Imac purchase

Hi,

I'm in the market to purchase a new imac to replace my late 2009, 21.5" unit. I would prefer to have a 512 ssd instead of the HD. Apple, in their wisdom only pre-installs this size ssd in their mid and high end units.

Would it be advisable to purchase the low end unit with a HD and after a couple of years install a ssd? Or, should I use our grandchildrens' inheritance and buy the mid range unit with the built in ssd?

We are also looking to purchase a printer with fax capability to replace our old Canon MX330. While it has been a good printer it has now started to leave ink smears on the paper's edge no matter how often I try to clean it. We have read reviews on a number of makes and are confused by the problems people have with all brands. We are looking at prices between $100 and $150 so could someone recommend one please?

Thanks
Sonny

iOS & Image Capture space-wasting bug

macOS Image Capture Bug Fills Up Hard Drives With Empty Data
A new bug has been discovered in Apple’s macOS Image Capture app that can waste potential gigabytes of storage space when transferring photos from an iOS device to a Mac.
---
The bug pops up when users uncheck the Mac tool converts HEIF photos taken by iOS to more standard JPG files. Unfortunately, the app also adds 1.5MB of empty data to every single file copied.
---
...the bug only occurs when transferring photos from Apple devices, not when importing photos from digital cameras using Image Capture.

The NeoFinder team say they have notified Apple of the bug, and recommend a short-term solution is to try a new beta version of developer Thorsten Lemke’s Graphic Converter, which includes an option to remove the unwanted empty data from the JPEG files.

How you charge your new MBP may affect performance

Huh. Interesting read.

Are You Charging Your MacBook on the Wrong Side?
Yes, you read that headline correctly. There is apparently a “right” way and a “wrong” way to connect devices to a MacBook with Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on both sides. Doing it wrong can affect your computer’s performance.

Spontaneous restart

Afternoon all,

My Mac Mini restarted all by itself. No user input or power outage.

Check Activity Monitor (couldn't make head or tail of it) and ran its System Diagnostics.

It was the first time I've done that and it gave me a .gz file.

What do I do with that?

Cheers.

28" monitor that works well with Macbook

My Father bought a 28" monitor on Amazon and has been unhappy with the brightness (Samsung 570) He has been messing with this monitor for a couple of weeks and has decided to return it (Amazon) and perhaps go with a Dell. I have been tasked with figuring out what is a good purchase. He is after a 27" . I know nothing about monitors and my Dad who is 89 thinks that I do. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good monitor that is value priced that would work well with a current model laptop. He will be buying it through Amazon.com (Dad live in the States) Tia.

Macbook brightness on external monitor

My Dad recently purchased a Samsung 570 27 inch monitor to aid viewing text when using his current model Macbook Pro. The output is through his Thunderbolt port. He is finding the image quite dark compared to his laptop screen and can't seem to find any info on brightening it at the monitor end. Are there any options within the Macbook to brighten the output? Suggestions appreciated.

weird Big file on desktop

I was cleaning up my desktop and discovered a 13 GB file labelled "ziiBNJPO" that only indicates it can open in TextEdit.

I tried adding an extension (.mov and .mp4) just to see if it might be a video file given its size. But that didn't work. I have no idea what this is but could definitely used getting the space back.

I noted when it was last modified and checked back in my dayplanner but that didn't reveal anything useful.

Any ideas what this could be? It's so big so I'm hesitant to just delete it without knowing what it is....or may be.

Users report serious problems with macOS Catalina 10.15.4

Quote:

MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 was released a few weeks ago - but don't rush to install the update just yet, because multiple users say it creates more problems than it fixes.

Some have found that the hard drive in an updated machine continually spins even when the Mac is supposed to be asleep, which could cause damage; others report system crashes when waking from sleep (involving a kernel panic and reboot to the Apple logo), and problems when copying more than 30GB of data.

Hopefully the bugs are fixed in macOS Catalina 10.15.5, which is currently being beta tested. Affected users can of course also try downgrading to an older version.

MacRumors has asked Apple for a comment, but at time of writing, had received no response. However, the company has pushed out an additional update that does not raise the version number. It is not clear if this update solves the major issues outlined in this article.

Commercials breaking in

How do you people feel about the commercials that are breaking into posts? They last for about 15 seconds and break in anywhere to tell you all about Ford etc. When it happens to me, unless I am really interested, I just move on.

R.I.P. Shirley Douglas

Actress Shirley Douglas, Canadian activist and mom to Kiefer Sutherland, dead at 86

Shirley Douglas, the impassioned Canadian activist and veteran actress who was mother to actor Kiefer Sutherland and daughter of medicare founder Tommy Douglas, has died.

She had just turned 86 on April 2.

Sutherland announced his mother's death on Twitter, saying she succumbed to complications surrounding pneumonia on Sunday morning. He said that her illness was not related to COVID-19.

"My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life," said Sutherland.

"Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming."

A native of Weyburn, Sask., Douglas worked with famed directors including Stanley Kubrick on Lolita and David Cronenberg on Dead Ringers. She won a Gemini Award for her performance in the 1999 TV film, Shadow Lake.

She also tirelessly supported a variety of causes throughout her life, including the civil rights movement, the Black Panthers and the fight to save public health care, pioneered by her politician father.

In 1965, Douglas married Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, with whom she had two children before they divorced — twins Rachel, a production manager, and Kiefer, who became a film and TV star in his own right.

Douglas also had another son, Thomas, from a previous marriage.

[....]

Born on April 2, 1934, Douglas showed an early interest in the arts as well as politics as she journeyed on the campaign trail with her father, who became premier of Saskatchewan, a federal NDP leader and a socialist icon.

She attended the Banff School of Fine Arts and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England, where she acted in theatre and TV and participated in anti-nuclear marches.

In the 1960s and 1970s, while living in California, Douglas campaigned against the Vietnam War and protested for various politicial and social causes.

She also helped to establish a fundraising group called Friends of the Black Panthers. Her support for the group brought controversy, though — she was refused a U.S. work permit and arrested in 1969 on conspiracy charges of possessing unregistered explosives. The courts eventually dismissed the case and exonerated her.

Douglas's other activism included co-founding the first chapter in Canada of the Performing Artists for Nuclear Disarmament.

She said she never worried whether standing up for what she believed in — even in the days of the so-called Hollywood black list — would hurt her acting career.

"I think to live your life you have to live it, and if you see something that offends you morally or any other way, you have to follow that and take it up," Douglas told The Canadian Press, noting she also had support from many fellow actors and filmmakers.

"I know a lot of McCarthy-ite victims. It was hard for them but really they had no choice. And when you have no choice and you see something, it's like if you see a child going to be run over by a car — you grab the child.

"And for me, many things that I see wrong are as obvious as grabbing a child and so what else would you do?"

Douglas, who lived in Toronto since 1977, was nominated for two other Geminis: in 1998 for her leading role in the series, Wind at My Back, and in 1993 for starring in the film, Passage of the Heart.

[....]

Perhaps her biggest role, though, was as a champion for medicare.

Douglas would speak of the importance of a universal health-care system at virtually any opportunity and lobbied government officials and fundraised for the cause.

She was also a national spokesperson for the Canada Health Coalition lobby group and was involved in the Toronto Health Coalition and the Friends of Medicare Toronto.

"Let us never forget that the federal government is the guardian and enforcer of the five principles of the Canada Health Act: universality, accessibility, portability, comprehensiveness and public administration," she said in a statement on behalf of the Canadian Health Coalition during the 2011 federal election campaign.

SafariTabs

There was a wonderful little appl called SafariTabs released by a company called Eelee in 2003. A simple click on SafariTabs would generate a text doc of all open tabs to one's desktop.

I'm the kind of Canuck who has dozens of Safari tabs open. Sometimes I close the window, or, lose them in other ways.

When I try to open SafariTabs, it's now asking me for an activation code. Well, I surely don't have one! (It's NOT stealing--Eelee is long out of business!)

Anybody else using SafariTabs? Or can suggest an alternative? I need this function & I bet others do, too!

Tanx!

Wanted To Buy Older mac hardware

Don't know if anyone out there still has these laying around, but would be nice to see if i could get them.

- First is an Official Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti for Mac. Would be easier to hook up my 22" ADC to it instead of the VGA flashed versions of the card.

- Second is a Seritek/Firmtek 1V4 4 port sata card. Can't seem to find anywhere online to find it. Sure i could flash a dual port card, but i like the 4 port card with native os 9 booting.

- Third is an old Powermate USB controller. The one with the blue light under it. I have seen the new USB-C version, but i'm looking for the USB-A one.

If anyone has info about these, it would greatly be appreciated. :D

Netflex and 10.15.4

Hi all. Updated to 10.15.4 and using Safari. I can enter Netflix and watch previews but stalls when I hit play. Suspect I've lost the silverlight plug in but it doesn't prompt me to install. Thoughts? Thank you.

Alpha Thunder Testo UK

https://www.worldhealthcart.com/alpha-thunder-testo-uk/

Lou Ferrigno tries to make his last meal very close to bedtime, to assist in the recovery and construction of muscle fibers (most of this physiological process occurs during sleep). It is important, however, that this last evening meal contains low-carbohydrate foods to prevent unwanted fat accumulation. Bodybuilders in the 1970s had a "more, the better" training philosophy. They practically did not believe in rest, reserving only one day of the week for recovery (some not even). Lou Ferrigno trained hard from Monday to Saturday, and usually started his routine with exercises for the calf, abdomen and trapezius, when necessary. Accumulating titles is not for any athlete, and still being recognized and revered for his professionalism further consolidates the influence that his work has on the admirers who follow his career and those who will still be able to recognize and use him as a reference for the world of bodybuilding . Ronnie Coleman is much more than that, this professional is no longer dedicated to competitions, but is still regarded as a parameter for many athletes and practitioners of physical exercises who want to have a sculpted and healthy body.

Free MS Outlook

My MS Office subscription ends shortly and I was wondering if I could still use Outlook.

My Mail app crashes constantly and other email apps just don't grab me.

Thunderbird always disconnects from my iCloud account, Spark seems a bit unfinished and Mailspring hangs when I'm setting it up.

I used Outlook Express way back when and it seemed to be a serviceable email client.

So my question is: is Outlook a free email client that will carry on working when my subscription ends?

Tried MS support but their chatbot wasn't helpful.

TVOS Update on ATV4 (not 4K) breaks screensaver

I just got back from vacation and into quarantine last week. Fired up the AppleTV 4 and it wanted to update to TVOS 13.4.
I use the screen saver to watch a selection of my photos, served from my multimedia server running MacOS 10.12. Whenever I upgrade, I always have to reset the ATV screen saver back to iTunes home sharing from Apple's default Aerial.
So this time I reset it, made sure Home Sharing was on, saw a preview of my photos, turned on my music, and waited. The screen went black. No photos showed. Aerial works, but not photos from Home Sharing.
I'm hoping 13.4.1 will sort things.
