iPhone GPS

I'm a motorcyclist who can't afford a dedicated biker GPS like the Garmin Zuma. I'd like to use my iPhone 6 with either Apple or Google maps while riding, but I'm worried about data usage. Is it possible to set up a route on either app while online, and then have playback with sound while I'm riding?
