I followed the instructions here to use the terminal command to create a bootable installer. When I opened Startup Disk in System Preferences, the OS 10.11 installer did not appear. Yet on restarting my MBP and holding down the option key, I could select the OS 10.11 installer and indeed the machine booted up on the installer. At this point I quitted the installer and restarted on OS 10.9.5 on the internal drive.
I then checked the bootable OS 10.9 installer that I made. Its icon appeared in Startup Disk. Not so with the bootable OS 10.11 installer. Wonder why? But I think the OS 10.11 bootable installer works fine.
