Video help Please

I had a VCR video of a performance filmed of myself by a third party which I converted to a digital format. Process - VCR recording to DVD and then video converted.
I made 2 copies - one is mp4 format (744MB); the other is avi format (537MB).
The video quality is quite acceptable but the audio has suffered badly. It is inconsistent in volume, fading away and then coming back.
I am seeking help here. Should I use iMovie to extract the audio, attempt to adjust it in a sound editor and then paste it back to the video or is there a better way? Ideally I would like a recommendation for an application which would allow me to equalise the sound in the video. And even more ideally I would prefer not to pay big bucks should I be forced to purchase said application.
Thanks in advance

Mac Pro 3 1 third party video card options

Hey folks,

I am hoping to get some insight in regards to my options for upgrading the video card in my Mac Pro 3 1 2008. As my budget is concerned, I'd rather use an inexpensive option for this older rig.

Right now I am leaning towards the ASUS GeForce 610

Canada Computers & Electronics | Video Cards | ASUS GeForce GT 610 2GB DDR3 (GT610-2GD3-CSM) | 810 MHz Clock, 1200 MHz Memory | PCI Express 2.0, D-Sub, DVI, HDMI

What would I need to do to get this card to work? I do not mind losing the grey apple boot screen. Do I need to flash the card? I plan on using dual screen through the dvi/vga ports. I do a fair amount of video editing and this card would be an upgrade to the stock 256mb card.

Thanks for the help!

Anyone have any Safari java sites working with Sierra 10.12.2

As the subject says, has anyone have any Safari java sites working with Sierra 10.12.2??

I can't seem to get any java sites to run properly even those at the "test java" google test sites.

And specifically I can't get the Bless webcam working in Sierra.
Sony Network Camera SNC-RZ25

Not even using a virgin tester user account works.

It works with my Mavericks but Sierra seems to have killed off some stuff with it's insistence of overprotecting the user. Even when the ULR has been added to the allow security list.

Personally I've found Sierra to be a PITA to use and trying to get everything working. Spent over a week so far and still not all stuff is working.

2011 27" 2.7GHz i5 iMac 20GB RAM.

It should work but I can't find much help on the 'net.

Files From Old User Library To New User Library

My old user account became corrupted. It got so bad that the finder became so slow, it started crashing. Added a new user account, and the problem is gone. At this moment I'm transferring all personal files to my new account via the shared folder.

My question is, what is the best way to transfer files from the old user library, to the new user library?

PSA : Time Capsule and latest Sierra

FYI, if any of you have run into issues with your Time Capsules since the latest Sierra update, specifically:
  • Unable to perform a time machine backup
  • Unable to access the Time Capsule through Airport Utility

There is a somewhat easy fix:

1. Open AirPort Utility
2. Under File, select "Connect to other device" (Paraphrasing, will correct when I'm at home)
3. Enter the IP address of your Time Capsule, and its password.
4. The window displayed should have an "Update" button. Click it to install the latest firmware.

Note, the issue seems to only affect devices that have "Back to My Mac" turned on, that is on the Time Capsule itself.

Opening GIFs With Preview?

Ever since installing Sierra on my MBP, opening a gif using Preview, especially a large one with three or four hundred frames now takes about 30 seconds to open. They used to open in seconds with El Capitan. This on a mid 2015 MBP 2.8 Ghz i7 with 16 GB RAM.

Sierra was a nuke and pave install (and done for a second time to see if it changed the behaviour) and I have reset the PRAM and SMC to see if it would help. Also have run OnyX to no avail and a restart or shut down and restart does not do anything either.

Anyone else experiencing this extreme lag or have a solution to cure it?

MBP doesn't sleep automatically

Just recently, my 2010 MBP (running El Capitan) won't go to sleep when left on its own -- it has to be put into sleep manually, and sometimes it will wake from sleep on its own. This has only been happening for a few weeks, and there were no major changes to the computer at that time. It's a fairly minor issue, but I'd still like to try and resolve it.

If you have any suggestions as to what might help, I'd love to hear them. I tried resetting the SMC but it didn't seem to change anything. Another possibility is to upgrade to Sierra, but I feel like I shouldn't have to do that just to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Apple repairs question

I have to bring in my work machine, 5K iMac. I am having some issues with the screen. Will have image retention in less then a minute. Not sure if that is the screen or the logic board/gpu. It is a real pain to bring it in because as I mentioned it is my work machine. Thankfully I still have my rMBP at home I can use while it is gone for service. The question I have is does Apple do repairs on site at Apple stores or do machines always get sent away for hardware issues?

Trying to get an idea of how long I will be working on a severely downgraded system.

Zsa Zsa Gabor RIP

My favourite role for her will always be Green Acres.

Quote:

Zsa Zsa Gabor, the Hungarian actress whose self-parodying glamour and revolving-door marriages to millionaires put a luster of American celebrity on a long but only modestly successful career in movies and television, died on Sunday in Los Angeles. She was probably 99.

The cause was heart failure, her longtime publicist Edward Lozzi said.

Married at least eight times, calling everyone “Dahlink,” flaunting a diamonds-and-furs lifestyle and abetted by gossip columnists and tabloid headline writers, Ms. Gabor played the coiffed platinum femme fatale in plunging necklines in dozens of film and television roles, many of them cameos as herself. Her career, which began with the title Miss Hungary in 1936, was still going strong in the 1990s, outlasting those of her sisters, Eva and Magda, celebrities in their own right. She was the last surviving Gabor sister.

The Case of the Reappearing Notifications

Been out here maybe 1nce, since around the time we got new passwords. greetings.

so wow.

I finally upgraded to iOS 10 as I'm reluctantly now a late adopter. Faith in solid  products/builds is slowly eroding. And with just cause these days. Bummer.

But as I try to get used to the new OS (coming from 9), i find a few issues - and not being able to clear notifications is one of them. In fact, when I go to clear them, they basically just reappear. WTH is that all about? has anyone else experienced this at all??

pretty annoying.

Brand architecture??!!

Apparently it is a thing now as I read recently on LinkedIn that someone considers themselves a "brand architect".

With this (and in so many other ways) the English language is so mutable as to become utterly meaningless. You can say whatever you want, come up with your own definition and then "boom" a new word.

I think I need to start learning Mandarin or Cree so that things actually have meaning and make sense. The English language is f**ked up and the games being played by even Websters admitting a few words every year into the lexicon willy-nilly is deplorable.

I fully understand that language is ever changing but what the f**k is a brand architect? I guess it is the same thing or along the lines of a garbage engineer... who used to be called a garbageman.

iCloud syncing to Photos issue

I have a friend that has set up iCloud through her iPhone, and now that she's linking said iCloud account to her iMac, she has said that not all iCloud photos are shown in Photos.

I pointed her to the Preferences > iCloud section of Photos and told her to make sure iCloud Photo Library was selected and either "Download Original to this Mac" or "Optimize Mac Storage" and she says that she has selected the former, and that the issue remains.

-Is it possible that the downloading takes significant amounts of time?
-What might be the issue here?

Hate in Canada

Suspect in custody after women wearing hijabs threatened with noose at Edmonton LRT station

Edmonton police have a suspect in custody in connection with a possible hate crime aimed at two hijab-wearing women.

Police made the announcement Tuesday, a day after providing a photograph of the man to media.

According to police, the man, believed to be in his 60s, approached two women wearing hijabs at the University of Alberta LRT station last month, pulled a rope from his pocket, tied a noose and said, "This is for you."

The man then proceeded to sing O Canada, which was caught on video by one of the women, police said.

Archiving

Did a quick search on the reasons and purposes of archiving and didn't find much at all. What prompted me was when I received an email informing me of an update to an archiving utility. I believe Windows users like you to Zip the file before sending.....at least that's my experience. With what little compression work most utilities do, what is the actual purpose of archiving files that aren't used very frequently? Does this method somehow protect them? From my perspective, it just seems like an extra step for no reason. Any comments?

Andrew Sachs, the British actor best known as the lovable Spanish waiter Manuel on the 1970s BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died aged 86.

Sachs, who played a waiter from Barcelona on the series co-created by Monty Python star John Cleese, died on Nov. 23, his wife Melody told the Daily Mail.

Sachs, who was diagnosed with dementia four years ago, was buried in North London on Thursday.

Cable TV Is About To Be Disrupted, And The CRTC Knows It

An interesting read abou the future of TV in Canada

Quote:

IRENE BERKOWITZ
Special to The Globe and Mail

In an effort to force Canada’s telecom companies to declutter their “skinny basic” cable packages, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently announced that instead of the standard, seven-year licence, cable companies will receive a one-year renewal.

Given that cable delivery of TV is being disrupted by Internet delivery – what’s known as “over-the-top” content – could the “skinny licence renewal” be a big, fat diversion from more fundamental reasons for a one-year licence? Big disruptions tend to progress exponentially, not linearly, meaning their impact doubles every year or so. As often observed about transformative change, it happens very slowly, then all at once. In this climate, renewing TV licences for seven years could be like renewing for 128 (seven doublings of one).

Here are seven speculations about what issues might be at play in the one-year renewal, and why the CRTC might just be offering a policy version of a red herring:

More at the link.

How do I network an ethernet printer with no ethernet

Hi:

We just moved to a new house which does not have any ethernet. We are supposed to rely on WiFi.

Our Brother laser printer only talks via ethernet. My hope is I can connect the printer to my iMac with an ethernet cable and continue using it.

It appears to not be that simple.

My iMac will not talk to the printer because we are no longer connected to the Apple Router via ethernet cables. I think I somehow need to tell my iMac what the address (???) is for the
printer but have no idea what the settings might be.

Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated.

External Drives and daisy chaining

With my Synology NAS on the way, I'm thinking about my extra external hard drive enclosures which have Firewire 800, USB 2 and eSata ports. Since the Synology has USB 3 ports, it would still be limited by my enclosure's USB 2 ports. The NAS also has an eSata port, which is quite a bit faster than USB 2. My question is, can my second drive be daisy chained either through eSata or Firewire? Or, is eSata specifically designed as a one drive system and no daisy chaining permitted, either through eSata or FW?

So when I go to her App Store, there is no Mavericks in her purchased page.

No sweat, think I, I will just download it from my App Store on my machine and use a USB stick to install on hers. Done deal.

But wait. When I try to download from my purchased area, I get the notice below.

So I call Apple and they cannot help me and they tell me to go to an authorized Mac dealer and buy a copy on disk.

Surely there is a way around this? Or is there? Any suggestions appreciated.

How to "see" an iMac from a Linux machine?

I have a mid-2010 MacBookPro (17 inch) that's currently running macOS Sierra. It has 8gigs of RAM and a 1TB HDD, but it's extremely slow to boot (takes around ten minutes actually).

Also, Opera and Firefox launch immediately and run fine, but Safari, upon launch, keeps bouncing in the dock for around 5-6 minutes before it launches, and even then, beachballs for a few minutes before letting me type anything into the URL bar. And when it does let me type, it echoes even keystroke in slo motion and keeps beach balling for a long time before I am able to use Safari.

Please note this happens only with Safari. Other browsers launch immediately and are usable immediately.

So, with all this happening, I am considering trashing macOS from that machine and install Linux Mint on it.

Now comes the issue:

I also have an iMac which has all my data and media. What I do is, I turn on the MacBook Pro, go to Finder, click on the iMac (under shared computers) and login with my ID and password, and then drag files (movies or TV shows etc.) from the iMac onto the MacBook Pro to watch in my living room.

Now, since both machines run macOS, this step is seamless. However, were I to move the MacBook Pro over to Linux, I need to know how to basically do the same thing. I would like to open my Linux MBPro, "see" the iMac, go to my folder there, and drag files onto the Linux MBPro.

I tried googling, but all the info I found are either very very old (2006, 2008 etc.) and talk about Samba etc., or talk about virtual machines on the same physical machine.

I was wondering if some of you might be able to give me some pointers on how to accomplish this, or at least direct me to some proper documentation or instructions on how to do this.

Thanks and cheers

considering Time Capsule....

I've been thinking about the convenience of using Time Capsule to keep a time Machine backup without having to hook up an external drive all the time. Can't help but wonder if there's any new generations of TC on the horizon, since the last one was released June, 2013.

Any users here making much use of the TC? Can one easily install a larger drive in them?

From what I understand, you can do the initial backup over ethernet and then let wi-fi do its thing on the rest. Is this correct?

Any comments are welcome.

Lightning to USB Camera Cable with Dragonfly Red & iPad, iPhone issue

I'm using the Dragonfly Red on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 5S, and connecting via Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.

If I nudge the cable, either headphone or Apple adapter, the music starts cutting out, slowing down and is un-listenable (I'm listening on headphones and Spotify).

I've fiddled with the Lightning connection to get the sound back to normal and it either will go back to normal, or I have to pause the music and press Play again.

Any ideas if I have a bad cable or ??? It would seem odd that my Lightning input on BOTH my iPad and iPhone are bad for this to be consistently happening.

Transfer Rate?

So is there a quick way to determine the data transfer rate when viewing video online?

Was not a concern until I cut the TV part of cable. The internet plan I have provides sufficient speed but I am worried about exceeding data limits, now that I am watching the few shows that interest me online. Sadly Shaw is about 2 days behind posting data usage so they are of limited help.

Any difference between viewing full screen and reduced size?

Another Apple Mail Sierra question

Hopefully this one is more straightforward then other issues I have had with Apple mail in Sierra.

I have a very large inbox, going back years. When I do a search it brings up the oldest email to the top first, and newest at the bottom. I want to reverse this, so when I search newest is at the top and oldest at the bottom. I am using the classic view. The sorting is fine, newest at the top, oldest at the bottom, it just does not do this when I do a search.

Is this not possible to change or have I missed a setting somewhere?

MacBook Pro 15" 8,2 - HD upgrade with data doubler - Need Clarity!

Hey guys,

I'm going to be doing some work on my MBP 8,2 15" next month including:

Swapping primary drive to SSD
Removing optical drive and adding a HDD via data doubler
New Battery

I have been reading that SATA III 6G drives are not supported/ stable / or generally don't work but what I can't tell from all of that is whether or not the drives will work, just at the 3G speeds or if they actually fail is some way.

I'm asking because the availability of 1TB HD that are 7200 rpm and SATA 3G are very limited and there are tons of options in the newer SATA 6G. If the drive work just not at top speed then I'll just get one of those but I don't want to have drives failing on me.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

Easy way to remove hard drive from 2006 iMac before trashing it

So my 2006 iMac just won't start up again. Nothing. Dead.

Because I basically used it as a media centre, I didn't often back it up but I think there's a few things on it that I wouldn't mind getting back or at least making sure nothing's on there that I'd like.

I really don't see any point in paying someone $75 to remove the hard drive to check it out, though.

All the videos/tutorials are very careful about how to remove the hard drives because the assumption is the iMac will be passed along or updated.

I'm not going to do that so I can be 'less careful' in getting it out (but not destroying the hard drive itself).

Anybody done something like this (and lived to tell the tale)?

Many thanks!

Apple mail in Sierra not showing attachment paper clip

I upgraded to Sierra on my work machine (5K iMac) on the weekend. Everything works fine, apps and all. I did notice an issue with Mail though, emails come in, but some do not show the paperclip indicating they have an attachment. Some do and some don't, it is strange. The ones that do show the paperclip though are emails that came in before I updated to Sierra. I have done all the updates for MacOS. Anyone have any idea why I don't see the paperclip for attachments? It is on for sure as I see them on old emails. It happens with all sorts of file types, from zipped files, to pdfs, to word files.

I had a friend test on his and it all came in fine. Tried in both classic and classic and default layout with same result. Also done the obvious restarting, etc.

Slow cable speed

In anticipation of cutting the TV portion of my cable, I was doing speed tests on my Shaw internet service. Turns out my 5Mbps package is delivering a pathetic 1Mbps. That's one computer hooked directly by ethernet to the modem with TV turned off.

Since I will be running 2 instead of 1 computers I had been intending to up the ante to 15 or 30 Mbps, but now I am wondering if the actual speed will show any real improvement or is this a question that service in my area is so oversubscribed that there is no hope for any real improvement.

Modem dates back to when the advertised speed was a bit over 1Mbps. Could that be the bottleneck?

What the hell, BC RCMP?

My family has / had two members serve in the RCMP. But every bloody time the RCMP shows up in the news in recent years, it's not for any kind of service that reflects well on the uniform.... WTH, BC RCMP?

Coquitlam RCMP investigating after 2 seniors dragged down stairs by officers

Coquitlam, B.C., police are investigating after a condo annual general meeting that had "gotten out of hand" culminated with RCMP officers dragging two senior citizens down a flight of stairs.

Police were called around 10:32 p.m. and told people were fighting at the meeting held at the Best Western on North Road Thursday evening.

When RCMP officers arrived, the meeting was shut down, but an elderly couple allegedly refused to leave the area.

Video shows the couple appearing to resist attempts to arrest them and subsequently being dragged down a flight of stairs to the hotel's front entrance.

The video also shows a young child, identified as the couple's grandchild, screaming, pleading with police and occasionally flailing at one of the officers.

* * *

Myung Ju Lee described in blunt terms the treatment he received from police.

"He grabbed my arm, twisted it, put it behind my back, then kicked me [down the stairs] from the second floor," he said.

"They pushed and kicked, and I rolled down, down, down ... Then he came down, pushed my chest using the knee. Several times.

"'Are you trying to kill me? Are you trying to kill me?'", I shouted," Ju Lee continued.

"And finally, at the bottom of the stairs, I was handcuffed. 'I'm not a criminal. I'm not a criminal ... I'm a senior. Why do you have me in handcuffs?'' I kept asking. They would not answer."

Ju Lee had a bruise on his cheek, while his wife had scrapes along her back. Both spent the night in hospital, and say they're shocked and angry at what happened.

Victor Kim, a condo owner in the strata, said he was motivated to film the incident because of how poorly he thought police were treating the couple.

"They're in their eighties. Grandparents. They shouldn't have handled it that way," he said.

"[It could have been solved] in a peaceful way..."
(CBC)
