Playing Movies on iPad with USB or SD Card

Has anyone ever tried or know of a way to view movies on an iPad with an external USB Stick or an SD Card? I have searched online and have found a couple of articles, but I just wanted to know if there is another way that might be easier (without jailbreaking).

We're heading down south over march break and I would like, for my sanity, to be able to increase the capacity of the kids iPads via SD or USB. I do have the SD Lightening Card reader.
