The message that comes through most clearly in writer/director Paul Grosss modern war film is that Afghanistan is a messy, muddled place, one where the explosive simplicity of a bullet in the right person doesnt do much of anything to clarify matters.

Gross combat scenes are the appropriate kind of chaotic, explosive rushes that tend to feature the soldiers trying to figure whats going on as much as actually fighting. Gross decidedly grounds his metaphor in action: even in these scenes, knowing where and when to shoot is more important than the shot itself. Gross doesnt always demonstrate that with his camera, but he does grasp its importance in a war.
