For Sale ATI Radeon 5770 Mac Video Card

Finally got sick of this card so removed it and went with a PC video card for my Mac Pro.

Figured I'd try and sell this even though I know I should hold onto it for the boot screen should I need it.

I found a spare power cable for the Mac Pro as well so can sell the card with the cable. Zero issues. Has been used since 2013 when it was new.

Asking $150, feel free to make an offer. Located in Ottawa.

Keychain access on non iOS and Mc devices? Possible?

Say I am travelling, and I do not have my mac with me; and my iPhone is dead for some reason. So, say I use someone else's computer (maybe at a library or someone's house etc.). And say that computer is not a Mac.

Since I save all my passwords on iCloud Keychain, I no longer remember passwords to anything, most importantly my email accounts.

So, is there any way I could access iCloud Keychain on those computers and see what my password is supposed to be for a certain email account or website account?

Thank you and cheers

New, undetectable malware threat

New MacOS Malware, Signed With Legit Apple ID, Found Spying On HTTPS Traffic

Malware Research team at CheckPoint have discovered a new piece of fully-undetectable Mac malware, which according to them, affects all versions of Mac OS X, has zero detections on VirusTotal and is "signed with a valid developer certificate (authenticated by Apple)."

Dubbed DOK, the malware is being distributed via a coordinated email phishing campaign and, according to the researchers, is the first major scale malware to target macOS users.

The malware has been designed to gain administrative privileges and install a new root certificate on the target system, which allows attackers to intercept and gain complete access to all victim communication, including SSL encrypted traffic.

Apple iSight Camera

Is there any use or value with an older Apple isight camera? It has the firewire 400 connector and no adaptors or mounting brackets. I think i bought this for my mother years ago to add it to her computer but the computer is no more. My dad gave it to me and said do something with it, and I just stumbled across it again during my spring clean up.

In fact, anybody want it? drive up to Orillia to get it or I'll ship it at your cost

Epson WF-7520 Printing Problem

I wonder if anyone has ever come across a problem like this:

I'm running ElCapitan, printing on an Epson WF-7520
Usually have no problems printing

Yesterday I tried to print on a large 13" x 19" paper.
Used Epson Presentation Paper Matte, printed from a pdf file on my Mac.

The print came out mostly fine except for the dark blue squiggles shown in the picture.
Tried another print, similar squiggles but in a slightly different area and not as many
Tried it a third time, similar squiggles again but again in a slightly different area and a different number of them.
Then I printed on a regular 8 1/2 x 11 sheet - fine with no squiggles.
Printed on glosse 13" x 19" photo papet - a;so fine with no squiggles
Finally ended up going to Staples since I needed this image on 13 x 19 matte paper, also fine, no squiggles except Staples can only print up to 11" x 17"

Seems to me as if that Epson paper ios not cvompatible with the Epson printer - that it somehow doesn't feed right - maybe the paper weight is too light (it's 27 lbs) for that size of paper.
8 1/2 x 11 paper I often use is 20 lbs and that is fine; the 13 x 19 photo paper was 80 lbs and that was fine too.

Anyone have any insight on what is going on?

I'm trying to figure out why I get those squiggles and how to get a print without them.
Haven'

Airport Security

Remember that ban on tablets and computers on certain African / Middle Eastern countries?

Yup. It's expanding... UK is next. On the bright side, maybe people will read more books....?

Laptops & tablets may be banned from cabin baggage on US-bound flights from UK & other European countries
A U.S. ban on carrying laptops and tablets in the cabin of inbound international flights may be extended to European countries, including the UK. Any electronic device larger than a phone would have to be placed in hold baggage.

The U.S. government currently applies the ban to flights from 10 airports, mostly Middle Eastern and North African. The measure was introduced last month, the Department of Homeland Security stating that it was in response to intelligence suggesting that terrorists planned to smuggle explosives inside consumer electronics items …

The Guardian reports that the Trump administration is ‘considering’ extending the ban to flights from Europe.

Quote:

British officials understand that their US counterparts are looking at extending the ban – which prevents any devices larger than a smartphone being taken as carry-on luggage – to flights from Europe. One Whitehall source suggested to the Guardian that although it was not certain that the ban would be extended to the UK, the US was considering doing so.
The DHS neither confirmed nor denied the report.

Quote:

Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for the US Department of Homeland Security, said: “We’ve said we will continue to evaluate the threat environment and make determinations based on that assessment, but we have not made any decisions on expanding the current restrictions against large electronic devices in aircraft cabins from selected airports.”
Such a move would likely hit both business travel and tourism. For business travellers, being able to work during flights enables them to remain productive while travelling, while many tourists may prefer to choose a different destination to avoid entrusting valuable equipment to the vagaries of hold baggage.

Data Usage

I've noticed that my data usage has increased significantly in the last couple of months yet my internet activity has not changed. Lately, I come to the 95% warning a week before my billing cycle ends. I have 5GB of data which, not too long ago, was sufficient. In using DataMan app, I can see that flipping through a few web pages (CBS and maybe one other news site), 1-200MB of data is consumed. I don't ever remember that kind of usage for simple surfing news sites. What could be up with this kind of spike? Something to do with iOS? I restored my iPhone to new not too long ago with no real benefit on this issue. Is it possible that the issue could be Bell Mobility?

what is the deal with iCloud?????

So I had to reset my iCloud password last week, was a bit of a pain as it is used on about 4 computers, 4 iPads and a few iPhones at work (share contacts, calendar etc). Today the password I set no longer works... on any computer that it did work before. I try logging in with the password no go. With some grumbling I try the forgot my password link and go through a process only to get this message that I am now in account recovery which could take a few days.... days?!?!?!

What is going on here? Why is changing a password this time consuming? I get there is security but I answered everything they asked, phone number, payment details, etc. Have to say working with Apple iCloud and Apple in general is getting more and more frustrating. Think Different... they certainly are. The annoying message constantly pops up asking to login to iCloud, had to sign out completely to get rid of the pop up. I used to love OS X, it was an OS that worked well did not get in the way and made life simpler. No longer the case, needless to say I am not a happy Apple user at the moment and if the current trend continues I could see jumping ship sometime down the road, which is terrifying in itself going back to maintaining Windows computers.

R.I.P. Erin Moran (Joanie; Happy Days)

Erin Moran Dead: ‘Happy Days,’ ‘Joanie Loves Chachi’ Star Was 56

Erin Moran, best known for playing Joanie Cunningham on the 1970s sitcom “Happy Days,” has died. She was 56.

According to TMZ, Moran’s body was found unresponsive Saturday afternoon by authorities in Indiana. The cause of death is unknown.

The California-born actress, who also starred in the “Happy Days” spinoff “Joanie Loves Chachi,” had fallen on hard times in recent years. She was reportedly kicked out of her trailer park home in Indiana because of her hard-partying ways.

Henry Winkler, who starred opposite Moran as The Fonz in CBS’ iconic series, tweeted: “OH Erin…now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth. Rest In It serenely now…too soon.”

Wireless Printer disconnects from Mac

I have a HP 3830 Office Jet printer and a Macbook Pro 2009. Anytime I want to wireless print to my laptop, I have to shut down the printer and the restart. I am able to print/scan at that point but after a few minutes, it drops the connection and I have to shutdown/restart again. i have tried many suggestions but the same occurs. I think the problem is that the modem is in the basement and the printer is on the 2nd floor. I have no problems with wifi with any other devices, just the printer. So I guess the best option is an extender.

Can anyone suggest any other options or is an extender the best? If so, what would suffice without having to break the bank....

Thanks

Tiny, Family-Run Iowa Newspaper Wins Pulitzer

In this day and age of the press under fire, hats off to this small weekly. Notice it took a daily in the UK to give us this news, not the American main stream media. Funny that.

Quote:

Art Cullen owns the 3,000-circulation Storm Lake Times with his brother John. His wife and son also work at the paper.

A small-town Iowa newspaper with a staff of 10 people - most of whom are related to each other – has won a Pulitzer Prize for taking on powerful agricultural companies over farm pollution.

Art Cullen, who owns the Storm Lake Times with his brother John, acknowledged it wasn’t easy taking on agriculture in a state like Iowa where you see hundreds of miles of farm fields in every direction. The Cullens lost a few friends and a few advertisers, but never doubted they were doing the right thing.

“We’re here to challenge people’s assumptions and I think that’s what every good newspaper should do,” he said.

Old Apple Hypercard Manuals

While adapting to a new life style I was cleaning out my office/studio, I uncovered a collection of Apple Hypercard manuals. I liked and used Hypercard for a few years, never was very good at setting up complex reports, but was able to build reasonable question and answer presentations for trade shows. Very disappointed that Apple dropped the ball with this wonderfull program.

Anyway, I have a few manuals here which I would like to pass along.

Multiple Macs, One display, multiple displays and multiple Macs

I have two macs. A 27 Imac that I run with three monitors. This works great but. I want to run my second computer (mac mini) On one of the three monitors while using the same keyboard and mouse as the Imac. While doing this I also want to still run the IMac on the remaining two monitors? I am somewhat familiar with "Synergy mouse and keyboard software" but have not tried it yet. I am aware that this will not fix my issue of multiple computers with a single monitor issue. This, I think can be achieved with a KVM switch. Is there an elegant way to make this work that wont involve physically switching cables etc?

United Airlines - Worst company ever?

I mean... among the many incidents involving United, from breaking Son of Maxwell's Guitar...

...to the press disaster that was the Great Leggings Incident of 2017, now this? :yikes:

(emphasis mine)

Video shows man forcibly removed from United flight from Chicago to Louisville
A video posted on Facebook late Sunday evening shows a passenger on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Louisville being forcibly removed from the plane before takeoff at O’Hare International Airport.

The video, posted by Audra D. Bridges at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, is taken from an aisle seat on a commercial airplane that appears to be preparing to take flight. The 31-second clip shows three men wearing radio equipment and security jackets speaking with a man seated on the plane. After a few seconds, one of the men grabs the passenger, who screams, and drags him by his arms toward the front of the plane. The video ends before anything else is shown.

A United spokesperson confirmed in an email Sunday night that a passenger had been taken off a flight in Chicago.

"Flight 3411 from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked," the spokesperson said. "After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate.

"We apologize for the overbook situation."

* * *

Passengers were told at the gate that the flight was overbooked and United, offering $400 and a hotel stay, was looking for one volunteer to take another flight to Louisville at 3 p.m. Monday. Passengers were allowed to board the flight, Bridges said, and once the flight was filled those on the plane were told that four people needed to give up their seats to stand-by United employees that needed to be in Louisville on Monday for a flight. Passengers were told that the flight would not take off until the United crew had seats, Bridges said, and the offer was increased to $800, but no one volunteered.

Then, she said, a manager came aboard the plane and said a computer would select four people to be taken off the flight. One couple was selected first and left the airplane, she said, before the man in the video was confronted.

Bridges said the man became "very upset" and said that he was a doctor who needed to see patients at a hospital in the morning. The manager told him that security would be called if he did not leave willingly, Bridges said, and the man said he was calling his lawyer. One security official came and spoke with him, and then another security officer came when he still refused. Then, she said, a third security official came on the plane and threw the passenger against the armrest before dragging him out of the plane.

The man was able to get back on the plane after initially being taken off – his face was bloody and he seemed disoriented, Bridges said, and he ran to the back of the plane. Passengers asked to get off the plane as a medical crew came on to deal with the passenger, she said, and passengers were then told to go back to the gate so that officials could "tidy up" the plane before taking off.

Magsafe 1 options?

I'm sure I'm not the only one here faced with this dilemma... I have three laptops that are Magsafe-1, but only one power adapter, and it's a bit of a pain when more than one has to be in use given that the batteries are now long in the tooth.

There's a Magsafe-1-to-2 adapter that is (was?) for sale on the Apple Store, but that doesn't help me, and I don't think there ever was a Magsafe-2-to-1 adapter.

I do have three Magsafe-1 power adapters laying around that don't work anymore, naturally.

So... what are we to do? Anyone out there producing old Magsafe-1 compatible chargers?

ipod nano problem - shows red circle & diagonal line

I'm trying to figure out if an ipod nano (A1137) I just found in my desk is still usable.

It charges fine, itunes opens when I plug it into a Mac but I seem to have problems transferring a music file to it.

The file shows up as an mp3 if I look at the ipod folder on the Mac but it's not there if I look on the ipod display.

The ipod nano icon on the desktop has in the display of the icon, a red circle with a diagonal red line running from top left to bottom right at about a 45 degree angle.

I assume that has something to do with my problem.

I usually use neither itunes nor ipods so I don't know what the problem is and how to fix it.
Umpteen google searches got me nowhere.

Any ipod experts who can point me in the right direction?

How do I arrange desktop icons in alphabetical order on El Capitan

I like to have my files and folders in icon view on the desktop sorted in the conventional, alphabetical way, from A to Z starting at top left and ending at bottom right.

For some reason the sorting is backwards, starts at Z going to A; all the icons also fill the right side of the screen rather than the left.

How do I change that to what I would call a "normal" view???

Bare minimum specs for music production???

I know it depends what you do and what you need.

I record drums and require minimum of 4 tracks. (Kick, Snare and two Overheads)

I mostly use Pro Tools 10.

I've been using countless devices, Maxed Out 2012 Mac Mini Quad, maxed out late 2013 iMac, maxed out 13" and 15" rMBPs...etc.

Recently I've sold my desktop and went for a 2015 13" rMBP, thinking that it would probably be able to handle basic 4 track recording. (2.4Ghz 8gb 128gb I think)

When I started recording, it gave me overload error, I reduced it down to 3 tracks, same after 2 seconds of recording, went for 2 tracks, same thing.

I did not have any plug-ins, wifi was off, no program was running other than PT.

Make long story short, what will be your "bare-bone" set up for hard recording? Funny even mentioning "bare-bone" cause it will still cost fortune...

Some says Logic could handle same stuff much lighter than PT, but I am strictly using PT for now. Probably will grab Apple's new educational program pack.

Schiller: No new Mac Pro, Display in 2017

I think this is unprecedented... Apple VP Phil Schiller talking this openly about product plans? When did that ever happen?

Apple to ditch the current Mac Pro design

Apple has decided to move away from the current, cylinder-shaped design used on its Mac Pro desktop, but creating a replacement will take until next year, executives said on Monday.

In a rare admission of a misstep, executives conceded the unusual design limited Apple's ability to offer meaningful upgrades and failed to meet many pro users' needs. Top executives said the company has begun work on a new desktop and a professional monitor.

"You won't see any of these products this year," Senior Vice President Phil Schiller told a handful of reporters in a discussion at Apple's offices in Cupertino. "It's important to do something great. That will take longer than this year to do."

In the interim, Apple plans to introduce new versions of the iMac with components more geared to professionals later this year. Also, later on Tuesday, it will announce a modest performance update to the existing Mac Pro in an attempt to tide over those who rely on Apple's highest-end machine. The updated configurations will add more processor cores and improved graphics performance.

Among the other points discussed:

Apple reiterated its commitment both to the Mac and to professional users as well as to continuing to develop pro software such as Final Cut and Logic. "The Mac has an important, long future at Apple," Schiller said. "We have every intention to keep investing in the Mac."

Schiller apologized for the slowness of upgrades with the Mac Pro. "We're sorry for what happened with the Mac Pro. We are going to come out with something great to replace it."

The company has no plans for touchscreen Macs, or for machines powered solely by the kind of ARM processors used in the iPhone and iPad. However, executives left open the possibility ARM chips could play a broader role as companion processors, something that showed up first with the T1 processor that powers the Touch Bar in the new MacBook Pro.

The Civil Thread

This is an experiment. I want to create a thread where people do not see the need to bicker about every little thing. Theee can be disagreements, certainly, but people who post here need to agree to try to handle disagreements in a civil manner. Any topic is fair game, but we all need to be aware of each otter's hot buttons and try to avoid pressing them if possible. Apologies are acceptable if we do. No out downs or insults please. Civility is the theme.

Basically, I'm wondering how many posts this thread can go before it gets derailed.

First topic: communication on an Internet forum can be a complicated affair.

Have at 'er.

Let's Rewrite English Grammar!

Languages change over time, and so do the rules of those languages. I was wondering what rules eMac'ers would change in the English language if they could write new rules.

As an example, I would change all the rules with the verb Be, no more I am, He or she is, they are etc... it would be I be working, she be here, they be there...

Your turn..
