Various system folders empty on CCC back up

Ran a back up using CCC a few days ago.

Now it seems the hard drive of that Mac I made back ups from crashed.

When I tried to use the back up it won't boot.

Opening the back up on another Mac shows many of the folders empty, ie when one double clicks on them or clicks the little arrow to the left of the folder, there is nothing.

However, none of these folders are really empty since the back up external shows 216GB available on a 500GB drive and the back up is the only thing on that drive.

"Empty" folders include

System folder which only has the Library folder in it and that library folder is "empty"

Users folder shows the actual user folder, a shared folder and a test folder, but each one of the last three is "empty"

Application folder is empty

There is a PortDetect.log file which the Mac tells me is corrupt when I tried copying files and folders to another drive.

Since that external drive shows almost 300GB of data on it, I assume the data is there, just not linked the way it needs to be.

Any way to recover from this - especially the user data?

I tried disk warrior to rebuild the directory, but it does nothing - when one clicks on rebuild nothing happens.

Also tried Data Rescue II which seems to do something but to run that seems to take days

Any suggestions where to go from here?
