Anyone use the new Canada Revenue Agency “Auto-fill my return” service

Just wondering if anyone managed to use the new “Auto-fill my return” service successfully with their income tax software this year???

I'm far from impressed and now it seems I have to start over again, at least using the TaxFreeway for Mac 2015 software, as the auto-fill just duplicated and in some cases triplicated some of my forms with my pension amounts, and even one with zero data included.

Complete waste of time IMHO!!!

I hope others had better success but sure not impressed here.

I Won An iPad Mini 4

Very inexpensive raffle ($2 a ticket, 3 for $5). Ended up winning a 64Gb iPad Mini 4. It's still in the shrinkwrap because I don't know whether to keep it or to sell it. I've got a 12" iPad Pro.

With my FileMaker development, I could keep it as a test device.

However I do know that when people win golf related prizes that are merchandise that GolfTown sells, GolfTown will provide them with a store credit if they want to 'return it' (even though it was probably not purchased through GolfTown.

Are there any dealers that sell Apple product that will do the same?

EBay insurance!!

I need some quick advice for my inland who are purchasing e trailer for $2000 on eBay. The money is being held in escrow and they just got this email from eBay requiring the pay $1000 for insurance which is refundable. Here's some of its content. Any reason for concern?

Due to the high vehicle value amount, under the federal law eBay has to report this transaction. In order for us to initiate the shipping process, the buyer needs to insure the item. The insurance and forwarding taxes will be refunded to you after the inspection period ends via cashier check. This requirements is mandatory in order to complete the transaction.

Portable Monitor for MacBook Air

Greetings Mac brain-trust. I'm running a mid-2011 11" Macbook Air that is perfect for my road-warrior duties. However, there are times when I want to display something to a client or small group and the 11-inch screen is just too small. I tried using a pico-projector and found the image typically washed-out or a decent projector either too big or requiring a screen. So, I've been considering a light-weight portable monitor. I've been looking at an "ASUS MB168B 15.6" HD Portable USB-Powered Monitor" but was wondering if anybody in ehMac-land might have any experience or advice in this area. It appears that this particular model is backward-compatible to the USB2 port on my computer, but again, any advice most appreciated. Bobby

Ipad mini2 Screen repair, now no GPS?

Recently I dropped my out of warranty iPad mini 2 and shattered the screen, so I took it to iRepair to be fixed. Took a few days and a few back and forths (I guess these devices are NOT so easy to repair after all) I finally got it back with a working screen.

I use my iPad as a GPS, so after mounting it in my car, I noticed that Waze couldn't find my location. Neither could Google Maps, Apple Maps or any OTHER Map app. Location services are on.

I've reset the device three+ times, and even done a "reset all settings" but STILL no GPS signal. Is it even remotely possible that a screen repair could have damaged the GPS in the unit? I've done everything but a nuke and restore.

Ideas?

Movie Audio question

this is somewhat complicated: thanks for bearing with me. Recently, I acquired a copy of Mel Brooks' Movie on blu ray,. History of the world part 1. Knowing how much I enjoyed the movie in the past, I watched it again. What's this? the sound, it's anemic and lousy. Maybe I can fix that??? so i extracted the soundtrack (6 Channels) and I think I'm done with it ( I used VLC to extract the audio). So. How can I go about getting this thing together and then getting it into a form I can use to reattach to the movie with iMovie, or some such thing? I also have a copy of MKV tools which I found to be also quite helpful

thanks

IMO it is some combination of both that will lead to "correctness".

In other words without some form of "common ground" we will always be fighting each other for ever.

2016 Becel Ride for Heart

Last year's ride was soooo much fun. It was cold. It poured rain. But it was extremely satisfying and I must be a glutton for punishment because I’m riding again this year!

I’ve registered for the Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and I’m raising money to help Canadians live longer fuller, lives.

As some of you may know, I lost my own brother Kevin almost 8 years ago to heart disease. Theresa’s (my partner) Mom passed away this past August. She was a 10 year stroke survivor.

This past January, thanks to the generosity of my previous sponsors I had the pleasure of attending a VIP appreciation night. One of the speakers was Dr. Dan Selchen, a researcher who is part of the ESCAPE Trial breakthrough, where a new treatment represents a revolution in stroke care and cuts death rate in half. His team’s efforts are funded in part by the monies raised from the Ride for Heart.

There was an added personal connection to meeting Dr. Selchen. It turned out that he was the doctor that treated Theresa’s Mom when she had her stroke 10 years ago.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,500 by making a donation today! It’s fast, secure and easy. To support me in my ride, please click on the link below to reach my personal fundraising page.

With your support, the Heart and Stroke Foundation can continue to:

Empower Canadians to make positive changes and prevent disease
Save lives at the moment a health emergency strikes
Promote recovery, where and when it’s needed
Thank you so much for your support. Every little bit helps Canadians live longer, fuller lives.

Sincerely,
Steve Smith

Airdrop problems

Hello group, I have a Mac Mini and MBP that are both on the same network. When trying to use Airdrop, my MBP finds the Mac mini but the Mac mini does not recognize the MBP. I have rebooted both machines but still have the same problem. I am trying to airdrop a file from the Mac mini to the MBP. The Mac mini will recognize my iPad and i have been successful in using the airdrop feature in the past. Any ideas where the problem may be? As always thank you in advance for the help. Cheers and beers to all.:)

Wake on WAN and Rogers and D-Link 880L?

Hello,
With my two previous ISPs I configured my old D-Link router to wake my Mac Pro 3,1 when I was away from home. I am now with Rogers. I have switched the Hitron CGN3 to bridge mode, and have a D-Link DIR-880L ac router. I am able to wake on Lan, and my dyn account works because I use it to connect to a security cam I have on my network.

I can't for the life of me wake the Mac while on another network.

Has anyone been able to do this?

Thanks

Prince is dead. 57 years young.

Music icon Prince dead at age 57 at Paisley Park

Prince, the superstar singer-songwriter known for his incredible musicianship and a cavalcade of award-winning hits, has died at the age of 57, according to a publicist.

Authorities in Chanhassen, Minn., responded to a medical emergency call from Prince's famed home recording studio Paisley Park on Thursday morning. The crime lab and medical examiner were also called to the scene.

The singer postponed several shows in Atlanta earlier this month amid reports he had been battling a nagging flu for several weeks, but delighted fans — including singer Janelle Monae — at a rescheduled performance.

Last Friday, the singer-songwriter was rushed to an Illinois hospital with his private plane making an emergency landing so he could get treatment. He was released hours later. The next day, he was seen by fans riding his bicycle around his neighbourhood and hosted a "dance party" at Paisley Park.

Prince had been travelling as part of his solo Piano and a Microphone tour, which included gigs in Toronto and Montreal in late March.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, the Grammy-winning artist was known for such hits as Purple Rain, Kiss, Little Red Corvette, The Beautiful Ones, Raspberry Beret, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Diamonds and Pearls and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.

Apple's New Pink MacBook

Quote:

Apple's new MacBook feels 25 percent faster and 100 percent more pink

Depending on the lighting, the rose gold version of Apple's new, slightly faster MacBook looks either kind of bronze or incredibly pink. Sitting here on my desk next to last year's space gray version, it's so vibrant it looks almost like I would get an electric zap of energy if I touched it.

The speed improvement on the inside are not quite as electric. Apple gave us the 1.2Ghz Intel Core m5 version to test, and though I can notice the difference, it's small enough that it's not an easy or automatic upgrade from the previous MacBook. I ran a few benchmark tests and have been poking around for the last twenty minutes or so — nothing too crazy — and here's the long and short of it. Geekbench 3 pegs the speed improvements on raw processor operations at around 20 percent, but disk-write speeds using Blackmagic saw bigger improvements, as much as 80 or 90 percent faster (reading speeds look like smaller, incremental improvements). Overall, the thing feels about 25 percent faster to me.

default (rebuilt) photo library taking up big chunk of HD

Running out of disk space, I used Grand Perspective to find what was using up the most space on my hard drive and it shows default (rebuilt) 2.photolibrary and default (rebuit)2.photoslibrary are the main culprits. There's also the Photo library, itself taking up a big chunk.

I'm not sure when or how I ended up with these 2 rebuilt photo libraries, but now I'm wondering how I can compare the photos on either one and to the non-rebuilt one so that I can remove, or even delete them. If I were to move the Photo Library to an external drive, what would be the best way of doing it so that Photo, or iPhoto, would know where to look for them?

Problems after 10.11.4 Upgrade?

I did the El Cap. 10.11.4 upgrade a few days ago, and since then, I've noticed that Safari doesn't play videos embedded in some websites.

As an example, I check the BBC News website often - they embed videos within the news pages.

They used to work - now they don't if I access the site through Safari, but they do work if I access it through Chrome. The videos are flash driven - maybe the upgrade finally stopped Safari using Flash - Steve's fondest wish achieved at last!

Anybody have a similar problem?

Cheers

#42

I know that I am early in this posting since it was on April 15, 1947, that Jack Robinson made his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. On April 15th, 1997, Robinson's jersey number, #42, was retired throughout Major League Baseball. In 2009, all uniformed personnel (players, managers, coaches, and umpires) wore number 42 on April 15th. And the tradition shall continue this Friday.

As an avid New York Giant baseball fan, I was allowed to boo any and all Dodgers ................ except for Jack Robinson. My mother felt that he was too important and courageous a man to boo. Luckily, I had the opportunity to see him play in both Ebbets Field and The Polo Grounds.

Support resource for all things OSX

Hey ehMacers,

Just want to give a shout-out to the excellent resource for all your Mac challenges: MacinTouch. It's a daily compilation of issues and suggested fixes provided by Mac users.

This is the link to the El Capitan main page, but you can go back to the root and climb out on another branch to your OS or issue.

Often I'll find potential fixes (or at least commiseration) from fellow Mac users here, if I can't find it in Apple's own User discussion forum.

Would "Attempted Murder" be a more Appropriate Charge?

It would seem that American justice is almost as corrupt as American politics. The good news in this case is that the victim was eventually set free. However the corrupt prosecution could have led to his death. Disbarment seems far too light a punishment for the Texas prosecutor.

Texas Prosecutor Disbarred for Sending Innocent Man to Death Row

Quote:

(Newser) – A Texas man spent nearly two decades in prison—more than half of that time on death row—before being exonerated in 2010. But Anthony Graves didn't simply celebrate his freedom: He went after the prosecutor who put him behind bars, resulting in Charles Sebesta's disbarment by the state licensing board, Reuters reports. In response to Graves' original January 2014 complaint, the Texas State Bar yanked Sebesta's law license last June, declaring that he had taken part in "prosecutorial misconduct," as the Dallas Morning News puts it. On Monday, a panel appointed by the Texas Supreme Court upheld that ruling. The state Board of Disciplinary Appeals found that Sebesta presented false testimony and hid evidence that could have helped free Graves, who was wrongly convicted of setting a 1992 fire that killed six people.

For Sale Mac Pro 1,1 upgraded with quad-core CPUs

For Sale
$600

Originally a "MacPro 1,1" equipped with two Xeon dual-core X5150 2.66 GHz CPUs

EveryMac.com

I upgraded it with two Xeon quad-core X5355 2.66 GHz CPUs. Thus is it now an eight-core machine.

Firmware has been upgraded to support the eight-cores so the machine now reports as a "MacPro 2,1" in "About This Mac".

"About This Mac" reports the following

Code:

Model Name:        Mac Pro
Model Identifier:        MacPro2,1
Processor Name:        Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:        2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors:        2
Total Number Of Cores:        8
L2 Cache (per processor):        8 MB
Memory:        12 GB
Bus Speed:        1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version:        MP21.007F.B06
SMC Version (system):        1.7f10
Serial Number (system):        RM7290VEUQ2
Hardware UUID:        00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F207EB48

Original GeForce 7300 GT video card.

12 GB RAM. All modules have heatsinks.

Apple original OS X 10.5.6 install DVD and Mac Pro Applications DVD included.

NO HARD DRIVES. No keyboard. No mouse.

All 4 hard drive sleds with screws are included. Some of the rubber grommets that held the screws in the sleds have disintigrated long ago. Thus, the screws are loose and will be packaged in a bag.

The highest version of OS X that will run naturally this machine is 10.7.5. I ran 10.6.8 with the 7300 GT video card. You will need a more powerful video card to run newer versions of OS X.

There are hack guides on the internet detailing how to install newer versions of OS X if you wish. The machine will also run Windows and Linux.

Will ship to any Canadian address at buyer's expense. Reply with your postal code for a shipping cost.

Paypal and Interac E-Transfer accepted. Buyer must have at least 1 year of history on ehMac.ca

Is low RAM still an issue with an SSD?

I'm in the process of advising/buying a new Mac notebook for three different people.

I know I need to find out what they wish to use their Mac for but I have a general question.

For one - all of them want a notebook with a 13-inch screen - some like a MBa others a MBp
A lot of the newer configurations by Apple only include 4 GB of RAM which is often soldered in and can't be expanded except when placing the original order.

I know upgrading three of the existing MBp's in the family from 4GB of RAM to 16 GB of RAM made a huge difference in the responsiveness - but those were 2012 MBp's with a standard hard drive.

Does a new Mac with an SSD drive eliminate the need to run more than 4GB of RAM since access times to the SSD will be much faster.

Any practical experience in that respect?

Thanks.

Pretty Much No One Needs An Apple Watch

Quote:

I didn’t preorder the Apple Watch, or stand in line the day it came out. But I read every article about it, and when someone suggested that it would complement my “personal cloud,” I eventually felt compelled to buy one. I wear it every day, possibly out of determination to get something out of the $400 I spent on it, but when someone asks me if I think they should buy one, I usually tell them no.

The Apple Watch was released April 24, 2015. Nearly a year later, it’s become apparent that there really isn’t much of a need to get one.

The smartwatch was the first entirely new product that Apple had released in five years, the first launched under CEO Tim Cook’s oversight—as well the first product in decades launched by Apple without the direction of Steve Jobs behind it.
Details at the link.

A year after its launch, it’s now clear that pretty much no one needs an Apple Watch - Quartz

So I took the plunge to update to El Capitan as I kept getting the stupid update box, I figured why not get the latest and greatest... it turns out the latest and greatest also means my trustworthy Canon MX300 no longer works...there are no drivers for it.

Thank you Apple.

Is there a way to easily downgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite? Or rather, upgrade?

Question about iPhone replacement at Apple Store

I had an iPhone 6S that was locked to Rogers which I purchased a few months ago. I recently got it unlocked by Rogers before I was heading overseas for a trip.

Yesterday, I noticed there was a weird spot on my screen that's especially visible on white backgrounds.

If I go to the Apple Store and they need to exchange my phone, will they give me another phone locked to Rogers which I will need to get unlocked again or will they give me an unlocked phone?

Thanks!

Had to hold power button to power down and rebooted several times.
Now it will not boot up at all past the gray screen with the apple logo. The gear icon spins non-stop. And I have to hard power down to start up again.

I didn't back up this important keynote presentation to a back up drive. (Don't go there, please!) I had emailed an earlier version to the customer as a converted powerpoint so they could see it. But power point substitutes fonts and looks crappy. I need to present with keynote file from on my MBP.

I googled the problem and have made numerous attempts to fix the problem. Here is what HAS NOT worked when I started up -
- Safe mode.
- Reset P Ram - Command/P/R keys held at start up. Gives me a gray screen only with gears spinning for 5-10 minutes.
- Shift+Command+V keys - Gets me a round circle with a slash symbol in a black screen with lots of white text.
Bottom line says "still waiting for root device" which keeps repeating until I power down again.
- Command+S keys. Gets me a black screen with white text. And "still waiting for root device" text line at bottom of screen.
- Option D for hardware test(?). Says "internet recovery" on a gray screen and nothing happens further.
- Command+Option+P+R keys. let it chime 10 times. Stays at gray screen. No results.
- Tried booting from a Snow Leopard Install CD by holding C key at start up. Wanted to use Disk Utility to repair disk. Only see gray screen and no start up CD. I can hear the CD winding up and winding down. But can't access it.
Had to power on with Eject (arrow) key to eject CD.

I'm hoping this is a software issue and not a hard drive failure. The spinning gear can't find what it has to? Running out of time! :-(

HELP!

Adobe Flash...

Can someone update me on what the best plan of action is with this. I see Adobe has warned to install the latest updates.
What's the latest best course of action for us Mac owners? Update or not have flash at all on our machines?

Best CDN service in Canada?

I am not sure whether it is the right place to post this question. I own two websites that are built using WordPress. Both the websites contain thousands of high quality images. So it takes much time to load the pages completely. One of my friend advised me to use any CDN services to deliver the images. But I don't have much knowledge about CDN services. I already have a cloud hosting account on Stage2Data. Is that enough to do this? Please let me know your ideas.

HP Laserjet 1000 and OS X (10.9.5 at least...)

Hey folks,

In my office I've never needed a printer, but with new job responsibilities recently added, it's become an occasional necessity. Rather than waste resources, I hit up our tech person to see what they might have laying around.

In our storage room we found three old HP LaserJet 1000 USB-only printers. Score!

Brought the one down that seemed to have the most toner in the cartridge and plugged it into my iMac. No drivers available under 10.9. So I set off on an internet excursion to see what the chances are that this could be brought back to life.

It took damn near an entire day of messing around in terminal and downloading drivers. I used the very helpful guide put together by Christopher Whalen. But by the end of working hours yesterday, I could see the printer, add it as my default printer, but upon sending data to it, it gave me either "Cannot send data to the printer" or "Printer Not Connected" errors.

I gave up and went home, determined to start again today.

So for the past 90 minutes or so I've been going through the steps from yesterday, confirming that all is where it should be, and trying to figure this out. I also stumbled across a link to the HP 3.1 Printer Drivers in an Apple Support forum and downloaded those (another half-gig).

Before I could get the new drivers installed, though, I had an idea... this old LaserJet model doesn't even have a power button - just a power cord and it's always-on. So I power-cycled the printer, and... the damn thing works! That step was left out of Christopher's guide.

So - I'm currently printing. I've saved the HP drivers just in case, but haven't installed 'em.

Posted for anyone else who may run into this situation and not want to have to buy a new printer.

Suggestions for a tank simulator game

I'm looking for a simple tank sim. I haven't had one since the 80's when MacAttack was on my old 512Ke. Not really interested in the online stuff or in app purchase stuff, just a simple point and shoot tank game. Any ideas? Thanks!

Use of SD card to expand internal storage?

Is anyone using an SD card or one of these (or equivalent)

to increase the storage on a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

I'm interested in any downsides other than the obvious ones - ie transfer speeds and the card sticking out physically.

I need to replace a 13-inch 2011 MacBook Pro (16GB RAM, 500GB HD) with either a 13-inch MBa or a 13 inch MBp but don't want to spend the money on a 512 GB SSD sinc I don't need the HD speed

"This call will be recorded for quality assurance..."

Today I received an unwanted telemarketing call from a financial institution. Before they could tell me what they were trying to sell, the woman told me "This call will be recorded for quality assurance..." I told her that since she was making the call, I wanted her to turn off the recording device before she went any further. She told me that she could not do that so I told her I could not take the call.

After a few bewildering moments, she had the decency to say goodbye and hang up.

Unbelievable that they would expect me to agree to having an incoming call recorded.

For Sale Apple iPad Mini 64GB LTE ***AS IS***

I'm selling an Apple iPad Mini 64GB LTE. It is space gray and comes with a grey Apple Smart Cover and rear snap case for protection, which is cracked at the top.

This iPad was a warranty replacement, wear and tear is minimal. I would rate it a 9.5/10 cosmetically.

The only issue with this device is that at random moments, the screen has a mind of its own, swapping through pages back and forth. There is no pattern to when this happens. It can work awesome for days but then completely go nuts. Not sure if it's hardware or software. As a result this is being sold ***AS IS***

Will come with the Smart Cover, back cover, charger and cable.

By Scarborough Town Centre on weekdays, in Woodbridge at Major Mac and 400 on evenings and weekends.
Let me know if you have any questions. Email only please: maximusbibicus@gmail.com

Thanks

£120 code cracker that can unlock an iPhone in six hours

£120 code cracker that can unlock an iPhone in six hours: so hands up, FBI, why did it take you FOUR months to access jihadi's phone? | Daily Mail Online
Quote:

An investigation by The Mail on Sunday found the gadget, sold openly on the internet, could be used to gain access to private and confidential details stored on Apple iPhones, including photographs, emails, contact details and call histories.
Using the device – called an IP Box – this newspaper was able to break the passcode of an Apple iPhone 5C, the model that America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation had been fighting to access in order to gain information about a terrorist massacre.

iPhone 4 WIFI broken?

Hi there,

I have an iPhone 4 that I'm considering selling, but before I do, I want to diagnose a problem it seems to be having. I don't want to sell it to someone and surprise them that, uhoh... the WIFI is broken!

The problem: It sees no WIFI networks. When I go to what should be a full list of neighbourhood networks, including my home, work, friends networks (I've tried in multiple locations where I know that networks are available and working), the list comes up empty.

The model: MC605C/A

Is it possible that the internal WIFI component spontaneously broke?

Do you still have an iPad with an iPhone 6s Plus?

Hi all, I just bought an iPhone 6s Plus yesterday. In the few hours of using it, I'm wondering if I still need my iPad since the size is similar. I have the iPad air2 (not the mini). I can still return my phone for the regular 6s...has anyone else grappled with such a decision?

I have one app I use for work and it's now works on both devices.
