I've been mucking around the office testing out the new 4k support under 10.10.3, and just for fun, I tried plugging my Dell UP2414Q into my wife's Late-2011 MBP.
It turns out that if it's set to Single Stream (SST) mode by forcing it to DisplayPort 1.1, it works with the 2011 MBP. It's limited to 30Hz, but that's better than nothing and could be useful for folk wanting to show video content on a 4k TV. Apple does not officially claim support for any 4k displays on this model.
The Dell monitor supports 60 Hz in MST mode, but not on the 2011 MBP.
I tried my other 4k monitor normally connected to the Windows machine, a Samsung U28D590, which is slightly newer (although significantly lower quality than the Dell and half the price) and supports 60 Hz SST mode. That one did not work at all.
So it seems that a 4k monitor that can be forced to 30Hz (or only supports 30 Hz, such as the Dell P2815Q) will work on a late-2011 MBP.
On the late-2013 rMBP, they both work, simultaneously, at 60Hz. That 21.77 million pixels of glory, including the rMBPs display. Not that there is much point to that, but it's still a fun exercise :)
