Airport extending wireless range question

Okay- I have an Airport/Time capsule which works fine for both jobs, and using wireless when I'm a few feet away. However, my TV set, which is supposed to be sorta "smart", has wireless, and does connect to the airport, however, the signal is lousy...lots of lag and stuttering. It also has an ethernet socket on the back. I bought a DLink 845L wireless router hoping to be able, somehow, to extend the wireless range of the airport to minimize this problem. However, I'm having one heck of a time getting it setup. I guess I'm spoiled having an Airport where you just load the software, plug it in, hit the button and boom, usually it works. This one you have to configure via web browser and it's a bother. I thought I could use it as a wireless bridge only to find out -- I cannot. It's a router or access point only. Well, it was only $30, so not a lot of money wasted, but time and sleep. Hmmm...sounds like this ol' 845 is going to find a new home soon. I've also tried chatting with DLink's support staff and they are a little helpful-they point me to a faq and that's it
will call 'em on monday...I hope
thanks for any help

Highway of Tears (missing/murdered native women in BC)

Emails relating to B.C.'s Highway of Tears allegedly deleted
A former staffer at the B.C. Ministry of Transportation alleges that more than a dozen emails were deleted in November 2014 following a freedom of information request relating to the Highway of Tears, a stretch of road notorious for cases of missing and murdered women.

The NDP has made public a letter written by former executive assistant Tim Duncan to Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham. In the letter, Duncan says that when he protested an instruction to delete the emails, a ministerial assistant took hold of his keyboard and did it himself.

"When I hesitated, he took away my keyboard, deleted the emails and returned the keyboard, stating, 'It's done. Now you don't have to worry about it anymore,'" Duncan wrote in the letter.

When his concerns continued to be dismissed, Duncan writes, he was told, "It's like The West Wing. You do whatever it takes to win."

Duncan writes that he does not believe the incident was unusual.

"I want to stress that this is not an isolated incident. It is my belief that the abuse of the freedom of information process is widespread and most likely systemic within the [Premier Christy] Clark government. I would ask that you please look into this further."

* * *

Jennifer Rice, the NDP member of the legislature for the North Coast, spoke to CBC's Daybreak North in February about a freedom of information request she made last November while looking for information surrounding meetings that were supposed to have taken place about Highway 16 (the Highway of Tears)

Rice had specifically requested "records related to meetings held by the ministry on this issue. The time frame for my request is May 15, 2014, to November 19, 2014."

The government, she said, asked for an extension on the request, twice, in order to transcribe written notes.

When the government eventually responded in November, Rice said, she was told, "No records exist. Case is closed."

"Are there records that have been hidden?" Rice asked. "Or are there no records?"

MBP 15-inch: 2.5GHz with Retina display

I'm trying to decide between the two 15" MBP models... at the 15" level the difference in processor, HD space, and Memory are negligible. I seem to see no major difference between the models other than the graphic processor.

The 15-inch: 2.2GHz with Retina display, simply has Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

The 15-inch: 2.5GHz with Retina display, has the Intel Iris Pro Graphics as well as the AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2GB GDDR5 memory.

Anyone have any experience with these two models that can tell me if the additional graphics card makes that much of a significant difference in performance?

Dropbox revisions - new, free App.

I recently had need of finding an earlier version of a file stored in a friend's Dropbox. I knew that DB had a revision scheme, and set about to rescue my friend's file from some edits that had unknowingly affected other parts of the document. Hero status in mind, off I went to the DB webpage. And darned if I could find it. How embarrassing!

Now there's a new, free app available to give you quick and easy access to Dropbox revisions:

Revisions for Dropbox Makes Viewing Your Dropbox History Easy on Mac

Mac: Dropbox’s revision history is a great way to pull up older versions of files, but it’s not exactly easy to use in the web app. Revisions for Dropbox is a Mac app that lives in your menu bar and makes browsing file versions a breeze.

With Revisions, you can browse file history by date, type, location, and more. You can then search for specific revisions to narrow down on your search and find the exact file version you’re looking for. You can then load up that older version of a file or restore revisions in bulk. The app’s free, but an in-app purchase unlocks extra features, including the ability to see which user edited a file, advanced filtering, and more. That said, for most of us, the free version is plenty.

I never learn..

My kids school sent out a letter saying please plant trees, as they will receive a bonus for each tree.
So as a proud idiot of two kids I called up the provincially subsidized 'tree program' for my region - mentioned the kids and school.. paid an incredibly great price for 3 trees/delivered and planted. LOL
[ also I live in a new development , figured couldn't hurt. ]

an Arborist came showed us incredible photos of trees. We made our selections..
something seemed to be to good to be true.. I paid in advanced ..

here is what they left behind.

My wife is livid - screaming that my girth is wider, how did I talk her into this?..
well i guess i didn't learn, that anything to do with provincial liberals/Kathleen Wynne is BS or massive disappointment / scam

iPhone 4 voicemail question

I have an iphone 4s, iOS 8.3 and I'm trying to figure out why the voicemail indicator is still lit up when I don't have any voicemails. I see the phone icon, and there's a red dot on it. I tap on it to open it, I can see "contacts' "recents", Keypad" and "voicemail". I tap on it to activate my cellphone company's voicemail feature. I check to see if I have any voicemails. I don't. Yet the voicemail icon has a red dot by it, which shows that I have a voicemail, but...
I don' t:confused:

I can't figure this out right now, so I leave it....
thanks for any clarity on this one

Don't know how may of you have heard about this. Not covered much besides blogs, etc.

I don't know who is right & who is wrong & there is BS flying from all directions but there is something about this whole sordid affair that just doesn't pass the sniff test.

The first link gives a rough overview of what happened.

The second asks what may have happened if the bikers were anything besides white or Hispanic.

The third comes across as the most informed & has multiple links to stories, the first of relevance is dated May 18. Start at that one & read up from there, anything with Waco in the title.

R.I.P. John and Alicia Nash ("A Beautiful Mind")

John Nash, mathematician who inspired A Beautiful Mind, dead after car crash

Mathematician John Nash, the Nobel Prize winner who inspired the film A Beautiful Mind, has been killed in a car accident along with his wife in New Jersey. He was 86.

Nash and his wife, Alicia Nash, 82, were in a taxi accident Saturday, New Jersey State Police Sergeant First Class Gregory Williams told CBC News.

Police responded to the accident at 4:30 p.m. local time on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound.

Two people had been ejected from the vehicle, Williams said, and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Oscar award-winning film A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe was loosely based on Nash's longtime struggle with schizophrenia.

A probability challenge for you!

Been a while since I last posted to you all, my friends. But here's one that stumped a group of our students in Grade 8:

"To estimate the probability that a new baby will be a boy, Tara rolls a die. She says that if she rolls a 1, 2 or 3, she will predict a boy and if she rolls a 4, 5, 6 she will predict a girl. Using this method, estimate the probability that, for the next 10 days, the first two babies born will be boys."

Poor Audio Quality on 12" PB via Bluetooth

On my 12" PB 1.5GHz I notice real poor audio quality over Bluetooth. The BT speaker works fine on my MBP, iPhone 5 and other recent Macs. I've even noticed the same problem with the sound being choppy on my 1.33GHz iBook too.

Are these Macs just too old? Does BT audio take up too much cpu power?? Anyone else have experience with this?

An easy restore!

Every once in a long while my old school approach pays big dividends.

Yesterday the local ISP went down so I shut down the computer for a couple of hours came back and no boot just an endlessly spinning dial against a grey screen. Booted from the secondary HD and ran some tests. OS partition could not be repaired. I keep data on a secondary partition. Made sure that was double backed, backed the user profiles which thankfully I could still read.

Went ahead and zeroed out the OS partition, just to be sure that bad blocks were not an issue. Then did a terminal asr from an older disk image from September of last year. I use Super Duper to create uncompressed disk images rather than clones, Since only the OS and apps exist on the OS Volume they are reasonably compact and this gives me the option of going back to a known good version of the OS. It also allows me to store several disk images without creating a whack of disk partitions.

Once I gave up on recovery. Total restore time was under half an hour including the fifteen minutes it took to zero the partition. Had to update FireFox and Flash Player and a couple of other apps once the internet was back-up. Once everything is thoroughly tested it will take another hour or so to create and test a new disk image. But that can be done at my leisure.

New HD will soon be on order. This is an older MacPro which I bought used from MacDoc. I have no idea of the HD history, so $110 for a new drive seems like a worthwhile investment at this stage.

How to check health of battery on an iphone 4S

Friend of mine just bought an iphone 4S from a co-worker.
Trying to check the health of the battery, mostly the number of battery cycles and the actual charge capacity vs the design capacity.

Thought the capability to check the battery was built into the unit but it doesn't seem to be.
Do I need to download an app to check that?
And will the app actually query the chip in the battery to get the true number of cycles and the current capacity?
What app do people recommend?

Electronic Signature

Does anyone have any insight into this concept and how it can possibly be considered legally the same as a regular signature?

I was just sent the first document (for me) asking for an electronic signature.
The document that required an "Electronic Signature" was processed by e-signlive.com, the document itself was a modification to an existing contract with a real estate company.
Just to give a bit of background.

So....
The link to the document to be signed came in a regulat email.
An email that anyone can easily intercept, so anyone could have picked up the link.

Clicking on the link then took me to the document where the electronic signature was required. The link itself was secure, as in https, but I don't think that is even relevant - anyone could have clicked on that link and get access to the ocument.

Then the "Electronic Signature" was simply a click with the mouse on a field in the document.
Anyone could have done that.
There was no validation of any kind that the person doing it was actually me.

I don't see how this would have any hope of standing up in a court of law if it ever came to that.
Am I missing something here?
Something that would actually validate that I essentially signed the document.

mpeg streamclip question

Hi,

I used this program to take a few clips out of a dvd to make a Festival trailer a few months ago but since then did complete ...clean up...don't know the right word....wiped everything and re-loaded. So...mpeg streamclip was re-downloaded recently and now I get a message that says:

"The Apple QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component is not installed...

You will miss the two most important features of MPEG Streamclip:
- you won't be able to play MPEG-2 files and transport streams;
- you won't be able to convert MPEG-2 files and transport streams to QuickTime, DV, AVI.

I used to have Final Cut Studio 5.1.4 on my computer too but didn't see the need to re-load it because I can't do HD with it. Did that fix this?

I saw a post that referred to QT 6 but when I search it I see only 7...

Suggestions? I'm trying to make another trailer for a grant application and if I can't fix this soon won't have much to support the application with.

Thanks in advance.

What RAM for MacBook Pro 15" late 2008?

Since installing Yosemite, my old MacBook has been grinding slow, especially in the first ten minutes or so after waking, so I'm thinking I should add more RAM. Will my old machine handle 8 gig or ony a max of 6 gig, which Apple seems to recommend for my model? I'm asking as I'm finding only 2x4 or 2x2 gig modules for sale, and I gather that there are only two slots for RAM.

Also, can you recommend a brand? Apple's RAM seems to be a lot more expensive than others. I'm gaily assuming that it'll be easy to install myself, even though I've never opened the case on this machine.

Thanks

Yosemite Issues - AGAIN!!!

So after about a month of doing a clean install of Yosemite, last night after hitting the space bar to wake the computer (HD sleep & screen sleep, computer doesn't) the screen was black with backlit on, and spinning beach ball...

I restarted, click to open HD beach ball again for a long time. Computer became inoperable, so I restarted again, in safe mode, it didn't make to safe mode because it restarted again.
then I tried to repair disk in Recovery mode, told me it couldn't unmount the disk.

So then I ran fsck -yk did what it did, still beach ball after a restart.

Target boot from another computer to run diskwarrior, it rebuilt the drive...still beach ball after a reboot.

NOW last resort, i'm reinstalling from Time Machine a two day old back up, started this morning at 7:30 am, guess it should be finished by the time I get home.
I'm hoping this will fix what ever went wrong.

I did manage to get disk utility to repair the drive and fix permissions before I restored from a back up. I don't get it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Mouse hunt: recos?

I hate being on my track pad.

Been looking for a mouse to replace this very unresponsive portable mouse that's seemingly dating from antiquity. Anyhow, i was in FS ummm... Best Buy yesterday looking and wow... it's a sea of choices. But, I did catch a few from MS that seemed interesting.

Ergo Mouse

Comfort Mouse

Both were comfy. The little rubber section did offer a very comfy grip.

There were a few from Logitech i liked, and i am trying to take this one with me on the road with me. I had seen this one online, but didn't realize how small his ultra thin touch mouse was. But it reminds me too much of the magic mouse though...

Oddly, i'm still a fan of a corded mouse, and with all these models that have a miniature USB receivers, i'm scared i'll just lose it.

What's everyone out here using? Magic Mouse?? I'm not a huge fan...

Side note - they sure have skyrocketed in price since I last bought one.

Gas Prices?

It is provincial jurisdiction, should they be regulated like the Atlantic provinces or not?

There is much derogatory talk about supposed "price fixing" by producers and retailers, so what is the argument for "price fixing" by a government?

Which computer for Mechanical Engineering

So I'm starting in Mechanical Engineering at university and my current 3.1 White MacBook still serves me well but I'd like to upgrade for school. Most Mech. Eng. software is only windows compatible so it seems I would have to run some form of parallels/bootcamp arrangement to run these softwares.

I've thought of this as a possibility: getting a MB air for work out and about campus and a Mac Mini as a desktop setup for home. Another route is just to buy a MB pro and use that on campus and as my main computer at home. The down side of having only a MBP is that you end up having to fiddle with some cables when dealing with an external screen and my external screen isn't as nice as say a iMac. I might be able to afford a low end iMac and a low end MB air for portability.

Also, one worry I have is that if I only get a MPB, I might be tempted by a 15" screen, but then you loose the awesome portability the 13" screen offers. It's not exactly bulky but it's a considerable difference.

I do also have an iPad so that paired with an external keyboard is actually pretty nice as a note taker.

Thanks in advances for any suggestions.

HP Officejet 6815 incompatible with Snow Leopard :(

My Canon printer croaked so I bought a new Officejet 6815 AIO printer that allows wireless printing and scanning. I unpackaged everything and couldn't wait to get started but I can't download a driver that will install on Snow Leopard.

The most modern computer I have right now is a Core 2 Duo Macbook but I don't want to have to upgrade to Lion just for a friggin' printer. I'm going back to school this summer and will probably be buying a new laptop and/or desktop soon enough but I was looking for some advice. I don't want to have too much hassle just to print. What should I do?

I've tried downloading the installer for the Officejet 6830 which seems very close to the 6530. It did list snow leopard as being compatible but the installer wont run on my computer because it says it's incompatible.

RIP Errol Brown, "You Sexy Thing"

Errol Brown, 71, Dies; Wrote and Sang Disco Hit ‘You Sexy Thing’

Errol Brown, the lead singer for the British band Hot Chocolate and the writer of the band’s indelible disco hit “You Sexy Thing,” which returned to the pop charts when it was featured in the comedy “The Full Monty,” died on Wednesday at his home in the Bahamas. He was 71.

Mr. Brown’s manager, Phil Dale, who confirmed the death, said Mr. Brown had liver cancer.

Mr. Brown was a mustached, shaven-headed heartthrob whose hip-swinging performances accentuated the sex appeal of Hot Chocolate’s songs. The band had some two dozen Top 40 hits in England, including “Emma” and “Every 1’s a Winner,” both of which reached the Billboard Top 10 in the United States.

“You Sexy Thing,” a buoyant come-on inspired by the woman who became Mr. Brown’s wife, was released in 1975

ClamXav and infected files

Just ran a scan of my Home Folder and ClamXav found 144 infected files (Window's Trojans), in a folder of 300+ .emix files in a Messages folder in my Trash.box. Quick view shows the infected files to be of asian origin. When I double-click to open it in Mail app reader, there is no text and deleting it in Mail does nothing in the actual folder. I suppose there a chance of corrupting the Mail database if I manually delete them?

New "enhanced" mobile view sucks

Today when I went to ehmac.ca on my iMac, the page looked very different. There was no way for me to just look at "New Posts", there was not even a forum - just a splash page with a huge EhMac banner. It was very unintuitive.

I actually thought I had some kind of a problem with my browser. There was not even any indication or message saying "Hey, we have changed our layout, do you like it" or something like that. At least that should have been there.

It also didn't even give me any indication that I was signed in, and did not offer a sign-in page or frame or boxes.

I also had great difficulty in getting back to the normal old layout.

Plus one question - why does it go to (or ask if I want to go to) the new Mobile layout when I am on a desktop computer? Isn't the "mobile" layout for "mobile" devices?

Cheers

Pictures that are not Photos

So, one of those little things that sort of bugs me. I often take pictures of things, with my iPhone, that aren't "Photos". For example, I was shopping for a new hose reel for the garden and took pictures of a couple of products so I could compare specific products and prices. Same for a little table for a specific spot. Also needed my Mom's licence plate number to do the sticker renewal...so I took a picture of it.

Part of the reason I don't use iCloud photos is that I don't want all these 'reference images' being uploaded for no good reason.

Any suggestions? Maybe another picture-taking app that _doesn't_ use the Photo Roll? Some kind of extension that let's you isolate certain pictures to a special album or somesuch?

Mail disappeared in apple mail

This just happened on my 5k iMac running latest update of 10.10. I had a glitch with mail... again. I remember reading someone suggesting the "rebuild" option. I clicked that and all my emails disappeared. I restarted my iMac and everything still is gone. How do I fix this?! I do have a time machine backup, can I replace them all with that?

SO ANGRY RN! iPhone 4s: phantom data usage/data tracker

So, as I've been told, I'm one of the lucky legacy /grandfathered plan users. A long time ago, i was ready to forgo daytime mins for data - so I have a 6G plan. I knew that would suffice for years to come.

well, hold on.

I was starting to get the weird overage bills, or was coming really close - and thought that was absolutely bizarre. I'm either at work or home - both with wifi. So, the only time i'm not on it is in transit. Every end of cycle, +/- a day, i would have these one day excessive downloads - over 3G (which is an important clue). I could not understand how or why. Went over my apps, many have cell access locked etc...

Rogers has no idea as I asked a few months back They just saw the one day spike.

I have a tracker that I keep an eye on to make sure i'm not going crazy as every month, i was starting it with a bunch of data mysteriously used up.

Wake up this morning, and this was my tracker's results.

I could not believe my eyes. 4G vanished/used up, in one day/24hr period.
Worse is that I hadn't checked the app in a few days since I was coming near the end of the cycle, and I was totally clear of hitting my cap, even though i started off the cycle w/ another phantom data download.

I'm here racking my brain - what did I do in the last day or so? yesterday, i did 15 mins of YouTube, and did it again for 30 mins walking home.

Last might, a 23min phone call over FaceTime audio: 18MB as per the app.

Where could 4G be downloaded from WHILST on wifi?? Upsetting too is the fact that I can't look @ history past my cycle - on this one app. So today being the 1st day of my cycle, i can't look @ yesterday's or the last period at all.

Anyhow, i'm thinking of running multiple data trackers to draw some comparisons. BUT more importantly:

does anyone have some data tracker faves? I'd love to look @ something pretty meticulous and detailed. The one i'm using is free - and figured it would do the job. But i'd like some more info.

Would love something that highlighted data sucking apps - or culprits. Again, out of my entire day, it's spent mostly at work or home (all wifi), with 30 mins of transit in-between. So where and how this download could occur is absolutely inexplicable.

But something is up. Again, this happens only once a month, days before/day of start of cycle. ARGH!!!

Thx ahead of time.

H!

Who needs a computer anyway?!

If I just need some occasional use of Word/Excel/PPT (or the Apple versions), why need a desktop computer anymore?

I edit photos sometimes which I can do on my iPad (i'm no pro), I stream music to my audio system via Spotify (don't even touch iTunes anymore) and surf the net.

My Mac Mini has been such a pain in the @** since I've had it in Nov. '14 that I'm ready to sell it, buy the cheapest Microsoft Surface with the aforementioned computing needs (since it has a USB I can plug in my external hard drive with my huge music library if necessary, printer, large screen monitor capability) and play between that and my iPad.

Has anyone ditched their desktop and gone this route? I've had it with the Mini and barely even use it, and when I do, it crashes!

menu bar disappears and can't shut down

Strange. After installing Olympus Viewer and Google Drive, my menu bar on the top has disappeared. The only way to get it back is to open an application such as Chrome or System Prefs.

But when I attempt to Shut Down or Restart, it doesn't do anything.

I've been having ongoing issues with my system freezing and have been doing hard shut downs with the power button. I don't want to continue doing this but it's the only way to shut the damn thing down! Any ideas why my menu bar disappeared and why I can't shut down?

I'm using a Nov 2014 Mac Mini and have been having ongoing software issues, but am beginning to think it's the hard drive too. FRUSTRATING!!!!!XX)

RIP Grace Lee Whitney

Grace Lee Whitney, Yeoman Rand on Original 'Star Trek,' Dies

Grace Lee Whitney, 85, the futuristic-clipboard-bearing Yeoman Janice Rand on the original series of "Star Trek," died this weekend in the town of Coarsegold, California, her family confirmed. No cause of death was reported.

Whitney, a recovering alcoholic, spent the last 35 years of her life helping others with addiction problems, often at women's correctional facilities or the Salvation Army, her family said. They said she was credited with having helped thousands of people successfully complete 12-step addiction programs.

Until just the last few years, Whitney was also a regular at "Star Trek" conventions around the world. She titled her autobiography "The Longest Trek."

Whitney was born Mary Ann Chase in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1930, and was raised by an adoptive family. After several years as a dancer with big bands, she was cast as Janice Rand, a Star Fleet yeoman who was personal assistant to William Shatner's Capt. James T. Kirk, in the first season of the original 1966-to-1969 run of "Star Trek."

Duet App -vs- AirDisplay 3: iPad as 2nd screen

Anyone have any experience with either of the 2 apps. I'm likely going to grab one.

Duet App.

Air Display 3.

After grabbing this older MacBook, going from 1920px to 1280px has been a bit of a shocker. Seeing that I have an iPad, would be a great complement as a 2nd screen.

They're pretty much priced the same with the only real diff that AD3 has been around a little longer.

interesting side note:

I love that Duet was developed but an former Apple staffer - and they're apparently so adamant on letting you know - they threw it in the title!

And, added to that, if you take a good look at their site, and has an unusually familiar aesthetic, layout and design... take a close look.

The Nepal Earthquake

Sad news for St. Albert's:

Bruce and Kathy Macmillan's family says both dead in Nepal earthquake

The family of a St. Albert, Alta., couple missing since last Saturday in Nepal believes Bruce and Kathy Macmillan died in the devastating earthquake, but authorities have yet to confirm the deaths.

"It is with our deepest regret and sorrow that we now advise you that our sister Kathy Macmillian (Smith) and our brother Bruce Macmillan have both perished in the Napalese earthquake," the family said in a post to the Find Bruce and Kathy Macmillan Facebook page.

* * *

...the Macmillans were last seen hiking near the village of Chyamki in the Langtang Valley, an area buried in the avalanche.

They had made the decision to take the hiking trip at the last minute, having hiked along that path shortly after they were married 35 years ago.

"Kathy and Bruce passed away while travelling the world, their passion from the moment they were married,"

Time Machine = Saviour

Another reason why Time Machine is SAVIOUR.

I took out a PPT from last year and started editing it. Mistakenly, I saved all the present data on this presentation. I should have actually used SAVE AS. But I was late and soon realised the ppt was overwritten by the new data. Entered TM and went couple of days back and easily restored the old ppt to its location.

With TM it was as simple as eating pie.

Any reason as not to use Time Machine??
