For Sale FREE - 2011 iMac memory (4 x 4 Gb)

My 27 inch iMac failed, it has a bad mother board. The Apple service centre told me they can attempt to fix it but they did not believe their efforts were going to be successful. I opted to pull the HD, the memory and order a new iMac.

I will mail the 4 memory sims to anyone who wants them. They were purchased from OWC https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memo...1/DDR3_21.5_27 in or around Nov. 2011. The product number on them is >OWC13333DDR3S4GB<.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

iTunes does not see iPad or iPhone

I have an iPad Mini with fingerprint and an iPhone 7+. Today I wanted to drop in a little movie clip I had onto my iPad but noticed it was not showing my 2 connected devices in iTunes like usual. I updated to High Sierra about 2 weeks ago, not sure if I have checked since then. Both iOS devices have latest updates. How do I get iTunes to see the devices again? I did the usual stuff, restarted everything, disconnected devices, unplugged from USB and tried different USB port on my 5K iMac.

Cannot figure this out or what could have caused this to happen. The only thing I recently did was delete an iPhone backup under devices in iTunes preferences.

Sending SMS internationally through Message app

I talked to my carrier today but the rep sounded like she didn't really know what she was talking about, so I didn't trust her answer.

When I'm traveling internationally, and I use the Messages app on my MacBook Pro to send a message to an Android device, will I be charged a texting rate?

The rep said that as long as I'm connected to WiFi, I won't be. But that sounded fishy to me, since SMS is independent of WiFi I thought... and if sending to an Android device, iMessage is not even available.

Any thoughts?

Data Usage with Hotspot

Since updating to iOS 12, I’m seeing data usage spikes I’ve never seen before, specifically when linking my iPad to my iPhone Hotspot. I had to add data halfway through my month and it looks like it will run out before my billing cycle is up. My usage habits have not changed at all. I took it up with Bell Mobility and they told me to speak with Apple about it. I really don’t want to spend $40 plus more a month just for updating to iOS 12. Has anyone else noticed an increase in data usage, especially when using Hotspot?

Hard drive space not changing after deleting

I recently moved to High Sierra and it has been a bit buggy but I am getting by. I did notice something that my hard drive space has been going down so I decided to clear up some space. Deleting some big files, empty the trash and nothing, in fact it looks like I have a bit less space then I did before.

With Mojave out now I decided to delete my virtual machine that had the Mojave Beta in which I was doing some testing. This was around 60 gigs in size so expected to see something for sure. Again nothing.

What is going on that I am not seeing changes when deleting files, BIG files? Does it take a while for some reason for the OS to see the newly freed space and report it? Or is this a bug on my computer alone?

iOS tricks

That it might be good to start a thread of what “tricks” iOS users make use of that many are unaware of.
I just came across this one day that will help immensely with insertinthe cursor to edit text rather than trying numerous times to tap in the right spot to get the cursor to. This has always been a frustration for me.

Select the area of text to edit, tap and hold the space key until all the keys turn blank. The keyboard now turn into a trackpad to where you can drag the cursor to its spot. I love it!

Any more?

How to get rid of Adobe Flash on a website

I got involved with an organization that run a few older websites which have incorporated Adobe Flash for audio and video streaming.
The right thing to do at the time, but technology marches on and now users are complaining that they no longer want to use flash or in some cases, like with iOS, can't even use flash.

The rganization is a not-for-profit one, use of the website and the audio and video streaming is free.

So I'm looking for suggestions what can be done at minimum cost to make the audio and video streaming independent of flash but compatible with the typical ways people access streaming using PCs, Macs, Android and iOS phones.

One option would be to recode the site using HTML5 (it's using HTML4 now) which has players included, but that sounds rather labour intensive and thus costly.
I haven't come across an automated method, ie software program, that would do that.
Is there some way to just replace the "flash related" code in HTML4 on that site with different HTML4 code that allows streaming without flash on the computer, something that also works on the iPhone?
Are there other options for iPhone users specifically to play these streaming files?
Pretty much all files are audio, so a solution for audio alone would be a huge step forward.

ehmac site using excessive memory??

Keep getting this safari warning that ehmac is using excessive memory and closing it will make my browsing better (not the exact wording).

Is something wrong with ehmac? It does feel a bit sluggish at times when typing a post, I do not get that on any other forum.

Safari 12 disables extensions, now I see ads :(

Just updated Safari, and it disabled all ad blockers and tracker blockers. Now I see ads in all the webpages and it is irritating.

Safari says it disables extensions because they slow the system down; how about the ads themselves - don't they slow the system down?

Yes I know I can use some other browser, but I happen to be among the few who actually prefers Safari!

Bummer.

Cheers

Comparison shopping

Was trying to fix a malfunctioning microwave oven and the part I needed is a specific door switch--easy install.

Purchased as a microwave oven part, I could buy it on Amazon Canada for $148.10 each. A local parts supplier was offering a pair for $71 plus $16 delivery. A hole-in-the wall parts place I regularly use was selling the identical switch for... $3.95.

I find it amazing that in an Internet-enabled age, such price disparities are still common.

Massachussets: Massive series of natural gas explosions

Massachusetts explosion: Multiple suspected gas blasts and fires across North Boston cause mass evacuations

Multiple suspected gas blasts and fires across North Boston have caused mass evacuations.

Emergency crews in the US have responded to the explosions which have damaged homes across three communities in the north of the state.

At least 20 homes are thought to have been on fire in Massachusetts, according to police chief Joseph Solomon.

He said there were so many fires "you can't even see the sky".

At least one home has been demolished and several others have caught fire amid a problem with a gas line that feeds homes in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence, the Eagle-Tribune newspaper said.

Apple TV problem

Bell Fibre 50, recent update on that fibre for better U/L speed which required a technicians visit, a new wire and hub, the *Sagemcom 5566*.

When I turned off the TV, hooked up to the latest Apple TV, from the apple controller, hours later turned it back on, and it would work perfectly.
Would either use the Netflix app or go into "computer" which would take me to iTunes where I had a library of files. They would sit on my main computer, streamed over to the TV.

Since the upgrade every time I turn off the TV from the apple controller, when I turn it back on it works fine if I go to Netflix but every single time I need to go into the files on iTunes to watch one on the TV it shows an empty library. I have to reboot the Apple TV device and then the files all show up.

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows how to fix it?

** Only have one Router in my home and the computer is hardwired
** Have 3 other tvs all hooked up to an older Apple TV without this problem.
Only with the latest apple tv

All I Can Say Is Hallelujah To This Idea!

It's time to end the drug compaines goughing of us all!

Hospitals Prepare To Launch Their Own Drug Company To Fight High Prices And Shortages

Quote:

Sometimes IV bags are hard for hospitals to come by. Other times it's injectable folic acid to treat anemias. Right now, the tissue-numbing agent lidocaine is in short supply.

Shortages of commonplace generic drugs have plagued hospitals in recent years. And with short supplies and fewer suppliers for key drugs, there have been price increases.

Hospital purchasing agents keep searching for new sources for the medications that patients need, while clinicians scramble to find alternatives.

"Every day at Intermountain we manage more than 100 drug shortages, and most of them are generics," said Dr. Marc Harrison, president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare, a system of 22 hospitals based in Salt Lake City. "The impact on patient care, in terms of trying to find alternatives and scurrying around and trying to find necessary drugs, is incredibly time-consuming and disconcerting."

Now Intermountain, along with several other major hospital systems and philanthropies, is taking the problem in hand. They are launching a nonprofit, generic drug company to help fight rising costs and chronic shortages.

The company, called Civica Rx, will be independent. But the board will include so-called governing members that include Intermountain, the Mayo Clinic, and for-profit HCA Healthcare, among others. The companies are unveiling the new venture's name, structure and leadership on Thursday. The intention to start it was announced in January.

The new company plans to market 14 common generic drugs that have been in short supply and whose prices have risen in recent years. Harrison declined to name the drugs.

"As we decided on the drugs we were really practical," Harrison said in an interview. "We looked for drugs that were now in short supply. We looked for drugs that were on the lists of essential medications, and we looked for drugs that have had huge spikes in their prices."

Drug shortages have become so widespread that Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in July created a task force to come up with solutions. And last year the Justice Department, along with 45 states, accused a group of generic drug makers of price fixing.

David Mitchell, founder of the advocacy group Patients for Affordable Drugs, says the nonprofit idea is good, but the impact will depend on which drugs the new venture decides to make.

"If they take on very expensive drugs for rare diseases and for which there is no competition ... that's good. If it is to compete where there is already competition and lower prices, that's not as good," he said.

Civica Rx will begin applying to the FDA as soon as early 2019 to make and sell the new generics, Harrison said. And the company will likely start out by contracting with existing manufacturers to make the medications under its label. Eventually though, it could buy manufacturing facilities of its own.

The Association for Accessible Medicines, a trade group for generic drug makers, said in a statement that it "welcomes into the generic drug manufacturing community any entity that shares our commitment to bring safe, effective and affordable treatment options to patients, providers and payers."

Civica Rx is getting seed money from the founding hospital systems, as well as from three foundations: the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, the Peterson Center on Healthcare and the Gary and Mary West Foundation. The company's CEO will be former Amgen executive Martin Van Trieste.

The nonprofit generic company is the brainchild of Dan Liljenquist, senior vice president and chief strategy officer at Intermountain. He says production of some generics has become so concentrated that companies have monopoly power over essential medications. And since they've already covered their manufacturing and development costs, they can use that power to keep competitors out.

"They can lower their prices until that new competitor leaves and then raise it back up again," Liljenquist said during a panel discussion in June.

To fight that power, Civica Rx will require hospitals to commit to long-term contracts to buy the medications at fixed prices, even if another generic company drops its prices lower. Liljenquist argues that the long-term stability will be more attractive than the short-term temptation of getting a deal.

Early indications suggest he's right.

About 120 health care companies that represent about a third of U.S. hospitals have contacted the organizers of Civica Rx to ask about getting in on the deal, Harrison said.

He said unscrupulous generic drug companies should be on guard.

"There are a lot of very principled generic drug makers out there and who sell drugs at reasonable prices and make them in adequate supplies," Harrison said. "They have nothing to worry about. They're friends. They're good colleagues.

But the less principled companies should take notice.

"The folks who are gouging people and creating shortages, they know who they are," he said. "And they're the ones who should be very concerned."

Contacts-iCloud-not on Mac

Added a bunch of Contacts on my iPhone today. Checked Contacts on my Mac when getting home and about a quarter of them actually made it over. All are on iCloud. All the added Contacts are showing up on my iPad but not on my Mac. I went to iCloud.com and I don't see them in Contacts either. How could they show on my iPad then?I could understand if they weren't showing on my iPad (slow to sync over), but what would give on this?

MacBook Pro keyboard... sigh....

Darnit.

Mid-2014 MBP. The "w" key has stopped working completely. Having to copy-and-paste lower- and upper-case. Fortunately I have a clipboard manager that lets me assign them to a keystroke, but what a pain in the butt.

Moreso since a fix is rather... expensive and daunting.

Sigh. Hope the research grant comes through - daddy needs a new MacBook! Of course, that means a whole new expense in terms of dongles, docks, etc. with the new USB-C connectors.... argh....

:-(

LF - Internet Uptime Monitor Software

I'm looking for an internet uptime monitor that will track my internet connectivity (via cable) for a longer period of time and record the times and durations when the internet drops.

I'm using a pretty new D-Link DIR-822 router and intially thought it was the culprit of the dropped connections, but now I'm thinking it's actually the cable internet connection itself.
The wireless part I can monitor nicely with the OS X built in wireless diagnostic but I haven't found a similar function on the Mac to monitor the internet connection itself.

The router will show me how long the internet connection has been up, but there doesn't seem to be an option to report that over the period of a few days or a week.
