can I just use a plug-adapter (flat-to-round) and plug it into a 220v supply or do I need to buy a step-down transformer?

Thanks and cheers

EMail Dilemma

OK brain trust. I'm sure I'm missing something simple here but humour me and if you can help me, please do so. I used to have an email account with Telus. Its been years since I used it and I no longer remember the password, however I discovered that I had used this account with iTunes years ago and need to access this account to unlock some purchases (I may have the wrong wording but I think you get the drift). Anyways, when I contact Telus to get a new password, they send it to the old Telus email address. Which I can't log into since I don't have the password. What am I missing here? Bobby

Email service

I have not been able to find any answer to this question other than it relates to free email services such gmail.

We are closing our businesses, hoping to retire, this means closing our domain and loosing our email addresses. We could continue to pay for the domain but that does not seem to make sense.

The question is what are the best email providers, not just free email providers?

Lots of good and bad about free stuff, most dealing with data gathering, but virtually nothing out there about pay as you go sites.

Is there such a thing? How good are they? Does anyone have experience?

Thanks, Norm

iMac 2.4 GHZ getting a new hard drive, but....

...I was told, by a local authorized Apple shop that my iMac (2.4 GHZ, iMac 8,1) will experience poor performance by going from the stock OEM 250 Hitachi to a 1 TB drive.

Huh?

The tech said that, by installing the larger drive, my machine would be laggy and it would best to install the 1 TB in a case and attach via USB rather than install it within the machine.

Seeing that the OEM drive is dying, I thought going the 1 TB route would be ok.

The drive I have to install is:

Newegg.ca - Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Thoughts?

MacBook Pro 15 love

Wow...

It's been a long time since I last posted something here....

I recently scored the following for a killer deal:

MacBook Air, 1,1, 1.6 GHZ

MacBook Pro, 4,1 2.4 GHZ

The Air I got for $250, and the Pro I received for FREE!

Now, both needed some work:

- the Air needed a new hard drive, so I installed this:

Kingspec 1 8" ZIF CE 128GB SSD FOR Macbook AIR 1st REV A1237 Toshiba Satellite | eBay

I found the ZIF connector VERY loose once it was plugged into the new ZIF SSD. In fact, whenever I placed the Air in my backpack to head to work, inevitable, the machine would not boot to the friendly Apple symbol. Rather, the Air reported no hard!

Solution: I removed the little black tape covering the connector to the OEM drive and placed it on top of the ZIF connector, then reinstalled. No problems ever since.

The Air needs new hinges though, which are on order. This machine is quite easy to qork on thanks to:

iFixit: The free repair manual

The MacBook Pro: the machine's hard drive was dead, and installing a new one was easier than I thought, despite stories about how difficult it was to remove the upper case. The lower case was in brutal shape, so I ordered a newer, less beat-up case of eBay and had it installed by a local Mac repair shop (way too arduous a task for me!).

After installing a fresh OS, I was surprised how fast this machine performed. 2.4 GHZ is a relatively common speed in this house (Mac-wise, LOL!) as all our home Macs sport that processor. Now the "M" and "O" keys don't work. Very odd.

People say that Macs are brutal to work on, but I love the challenge! (save for that bottom case).

Russia invades/puts boots on the ground in Ukraine...

Why aren't we talking about this?

It is probably one of the biggest issues of recent geopolitical times and yet here we have been silent on the subject.

I could easily cite over 100,000 columns, forum posts, blogs posts, tweets and texts etc. on the subject worldwide...

...but that would take way too long.

So why is it with the most significant international event sine 9/11 this place has been silent on the subject thus far?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

Is it geopolitical apathy, because they are so far away or Putin will do whatever Putin wants and rest of world should stand idle?

At least the PM said this:

Quote:

"Russia's invasion of Ukraine is an act of aggression, a clear violation of Ukraine's sovereignty, and of international law," Harper said in a statement Thursday. "Canada will not recognize a referendum held in a region currently under illegal military occupation."

Good for him!

No referendum while under military occupation from a foreign power should be considered valid.

To even doubt this position goes against all international law.

Looking for a printer that can print on blank CD/DVDs

I'm ooking for a printer that can print on blank CD/DVDs.

Have an Epson RX595 which works very well but I need a second one at another location.

The other requirement would be a paper feed path that can handle heavy paper - so the feed tray would need to be in the back like on the RX 595.

Had a Brother printer with the feed tray in the front and it just couldn'd handle heavy photo paper at all since the paper has to make a 180 degree turn.

The only printer I found currently was the Epson Artisan 50 at $200

There are a few posts how to convert a Canon printer to CD/DVD printing - I actually thought that option was only disabled in the US and not in Canada, but I'm not sure now.

I'm also not crazy to search for the Canon CD tray and do the mods although that is an option.

Any suggestions?

I don't really need any other features - my main printer is an Epson WF-7520 which covers off all my other requirements quite nicely.

Trackpad Oddity Redux

I'm on a Mac Mini with a trackpad exactly like the attached screenshot.

In order to stop unwanted popup menus I was told to unclick the secondary click as shown above. A new unwanted feature; scrolling now triggers unwanted clicks — mail items are dispatched to unknown locations, unwanted URLs are launched.

I love Trackpad; it just needs to be tamed. Help!

Appreciated.

Trackpad Oddity

I'm on a Mac Mini with an Apple Trackpad which is great. Except that I keep getting popup menus, dozens of different ones, which freeze the screen until I click outside of them, thus letting me continue scrolling, whatever I was doing. See the attached for just one example.

Don't really need these popup menus at all, don't know what it is I'm doing to trigger them. Is there a way to disable these critters so they don't interrupt my work flow?

Appreciated.

Do use your iThings and laptops while they are plugged in?

I've always used my stuff while it's plugged in, but a friend was recently told that she MUST NOT use her iPod or iPhone while plugged in.

I pointed out that most upscale speakers charge the device while music is playing.

On Line Tax Preparation

Always did my own taxes until the past two years. Closing business and selling home, made it a good idea to have a pro do the preparations.

Now that life is very simple, I am looking at the online preparation sites. Not sure if I want to NetFile but would pay and print out the completed return to mail including receipts.

Noticed that there is an "app for that" for iPhone and iPad use, in the iTunes App store. Net Filing only.

Suggestions ? Best Experiences ?

Thank you
