Macbook Air ate some Syrup

My daughter appears to have done in her 13" Macbook air. She says she spilled some Maple Syrup in the hinge area. (She is not a Kid )Took it to a local MAC retailer's repair dept and they say it is completely done and full of syrup.. No useable parts even (They say connecters could not be cleaned even??. I have a mothballed 2011 Air that has some keyboard issues, but otherwise works. I lent it to her and she tells me she cannot update it to access her Google drive. Can a 2011 be refreshed to run current stuff? New operating systems possible? Might there be parts to upgrade the 2011. using her 2014 ?

Advice on how to proceed appreciated. Can Syrup wreck "Everything"
