The message that comes through most clearly in writer/director Paul Gross’s modern war film is that Afghanistan is a messy, muddled place, one where the explosive simplicity of a bullet in the “right” person doesn’t do much of anything to clarify matters.

* * *

Gross’ combat scenes are the appropriate kind of chaotic, explosive rushes that tend to feature the soldiers trying to figure what’s going on as much as actually fighting. Gross decidedly grounds his metaphor in action: even in these scenes, knowing where and when to shoot is more important than the shot itself. Gross doesn’t always demonstrate that with his camera, but he does grasp its importance in a war.
