Kirk Douglas RIP

I doubt anyone will ever surpass his record and performances. I saw every movie he ever made when I was a kid and I loved his portrayals, no matter the role.

Kirk Douglas, Indomitable Icon of Hollywood's Golden Age, Dies at 103

Quote:

The actor starred in such films as 'Champion,' 'The Bad and the Beautiful,' 'Lust for Life,' 'Gunfight at the O.K. Corral' and 'Spartacus,' to name just a few.
Kirk Douglas, the son of a ragman who channeled a deep, personal anger through a chiseled jaw and steely blue eyes to forge one of the most indelible and indefatigable careers in Hollywood history, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 103.

“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” son Michael Douglas wrote on his Instagram account. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the Golden Age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”

Douglas walked away from a helicopter crash in 1991 and suffered a severe stroke in 1996 but, ever the battler, he refused to give in. With a passionate will to survive, he was the last man standing of all the great stars of another time.

MBP 2019 question, and value of 2017 MBP

So the latest MBP 16" has the new keyboard hardware under the buttons. Does anyone know if the 13" ones do too?

I'm due for an upgrade, and I would want the newest tech in it.

On a different but related note, my current is a 2017 MBP 13" (retina, Intel Iris 650 graphics), i7 3.5GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD (flash?) - basically fully loaded with the touch bar. Any ideas on what I should sell it for? I'd give the computer a 9/10 in terms of condition.

More about Kobe Bryant

For some reason I thought we had a thread going about Kobe's death, but I am not finding it.

Anyways a good video, about possible causes of the crash from someone who knows what he is talking about.

Getting back to the Mac

Well, after a few years hiatus, I'm planning getting another mac. Last one I sold was, I believe a 2011 mac mini i5, 16gb, 128gb SSD+500gb HDD or it was a 2011 MBP i5, 16gb, 180gb SSD I don't remember. Got rid of them because they were still valuable and was becoming too slow for me.

Now looking at a late 2013 21.5 2.9ghz iMac. I've been looking around for another mac because mainly no one wants me to use their old mac to recover my aperture library. A hackintosh nor a VM does the trick to allow me to export my pictures.

I need you guys advice see if the late 2013 is worth it at 600$?

iMac problem - looking for guidance/ideas

My (93 year-old) Dad's iMac has suddenly stopped going out to the internet. I suspect that some System file has been corrupted.

It is a 2012 iMac, 2TB internal, 4GB RAM, running El Capitan (10.11.6) - I believe that's the last OS that will run on this hardware.

The network setting in the System Prefs shows that ethernet (wired) and WiFi are working fine. I tried FaceTime from my phone and it rang on the computer - which tells me that the basic connectivity appears OK.

However, apps that need the internet, just don't work. Browsers, SpeedTest, FaceTime calls out, Skype, WhatsApp - all don't work.

I tried switching users but got the same result - apps that need to go out to the internet just don't work.

I tried using my (USB stick with) El Capitan installer (to reinstall the OS) but I think the certificate has expired so the error message said to re-download the installer. I went to my computer to do that but the .dmg file gives an error ("Invalid checksum").

I went to OSXDaily (found via search) and followed the link to re-download the installer only to end up with an error (apparently from Apple) that the download is not available in Canada.

So I'm stuck and wondering if anyone has some ideas/suggestions on how I can get my Dad back online. At his age, he really looks forward to checking his email and WhatsApping family around the world - so there is some urgency to my request.

Grateful for any help ... thank you very much.

Going nuts with Time Capsule replacement options

Have you ever been in one of those situations where everybody has an opinion and no solution seems to fit? ...

My TC has been unreliable for ages (needs an unplug/reboot every couple of days) and nothing Apple does seems to fix this so I'm going to bite the bullet and change devices.

I first looked at NAS enclosures to plug into my Netgear PoE switch but couldn't find anything compact/reliable with good Mac/Time Machine reviews.

I then looked at USB to Ethernet converters but these look very much like hit & miss with none getting rock solid reviews.

So what should a man do? I want t a plug-in and forget HD solution for my Time Machine backups. I'm prepared to recycle the TC's HD or open a couple of external (powered) drives.

I need something that has been tested in a Time Machine setup.

Any suggestions? - Thanks

Transfer photos from iCloud to SD card or DVD

I take an SD card from my camera and transfer photos (taken with my camera) to a friends iPad through an adaptor, I get a prompt on the photo app on my friend iPad to choose if i want to import all or selected photos, works fine, no problem.

On my iMac, I insert an SD card, transfer my photos (stored on my iCloud) on that card an then insert my SD card on my adaptor witch I then insert in my friends iPad and I get no prompt to transfer the photos....doesn't seem to read the SD card!

My SD cards format : MS-DOT (Fat 32), iMac OS Catalina 10.15.2, iPad IOS 13.3

How can I transfer photos/videos from my Photos stored on my iCloud to an SD card readable on another tablet or a DVD?

Also, I want to lighten my iCloud by transfering photos and videos away from the Cloud towards a DVD...?

Thanks
