I was a bit surprised to suddenly find most of my desktop icons, especially Safari's, were blank generic icons. Using Mavericks 10.9.5.
A restart didn't work and a Google search suggested all kinds of "fixes" from using utilities, deleting certain files or folders, and all kinds of Terminal suggestions. I wasn't too impressed or saw many, if any, "it worked" comments so I thought I'd try my own simpler method.
I shutdown and rebooted, and ran Disk Utility to Repair and Verify (while I was there) my drive, then shutdown and rebooted again and all the icons were displaying as they should.
Anyway, just a suggestion in case it happens to work for and help someone else, and it may just work again for them. Nice and simple. ;)
